Abstract

The present invention provides a method and system suitable for managing the power consumption of a mobile communication device by way of a user-selectable profile. In response to receiving a power management-initiating signal the mobile communication device performs at least one of the following: Receipt of incoming communication is deferred while other functionality of the mobile communication device is retained; outgoing communication is grouped into a single transmission; and a subsequent transmission is deferred if the transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold.

Claims

1. A method for managing the power consumption of a mobile communication device, comprising the steps of:

receiving a power management-initiating signal; and

performing, in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal, at least one of

deferring receipt of an incoming communication while retaining functionality of the mobile communication device not otherwise disabled;

grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission; and

deferring a subsequent transmission if the transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile communication device in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile communication device comprises adaptively adjusting the duration a backlight is on depending on a usage scenario of the mobile communication device.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated by a user of the mobile communication device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated in response to the power level of the device being lower than a predetermined threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises the step of using selective call acceptance (SCA) protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises the step of using call forwarding protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication is performed by the mobile device.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of grouping outgoing communication into a single transmission comprises the steps of:

assigning a priority of either HIGH or LOW to every generated outgoing communication;

if the priority of an outgoing communication is HIGH, sending the communication out; and

if the priority of the outgoing communication is LOW, holding the LOW priority communication until at least one subsequent communication of HIGH or LOW priority is generated and then sending out the outgoing communication with the subsequent communication in a single transmission.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of deferring a subsequent transmission comprises the following steps:

determining signal power for the mobile communication device;

if the signal power is above a predetermined level then proceeding to set up a call; and

if the signal power is not above a predetermined level, then inhibiting call setup.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile device comprises both analog and digital modes of communication, wherein the step of deferring a subsequent transmission comprises deactivating the analog capability of the mobile device.

12. A method for managing the power consumption of a mobile communication device, comprising the steps of:

receiving a power-management-initiating signal; and

deferring receipt of incoming communication while retaining functionality of the mobile communication device not otherwise disabled in response to the step of receiving the power-management-initiating signal.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of deferring a subsequent transmission if the transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

15. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile communication device in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated by a user of the mobile communication device.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated in response to the power level of the device being lower than a predetermined threshold.

18. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises using selective call acceptance (SCA) protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

19. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises using call forwarding protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

20. The method of claim 12 wherein said step of deferring receipt of incoming communication is performed by the mobile communication device.

21. A method for managing the power consumption of a mobile communication device, said method comprising the steps of:

receiving a power-management-initiating signal; and

grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of deferring receipt of an incoming communication in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

23. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of reducing the power consumption of the mobile communication devices by disabling high power outgoing communications in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

24. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile device in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated by a user of the mobile communication device.

26. The method of claim 21 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated in response to the power level of the device being lower than a predetermined threshold.

27. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission comprises the steps of:

assigning a priority of either HIGH or LOW to every generated outgoing communication;

if the priority of an outgoing communication is HIGH, sending the communication out; and

if the priority of the outgoing communication is LOW, holding the LOW priority communication until at least one subsequent communication of HIGH or LOW priority is generated and then sending out the outgoing communication with the subsequent communication in a single transmission.

28. A method suitable for managing the power consumption of a mobile communication device, said method comprising the steps of:

receiving a power-management-initiating signal; and

deferring a subsequent transmission if said transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

29. The method of claim 28 further comprising the step of deferring receipt of incoming communication in response to the step of receiving the power-management-initiating signal.

30. The method of claim 28 further comprising the step of grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

31. The method of claim 28 further comprising the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile device in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

32. The method of claim 28 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated by a user of the mobile communication device.

33. The method of claim 28 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated in response to the power level of the device being lower than a predetermined threshold.

34. A mobile communication device comprising a processor programmed with computer executable instructions that perform the steps of:

receiving a power management-initiating signal; and

performing, in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal, at least one of

deferring receipt of an incoming communication while retaining functionality of the mobile communication device not otherwise disabled;

grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission; and

deferring a subsequent transmission if said transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold.

35. The device of claim 34 further comprising the step of disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile communication device in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal.

36. The device of claim 34 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated by a user of the mobile communication device.

37. The device of claim 34 wherein the power management-initiating signal is generated in response to the power level of the device being lower than a predetermined threshold.

38. The device of claim 34 wherein deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises using selective call acceptance (SCA) protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

39. The device of claim 34 wherein deferring receipt of incoming communication comprises using call forwarding protocols on a network in communication with the mobile communication device.

40. The device of claim 34 wherein deferring receipt of incoming communication is performed by the mobile communication device.

41. The device of claim 34 wherein grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission comprises the steps of:

assigning a priority of either HIGH or LOW to every generated outgoing communication;

if the priority of a generated communication is HIGH, sending the generated communication out; and

if the priority of the generated communication is LOW, holding the LOW priority communication until at least one subsequent communication of HIGH or LOW priority is generated and then sending out the generated communication with said subsequent communication in a single transmission.

42. The device of claim 34 wherein deferring a subsequent transmission comprises the following steps:

determining signal power for the mobile communication device;

if the signal power is above a predetermined level then proceeding to set up a call; and

if the signal power is not above a predetermined level, then inhibiting call set up.

43. The device of claim 34 wherein the mobile device comprises both analog and digital modes of communication, wherein the step of deferring a subsequent transmission comprises deactivating the analog capability of the mobile device.

44. A mobile communication device comprising a processor programmed with computer executable instructions that perform the steps of:

receiving a power management-initiating signal in response to a decrease in the power level of the mobile communication device; and

performing, in response to the step of receiving the power management-initiating signal, the steps of;

deferring receipt of an incoming communication while retaining functionality of the mobile communication device not otherwise disabled;

grouping a plurality of outgoing communications into a single transmission; and

deferring a subsequent transmission if said transmission requires power exceeding a predetermined threshold; and

disabling at least part of a backlight of the mobile communication device wherein the duration the backlight is on depends on a usage scenario of the device.
