Abstract

The performance of multimedia works is controlled based on indicated preferences of a user.

Claims

1. A method comprising

enabling a user of a first electronic device to control performance of multimedia works by the first electronic device,

acquiring data at the first electronic device from which preferences of the user for multimedia works can be inferred, and

at another electronic device, generating preference information based on the acquired data, the preferences including negative preferences.

2. The method of claim 1 in which the preferences include only negative preferences.

3. The method of claim 1 in which the data is acquired based on the user'"'"'s control of the performance of the works.

4. The method of claim 1 also including:

enabling the user to control performance of multimedia works at one or more other electronic devices,

acquiring data at the one or more other electronic devices, from which preferences of the user for multimedia works can be inferred, the preferences including negative preferences, and

generating preference information based on the acquired data from the first electronic device and from the one or more other electronic devices, the generated preference information being associated with the user.

5. The method of claim 1 in which the first electronic device comprises a portable device.

6. The method of claim 1 or 4 also including specifying a sequence of performance of multimedia works for the user based on the preference information.

7. The method of claim 1 also including selecting multimedia works for delivery to the first electronic device based on the preference information.

8. The method of claim 4 also including selecting multimedia works for delivery to at least one of the devices based on the preference information.

9. The method of claim 1 also including storing the multimedia works in the first electronic device.

10. The method of claim 4 also including storing the multimedia works in at least one of the electronic devices.

11. The method of claim 1 or 4 also including storing a changing body of multimedia works on the first electronic device, the body of multimedia works being determined based on the preference information.

12. The method of claim 1 in which the data acquired at the first electronic device comprises data from which it can be inferred if a user did not permit the performance of a work to be completed.

13. The method of claim 4 in which the data acquired at one or more of the other electronic devices comprises data from which it can be inferred if a user did not permit the performance of a work to be completed.

14. The method of claim 12 in which the data acquired at the first electronic device comprises the time when the performance of the work was last completed.

15. The method of claim 13 in which the data acquired at one or more of the other electronic devices comprises the time when the performance of the work was last completed.

16. The method of claim 1 or 4 in which the user is inferred to disfavor the work if the performance of the work was not permitted to be completed.

17. The method of claim 1 in which the multimedia works stored on the first electronic device comprise a subset of a larger library of multimedia works available to the user.

18. The method of claim 1 in which the acquired data is provided from the first electronic device to the other electronic device using an electronic communication channel or a portable storage device.

19. The method of claim 4 in which the preferences comprise only negative preferences.

20. The method of claim 1 or 4 in which the user is identified and the preference information is associated with the user.

21. The method of claim 1 also comprising receiving at an online retailing site preference information derived from a user during the performance of works at the first electronic device, and

selecting works to suggest to the user for purchase based on the preference information.

22. The method of claim 4 in which at least one of the one or more other electronic devices comprises a portable electronic device.

23. The method of claim 5or 22 in which the portable electronic device comprises a compressed music player.

39. The method of claim 1 or 2 also including enabling the user to indicate a preference for a subsequently performed multimedia work to be like the first work.

41. The method of claim 1 or 2 also including enabling the user to indicate a preference for a subsequently performed multimedia work to be like the first work.

66. The method of claim 4 also comprising receiving at an online retailing site preference information derived from a user during the performance of works at the one or more other electronic device, and

selecting works to suggest to the user for purchase based on the preference information.

24. A method comprising

maintaining on library electronic devices respective stored libraries of multimedia works,

storing on a portable electronic device a body of preference information indicative of the preferences of a user for multimedia works, and

enabling the user to cause the preference information stored on the portable electronic device to control the performance of multimedia works from any of the library electronic devices.

25. A method comprising

storing a library of multimedia works on a storage device,

selecting a portion of the multimedia works from the library probabilistically based on user preference information for performance to a user at a location associated with the storage device, and

assessing a fee for performances of the selected multimedia works on a performance device.

26. The method of claim 25 in which the selecting of a portion of the multimedia works is based on preferences indicated by the user in connection with the performance of multimedia works.

27. The method of claim 25 in which the fee is based on a number of works performed.

28. The method of claim 25 in which the fee comprises a one-time charge for all performances of works in the library.

29. The method of claim 25 in which the fee comprises a charge per use.

30. The method of claim 25 in which the works are locked against access and the fee is assessed in connection with unlocking access.

31. The method of claim 25 in which the library is automatically updated on the storage device.

32. The method of claim 31 in which the updating includes adding and/or removing works in the library.

33. The method of claim 25 also including paying royalties to rights holders of the works, based on information about the selected multimedia works.

34. The method of claim 25 in which the location comprises a location associated with personal travel.

35. The method of claim 34 in which the location comprises one of an automobile, an aircraft, or a hotel.

67. The method of claim 25 also comprising receiving at an online retailing site the user preference information, selecting works to suggest to the user for purchase based on the preference information, downloading a work selected by the user in response to the suggestions, and assessing a fee for performance of the downloaded work.

36. A method comprising

preloading a library of multimedia works on a storage device of a vehicle,

the multimedia works in the library being inaccessible except upon unlocking, and

selectively unlocking portions of the library based on preference information indicative of preferences of a user of the vehicle for multimedia works.

37. The method of claim 36 in which at least some of the preference information is provided by the user during use of the vehicle.

38. A method comprising

performing a first multimedia work for a user, and

enabling the user to indicate a preference for a subsequently performed multimedia work to be like the first work.

40. A method comprising

performing a first multimedia work for a user, and

enabling the user to indicate a preference for a subsequently performed multimedia work to be unlike the first work.

42. A method comprising

managing a body of preference information indicative of preferences of a user for multimedia works that are part of a first library of multimedia works, and

applying the preference information to generate performance sequences for a second library of multimedia works distinct from the first library.

43. The method of claim 42 in which the first and second libraries share at least some common works.

44. The method of claim 42 in which the first library of multimedia works and the second library of multimedia works are available at different locations.

45. The method of claim 42 in which the preference information is stored on a portable medium and carried from one location to another for use with different libraries of multimedia works.

46. The method of claim 42 in which the preference information is stored on a network.

47. A method comprising

managing a first body of preference data or preference information indicative of preferences of a first user for multimedia works,

managing a second body of preference data or preference information indicative of preferences of a second user for multimedia works, and

deriving a third body of preference data or preference information from the first body and the second body.

48. The method of claim 47 in which the third body of preference information is used to generate performance sequences for additional users.

49. The method of claim 48 in which the deriving comprises aggregating the first and second bodies of data or information and processing the aggregate to derive the third body of data or information.

50. The method of claim 49 in which the first user and the second user comprise the same user.

51. A method comprising

storing on a device a set of multimedia works that comprises a sub library of a larger library of available multimedia works,

performing at least some of the multimedia works at the device,

receiving data indicative of preferences of a user with respect to the performed multimedia works, and

updating the multimedia works included in the stored set based on the preferences of the user.

52. The method of claim 51 in which the device comprises a handheld device or a vehicle mounted device.

53. The method of claim 51 including repeatedly receiving information indicative of preferences of a user and repeatedly updating the multimedia works based on the preferences.

54. A method comprising

maintaining information indicative of preferences of a user with respect to performed multimedia works,

based on the information and on available multimedia works, probabilistically generating a set of multimedia works, and

distributing the set of multimedia works to a portable device.

55. The method of claim 54 in which the set of multimedia works are distributed in a compressed format.

56. The method of claim 54 in which the compressed format comprises MP3.

57. The method of claim 54 in which the distributing is done by recording to a disk.

58. The method of claim 54 in which the distributing includes downloading the multimedia works to the portable device.

59. The method of claim 54 in which the downloading is done in such a manner that the user is unaware that the downloading is occurring.

60. The method of claim 54 in which the portable device comprises a handheld device or a vehicle mounted device.

61. The method of claim 59 in which the downloading is done wirelessly.

62. A method comprising

maintaining a body of preference information indicative of preferences of a user for multimedia works,

at a performance device, receiving preference or work-selection information from the user,

selecting multimedia works for performance based on the preference or work-selection information or on pre-stored preference information about the user'"'"'s preferences for multimedia works,

some of the selected works not being stored on the performance device, and

obtaining the non-stored works from available sources and loading them on the performance device without necessarily indicating to the user that the works are not stored on the performance device.

63. A method comprising

maintaining on a portable device having limited storage, multimedia works to be performed,

from time to time automatically replacing on the portable device works that have a lower probability of being preferred by a user with works that have a higher probability of being preferred.

64. Apparatus comprising

a device including storage to store a set of multimedia works that comprises a subset of a larger library of available multimedia works,

elements configured to perform at least some of the multimedia works at the device,

stored information indicative of preferences of a user with respect to the performed multimedia works, and

a port for receiving updates of the multimedia works included in the stored set based on the preferences of the user.

65. A method comprising

receiving at an online retailing site preference information derived from a user during the performance of works at a local device, and

selecting works to suggest to the user for purchase based on the preference information.

68. A method comprising

storing a library of multimedia works on a storage device,

selecting a portion of the multimedia works from the library for performance to a user

assessing a fee for performances of the selected multimedia works on a performance device, and

preventing access by the user to data that comprises the multimedia works that are stored on the storage device.
