Abstract

A method for the dispersion of projectiles from guns whereby the projectiles are modified by moving the center of mass of the projectile away from it'"'"'s central axis. This in combination with bring fired from a rifled gun barrel will impart velocity to the projectile upon exiting the gun barrel at right angles to the barrel. This velocity along with the higher muzzle velocity will cause the modified projectile to diverge away from the trajectory of a standard projectile. The magnitude of the divergence will vary with the distance the projectile'"'"'s center of mass is away from it'"'"'s central axis, and the placement of the modified projectile strikes around the bull'"'"'s-eye will be determined by the loading orientation of the cartridge in the chamber of the gun. Firing a multiplicity of standard and modified projectiles will produce an accurate dispersion pattern on a target.

Claims

1. A system for projectile dispersion comprising:

a projectile having a main body, having a front end, a back end and a side;

wherein said projectile has a central axis located longitudinally from said back end to said front end of said projectile in the center of said projectile;

wherein said projectile has a center of mass which is located a distance from said central axis of said projectile;

wherein there is a means for imparting spin to said projectile;

wherein there is a means for imparting a forward motion to said projectiles.

2. Device of claim 1 wherein

said means for firing said projectile is a gun.

3. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said means for imparting spin to said projectile is a rifled barrel.

4. Device of claim 3 further comprising:

a weight coupled to an end of said rifled barrel.

5. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said projectile has a means for indicating said orientation of said center of mass of said projectile.

6. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is located a distance from central axis of said projectile due to extraction of a portion of mass from said side of said projectile.

7. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is located a distance from central axis of said projectile due to an absence of mass from said side of said projectile.

8. Device of claim 6 wherein:

said portion of mass extracted from said side of said projectile leaves a recess in said side of said projectile;

wherein said recess is filled with a material with a lesser density than a density of a material of said main body.

9. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said body having a circumference around said body;

said center of mass of said projectile is spaced a distance from central axis of said projectile due to mass removed from said circumference of said projectile.

10. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is located a distance from central axis of said projectile due to mass added to said side of said body.

11. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is located a distance from central axis of said projectile due to mass added to said side of said projectile.

12. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is spaced a distance from central axis of said projectile due to at least one cavity within said surface;

wherein said cavity is substantially parallel to said longitudinal axis extending along a length of said body between said side of projectile and said central axis.

13. Device of claim 1 wherein:

said center of mass of said projectile is located a distance from central axis of said projectile due to mass added to said cavity.

14. device of claim 13 wherein:

said mass added to said cavity has a density greater than a density of a material of said main body.

15. Device of claim 1 further comprising:

a plurality of said projectile;

wherein said plurality of said projectiles each having a center of mass orientation;

wherein there is a means for firing said plurality of projectiles in succession.

16. Device of claim 15 wherein:

said center of mass orientation of each successive projectile is substantially the same.

17. Device of claim 15 wherein:

said center of mass orientation of each successive projectile is substantially the same.

18. Device of claim 15 wherein:

said center of mass orientation of each successive projectile is varied.

19. Device of claim 15 wherein:

said center of mass orientation of each successive projectile is in a pattern so that a dispersion is created.

20. Device of claim 19 further comprising:

at least one standard projectile in said pattern of said projectiles.

21. Device of claim 19 wherein:

said dispersion creates a horizontal strike pattern around a bullseye.

22. Device of claim 19 wherein:

said dispersion creates a vertical strike pattern around a bullseye.

23. Device of claim 19 wherein:

said dispersion creates a ring strike pattern around a bullseye.

24. Device of claim 19 wherein:

said dispersion creates an inner ring strike pattern and at least one outer ring strike pattern around a bullseye.

25. A system for projectile dispersion comprising:

a projectile, having a main body, a front end, a back end and a side;

wherein projectile is divided into at least one detachable portion;

wherein said projectile has a central axis located longitudinally from said back end to said front end of said projectile in the center of said projectile;

wherein each said portion has a central axis located identical to said central axis of said projectile;

wherein each said at least one portion of said projectile has a center of mass which is located a distance from said central axis of said at least one portion;

wherein there is a means for imparting spin to said projectile;

wherein there is a means for firing said projectile;

wherein said portions detach after firing from a means for firing.

26. Device of claim 25 wherein:

said means for imparting spin to said projectile is a rifled barrel.

27. Device of claim 25 wherein

said means for firing said projectile is a gun.

28. A system for projectile dispersion comprising:

a cartridge having a central axis;

a gun powder contained within said cartridge;

a multiplicity of projectiles contained within said cartridge wherein said projectiles each having a center of mass;

wherein a plurality of the multiplicity of projectiles are located a distance from said central axis of said cartridge so that said plurality of projectiles of said multiplicity of projectiles is located a distance from central axis of said cartridge;

a means for imparting spin to said multiplicity of projectiles.

29. A system for projectile dispersion as in claim 28 further comprising:

a sabot contained within said cartridge;

wherein said multiplicity of projectiles is contained within said sabot.

30. A system for projectile dispersion as in claim 28 wherein:

said means for imparting spin is a rifled gun barrel.

31. A method for projectile dispersion comprising:

shifting a center of mass a distance away from a central axis of a projectile;

imparting a forward motion on said projectile;

imparting spin to said projectile.

32. A method as recited in claim 31 wherein:

the step of shifting a center of mass from a central axis of said projectile includes extracting a portion of mass from a side of said projectile.

33. A method as recited in claim 31, wherein:

the step of shifting a center of mass from a central axis of said projectile includes forming a cavity within said projectile so that the cavity is between a surface of said projectile and said central axis of said projectile.

34. A method as recited in claim 31, wherein:

the step shifting a center of mass from central axis of said projectile includes filling said cavity with a material of greater density than a material comprising said projectile.

35. A method as recited in claim 31, wherein:

the step of shifting a center of mass from a central axis of said projectile includes adding mass to a side of said projectile.

36. Method of claim 31 wherein:

the step of imparting spin to said projectile includes passing said projectile through a rifled gun barrel.

37. Method of claim 31 wherein:

the step of imparting forward motion on said projectile includes firing said projectile from a means for firing.

38. Method of claim 31 wherein:

the step of imparting forward motion on said projectile includes firing said projectile from a gun.

39. A method of claim 38 further comprising:

Orienting successive said projectiles so that a dispersion is created upon firing.

40. A method recited in claim 38 wherein:

Orienting successive said projectiles so that a center of mass orientation of each successive said projectile is substantially the same.

41. A method as recited in claim 38 wherein:

Orienting successive said projectiles so that a center of mass orientation of each successive projectile is varied.

42. A method as recited in claim 38 wherein:

Orienting successive center of mass orientations of said projectiles into a pattern.

43. A method as recited in claim 42 further comprising:

Introducing into said pattern a standard projectile with a center of mass along a central axis of said standard projectile.

44. A method recited in claim 43 further comprising:

Orienting successive said projectiles and said standard projectiles such that a horizontal dispersal pattern is created.

45. A method recited in claim 43 further comprising:

Orienting successive said projectiles and said standard projectiles such that a vertical dispersal pattern is created.

46. A method recited in claim 43 further comprising:

Orienting successive said projectiles and said standard projectiles such that a dispersal pattern is created with a ring.

47. A method recited in claim 43 further comprising:

Orienting successive said projectiles and said standard projectiles such that a dispersal pattern is created with an inner ring and at least one outer ring.

48. A method for projectile dispersion comprising:

dividing said projectile into a plurality of detachable portions;

shifting a center of mass of each portion of said projectile a distance away from central axis of each portion and central axis of said projectile;

firing said projectile from a means for firing;

imparting spin to said projectile;

detaching said portions from one another after firing.

49. A method as recited in claim 48, further comprising:

Orienting the center of mass of each portion so that said center of mass of each said portion is oriented 180 degrees from the other.

50. A method as recited in claim 48, further comprising:

Orienting the center of mass of each portion so that said center of mass of each said portion is varied with respect to one another.
