Abstract

A sensor including a sensing layer is disposed over an electrode or an optode and a layer-by-layer assembled mass transport limiting membrane disposed over the sensing layer. The membrane includes at least one layer of a polyanionic or polycationic material. The assembled layers of the membrane are typically disposed in an alternating manner. The sensor also optionally includes a biocompatible membrane.

Claims

1. A sensor, comprising:

a sensing layer disposed on a substrate;

a multilayer flux-limiting membrane disposed on the sensing layer, the membrane comprising a sextet layer comprising six alternating polycationic and polyanionic layers, each layer disposed on and bound to the immediately preceding layer of the membrane.

2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensing layer comprises an osmium redox polymer.

3. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensing layer comprises a non-leachable redox polymer.

4. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensing layer comprises an enzyme.

5. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the flux-limiting membrane is disposed on and bound to the sensing layer.

6. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the polyanionic layers and the polycationic layers comprises pyridine.

7. The sensor of claim 1, further comprising a biocompatible layer disposed over the multilayer membrane.

8. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the multilayer flux-limiting membrane comprises a second sextet layer.

9. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises an electrode upon which the sensing layer is disposed.

10. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises an optode upon which the sensing layer is disposed.

11. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the sensor has an active area of 0.1 cm² or less.

12. The sensor of claim 11, wherein the active area is 10⁻

2 cm² to 10<sup>−

8</sup> cm².

13. A sensor, comprising:

an osmium sensing layer disposed on a substrate;

a multilayer flux-limiting membrane disposed on the sensing layer, the membrane comprising a first polyanionic layer and a first polycationic layer, the first polyanionic layer disposed on the sensing layer, at least one of the first polyanionic layer and a first polycationic layer comprising pyridine; and

a biocompatible layer disposed over the multilayer membrane.

14. The sensor of claim 13, wherein each of the first polyanionic layer and a first polycationic layer comprises pyridine.

15. The sensor of claim 13, wherein the multilayer flux-limiting member further comprises a second polyanionic layer disposed on the first polycationic layer, and the biocompatible layer being disposed on the second polyanionic layer.

16. The sensor of claim 13, wherein the multilayer flux-limiting member further comprises a second polyanionic layer and a second polycationic layer, a second polyanionic layer disposed on the first polycationic layer, and the biocompatible layer being disposed on the second polycationic layer.

17. A sensor, comprising:

an osmium sensing layer disposed on a substrate;

a multilayer flux-limiting membrane disposed on the sensing layer, the membrane comprising a first polycationic layer and a first polyanionic layer, the first polycationic layer disposed on the sensing layer, at least one of the first polycationic layer and a first polyanionic layer comprising pyridine; and

a biocompatible layer disposed over the multilayer membrane.

18. The sensor of claim 17, wherein each of the first polyanionic layer and a first polycationic layer comprises pyridine.

19. The sensor of claim 17, wherein the multilayer flux-limiting member further comprises a second polycationic layer disposed on the first polyanionic layer, and the biocompatible layer being disposed on the second polycationic layer.

20. The sensor of claim 17, wherein the multilayer flux-limiting member further comprises a second polycationic layer and a second polyanionic layer, a second polycationic layer disposed on the first polyanionic layer, and the biocompatible layer being disposed on the second polyanionic layer.
