Abstract

Disclosed is an active anchor for an adjustable occlusion device for use in a body lumen such as the left atrial appendage. A positive force expander for an adjustable occlusion device is also disclosed. Methods of deploying such devices are also disclosed.

Claims

1. An anchor for an implant comprising:

a tissue engaging member having a proximal end and a distal end;

an occlusion device, wherein the tissue engaging member is at least partially disposed within the occlusion device;

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member is sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue;

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member is extendable beyond the distal end of the implant; and

a control having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the distal end of the control is releasably connected to the tissue engaging member; and

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member is extendable beyond the distal end of the implant by manipulation of the control.

2. An anchor as in claim 1, wherein the tissue engaging member is a helical coil.

3. An anchor as in claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the tissue engaging member is a hollow tube;

and

the distal end of the control is insertable within the proximal end of the tissue engaging member, such that the control can freely move longitudinally within the tissue engaging member and can apply rotational torque to the tissue engaging member.

4. An anchor as in claim 1, wherein the tissue engaging member is a biased wire having a curve between about 90 and about 270 degrees.

5. An anchor as in claim 4, wherein the tissue engaging member is a biased wire having a curve of about 180 degrees.

6. A method of anchoring an implant, comprising the steps of:

deploying an implant having a distal end;

extending a tissue engaging member beyond the distal end of the implant; and

engaging tissue with the tissue engaging member.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the implant is deployed while the tissue engaging member is at least partially disposed axially within the occlusion device.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the tissue engaging member is threadably engaged with the implant.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the tissue engaging member is extended by applying a rotational torque to the proximal end of the tissue engaging member.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the tissue engaging member is extended by applying a longitudinal force substantially parallel to the axis of the implant.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein the tissue engaging member is extended by releasing a restraint on the bias of the tissue engaging member.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein the implant is a left atrial appendage occlusion device.

13. An active expander for an implant, comprising:

a first coil that is fixedly attached to a first end of the implant;

a second coil that is rotatably attached to a second end of the implant;

wherein the first and second coils are rotatably engageable with each other; and

wherein the implant is axially compressible and radially expandable in response to rotational engagement of the first and second coils.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the first coil is fixedly attached to the proximal end of the implant.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the first coil is fixedly attached to the distal end of the implant.

16. The device of claim 13, wherein the implant is an occlusion device.

17. The device of claim 13, wherein the implant is a device for occluding the left atrial appendage.

18. The device of claim 13, wherein the second coil is engageable by a controller that moves freely longitudinally within the second coil and can apply a rotational torque to the second coil.

19. A method of actively expanding an implant comprising the steps of:

rotating a coil;

engaging an engagement surface with the first coil; and

axially moving the engagement surface with respect to the coil in response to the rotating step to axially compress and radially expand the implant.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the implant is radially expanded in the left atrial appendage.

21. An implantable device, comprising;

means for actively radially expanding the device during deployment; and

means for actively anchoring the device after deployment.

22. An implantable device, comprising;

a first coil that is fixedly attached to one axial end of the implant;

a second coil that is rotatably attached to the other axial end of the implant;

wherein the first and second coils are rotatably engageable; and

wherein rotatably engaging the first and second coils axially compresses and radially expands the implant, and

a tissue engaging member having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the tissue engaging member is at least partially disposed axially within the occlusion device; and

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member is sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue; and

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member is extendable beyond the distal end of the implant; and

a controller having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the distal end of the controller is releasably connected to the proximal end of the tissue engaging member; and

wherein the distal end of the tissue engaging member can be extended beyond the distal end of the implant by manipulation of the proximal end of the controller.

23. An occlusion device deployment system comprising:

a deployment catheter having a lumen;

an occlusion device, having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a deployment line releasably connected to the occlusion device and located within the lumen of the deployment catheter,

wherein proximal retraction of the deployment line expands the occlusion device.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the deployment line is releasably connected to the distal end of the occlusion device.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the deployment line comprises a loop configured to engage the occlusion device.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the loop is formed by a slip knot or an aperture.

27. The system of claim 23, wherein the occlusion device comprises supports for retaining the occlusion device in an expanded state.

28. The system of claim 25, wherein the loop is secured to the occlusion device such that the deployment line is immovable and the occlusion device is retained in an expanded state.

29. The system of claim 23, wherein the deployment line is secured to the occlusion device, such that the occlusion device is retained in an expanded state, by knots, clips or adhesives.

30. A method of expanding an occlusion device comprising:

deploying an implant having a distal end; and

proximally retracting a deployment line engaged with the distal end of the implant.

31. A method of expanding an occlusion device comprising:

deploying an implant having a distal end;

proximally retracting a deployment line engaged with the distal end of the implant; and

securing the deployment line such that the implant is retained in an expanded state.
