1. A method for selecting one of a number of selectable channels on an interactive multi-channel graphic display in response to an input device, the method comprising the steps of:
- displaying a number of visually indistinguishable elements in an array on the display, each element corresponding to a selectable channel;
detecting a signal from the input device responsive to a user input;
selecting one of the indistinguishable elements in response to the signal from the input device;
displaying a state change associated with the one element such that it is visually distinguishable from the other elements;
displaying text and/or graphical information corresponding to the one element proximate to the one element;
detecting another signal from the input device in response to a user input;
selecting a second visually indistinguishable element in response to the user input;
displaying a state change of the second element such that it is visually distinguishable from the other elements and removing the display of the state change associated with the one element;
displaying text and/or graphical information regarding the second element proximate to the second element and removing the display of the text information associated with the one element;
detecting a third signal from the input device in response to a user input; and
displaying the channel corresponding to the second element on the graphic display in response to the third signal.

Abstract
A user interface for multimedia centers advantageously utilizes hand-held inertial-sensing user input devices to select channels and quickly navigate the dense menus of options. Extensive use of the high resolution and bandwidth of such user input devices is combined with strategies to avoid unintentional inputs and with dense and intuitive interactive graphical displays.

21. An graphic user interface utilizing a free-space hand-held input device for distinguishing desired from undesired user inputs, wherein the input device is responsive to pitch and yaw rotations and the interface is characterized by movement of a state change on the display, the improvement comprising:
- thresholds for each of the responses, inputs below such thresholds being ignored, the improvement comprising;
decreasing the threshold value of one of the thresholds relative to another in response to the user interaction being associated with a first area on the graphic display and reducing the threshold value in response to the user interaction being associated with another area on the graphic display. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24)

25. A graphic user interface utilizing a free-space hand-held input device for distinguishing desired from undesired user inputs, wherein the input device is responsive to pitch and yaw rotations, and the user interaction is associated with a position on the display which maps changes in pitch to changes along the y-axis of the display and changes in yaw to changes along the x-axis of the display and the interface is further characterized by minimum thresholds for inputs in different directions, inputs below such thresholds being ignored, the improvement comprising:
increasing the threshold value of one of the thresholds in certain directions in response to the user interaction being associated with a first area on the graphic display and reducing the threshold value in response to the user interaction being associated with another area on the graphic display. - View Dependent Claims (26, 27, 28)
