Abstract

A flat panel display includes a flexible substrate; a passive matrix display having an array of pixels formed on a side of the flexible substrate, and row and column electrodes formed on the same side of the flexible substrate and connected to the pixels for providing data and selection signals to the pixel elements; a plurality of electrical contacts formed on the same side of the substrate and electrically connected to the row and column electrodes; and discrete data and selection drivers located on the same side of the flexible substrate around the periphery of the passive matrix display and electrically connected to the electrical contacts for driving the pixels of the passive matrix display.

Claims

1. A flat-panel display, comprising:

a) a flexible substrate;

b) a passive matrix display having an array of pixels formed on a side of the flexible substrate, and row and column electrodes formed on the same side of the flexible substrate and connected to the pixels for providing data and selection signals to the pixel elements;

c) a plurality of electrical contacts formed on the same side of the substrate and electrically connected to the row and column electrodes; and

d) discrete data and selection drivers located on the same side of the flexible substrate around the periphery of the passive matrix display and electrically connected to the electrical contacts for driving the pixels of the passive matrix display.

2. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable data drivers.

3. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable selection drivers.

4. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable data and selection drivers.

5. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the data and/or the selection drivers comprise a plurality of separate discrete drivers.

6. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the data drivers include memory for storing a frame of data.

7. The flat panel display claimed in claim 6, wherein the data drivers drive the display at a rate greater than a frame refresh rate.

8. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, further including a controller for providing address and data values to the data drivers.

9. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the pixels are OLEDs.

10. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the display is a color display.

11. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the data drivers include an analog memory for storing data.

12. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the data drivers include a digital memory for storing data and a digital to analog converter for converting the digital data to analog form.

13. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the discrete data and selection drivers are unpackaged integrated circuit dice.

14. The flat panel display claimed in claim 1, wherein the discrete data and selection drivers are packaged in surface mount packages.

15. A method of making a flat-panel display, comprising:

a) providing a flexible substrate;

b) forming a passive matrix display having an array of pixels on a side of the flexible substrate, and row and column electrodes on the same side of the flexible substrate and connected to the pixels for providing data and selection signals to the pixel elements;

c) forming a plurality of electrical contacts on the same side of the substrate, the electrical contacts being electrically connected to the row and column electrodes; and

d) locating discrete data and selection drivers on the same side of the flexible substrate around the periphery of the passive matrix display and electrically connecting the data and selection drivers to the electrical contacts for driving the pixels of the passive matrix display.

16. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable data drivers.

17. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable selection drivers.

18. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the passive matrix display includes a plurality of separately addressable regions having separately addressable data and selection drivers.

19. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the data and/or the selection drivers comprise a plurality of separate discrete drivers.

20. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the data drivers include memory for storing a frame of data.

21. The method claimed in claim 20, wherein the data drivers drive the display at a rate greater than a frame refresh rate.

22. The method claimed in claim 15, further including a controller for providing address and data values to the data drivers.

23. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the pixels are OLEDs.

24. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the display is a color display.

25. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the data drivers include an analog memory for storing data.

26. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the data drivers include a digital memory for storing data and a digital to analog converter for converting the digital data to analog form.

27. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the discrete data and selection drivers are unpackaged integrated circuit dice.

28. The method claimed in claim 15, wherein the discrete data and selection drivers are packaged in surface mount packages.
