Abstract

A connector for a medical device is disclosed. The connector includes a body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therethrough between the proximal end and the distal end. The passage fluidly connects the proximal end and the distal end. The proximal end includes a connecting portion for releasably connecting the connector to an external device. The distal end is fluidly connected to a conduit. A cylinder is rotatably disposed in the passage between first position and a second position, wherein the cylinder includes an opening extending generally diametrically therethrough.

Claims

1. A connector for a medical device comprising:

a body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therethrough between the proximal end and the distal end, wherein the passage fluidly connects the proximal end and the distal end, wherein the proximal end includes a fitting for releasably connecting the connector to an external device, and wherein the distal end is fluidly connected to a conduit; and

a sealing member disposed within the passage to selectively restrict fluid flow between the proximal end and the distal end.

2. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the fitting for releasably connecting the connector comprises a threaded connector.

3. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the fitting for releasably connecting the connector comprises a slip lock.

4. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the sealing member is a valve.

5. The connector according to claim 4, wherein the valve comprises a cylinder rotatably disposed within the body, and wherein the cylinder includes a passage fluidly communicating the proximal end and the distal end in a first rotated position, and wherein the cylinder restricts fluid communication between the proximal end and the distal end in a second rotated position.

6. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the body further comprises a stop disposed on an exterior thereof and the sealing member comprises a tab engageable with the stop to limit operation of the sealing member.

7. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the sealing member is a cylinder.

8. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the sealing member comprises a cylinder having an opening extending generally diametrically therethough and a first end having a first tab extending therefrom, and wherein body comprises a first stop member disposed a predetermined arcuate distance around the first end of the cylinder, wherein the first stop member has a first open end and a first closed end, and wherein the first tab is movably disposable between the first open end and the first closed end.

The connector according to claim 8, wherein the cylinder further comprises a second end disposed distal from the first end, wherein the second end has a second tab extending therefrom, and wherein the body further comprises a second stop member disposed a predetermined arcuate distance around the second end of the cylinder, wherein the second stop member has a second open end and a second closed end, and wherein the second tab is movably disposable between the second open end and the second closed end.

The connector according to claim 8, wherein the body further comprises first indicia disposed proximate to the first open end and second indicia disposed proximate to the first closed end, wherein the first indicia indicates one of an open and closed position, and the second indicia indicates the other of the open and closed position.

11. The connector according to claim 8, wherein, when the first tab is movably disposed proximate to the first open end, the sealing member is in an open position, and when the tab is movably disposed proximate to the first closed end, the sealing member is in a closed position.

The connector according to claim 11, wherein, when the sealing member is in the open position, the proximal end of the body is in fluid communication with the distal end of the body and wherein, when the sealing member is in the closed position, the proximal end of the body is not in fluid communication with the distal end of the body.

13. The connector according to claim 8, wherein the cylinder further comprises a slot disposed on the first end of the cylinder, and wherein the slot is sized to allow insertion of a tool therein to operate the sealing member between an open position and a closed position.

14. The connector according to claim 8, wherein the cylinder further comprises a handle disposed on the first end of the cylinder, and wherein the handle is sized to allow a user to grasp the handle to operate the sealing member between an open position and a closed position.

15. The connector according to claim 8, further comprising at least one o-ring disposed between the body and the sealing member on either side of the passage.

16. The connector according to claim 1, wherein the conduit comprises a catheter.

17. A connector for a medical device comprising:

a body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a passage extending therethrough between the proximal end and the distal end, fluidly connecting the proximal end and the distal end, wherein the proximal end includes a fitting for releasably connecting the connector to an external device, and wherein the distal end is fluidly connected to a conduit; and

a cylinder rotatably disposed in the passage between first position and a second position, wherein the cylinder includes an opening extending generally diametrically therethrough.

18. The connector according to claim 17, wherein the body further comprises a stop disposed on an exterior thereof and the cylinder comprises a tab engageable with the stop to limit rotation of the cylinder.

19. The connector according to claim 17, wherein the cylinder has an opening extending generally diametrically therethough and a tab extending therefrom, and wherein body comprises a first stop portion disposed along an outer diameter of the cylinder and a second stop portion disposed a predetermined arcuate distance around the outer diameter of the cylinder from the first stop, and wherein the tab is movably disposed between the first stop portion and the second stop portion.

The connector according to claim 19, wherein the body further comprises first indicia disposed proximate to the first stop portion and second indicia disposed proximate to the second stop portion, wherein the first indicia indicates one of an open and closed position, and the second indicia indicates the other of the open and closed position.

The connector according to claim 19, wherein, when the tab is movably disposed proximate to the first stop portion, the cylinder is in one of an open position and a closed position, and when the tab is movably disposed proximate to the second stop portion, the cylinder is in the other of the open position and the closed position.

22. The connector according to claim 21, wherein, when the cylinder is in the open position, the proximal end of the body is in fluid communication with the distal end of the body and wherein, when the cylinder is in the closed position, the proximal end of the body is not in fluid communication with the distal end of the body.

23. The connector according to claim 17, wherein the conduit comprises a catheter.

24. The connector according to claim 17, further comprising at least one o-ring disposed between the body and the cylinder on either side of the passage.
