Abstract

A combination glucose measuring and insulin pumping device is described. The two major components, a glucose measuring module and an insulin pump, are held together by a quick attach and release mechanism. Communication between the glucose measuring module and the insulin pump is by a wireless modality. The glucose measuring module determines the glucose level in a sample, and wirelessly transmits the data to the insulin pump, where the data are stored in a memory, and are available for visual display on the insulin pump, and for incorporation into selection of appropriate protocols for the rate of insulin infusion by the pump into the patient.

Claims

1. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system comprising:

a glucose sensor module;

an insulin pump including a visual display;

a quick attach and release mechanism for detachably coupling the glucose sensor module and the insulin pump; and

a wireless data communication system for transmitting data between the glucose sensor module and the insulin pump.

2. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein the quick attach and release mechanism is integrally formed with the glucose sensor module.

3. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein the wireless data communication system comprises an infrared transmitter and receiver in said module and an infrared transmitter and receiver in said insulin pump.

4. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein said system comprises a single visual display.

5. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein said module does not include a visual display.

6. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein said insulin pump includes a housing and the housing includes control buttons mounted in the housing.

7. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 comprising control means for controlling the operation of the glucose module, wherein said control means comprises control buttons mounted on said insulin pump.

8. A glucose sensing and insulin delivery system according to claim 1 wherein said insulin pump comprises a watertight housing.

9. A glucose sensor module comprising:

a glucose sensor module housing, and within the housing;

a glucose sensor strip connector;

microprocessor means for receiving data from a glucose sensor strip via the connector and for determining data relating to a glucose value based on a sample in said strip;

a wireless data transmission system communicating with the microprocessor for receiving said data and wirelessly transmitting said data from the module;

a mechanical clasp shaped to permit removable attachment of the module with an insulin pump; and

a glucose test strip port opening in the housing.

10. The glucose sensor module of claim 9 wherein the module comprises a visual display.

11. The glucose sensor module of claim 9 wherein the wireless data transmission system comprises one of an infrared transmitter and receiver and a short range radio frequency transmitter and receiver.

12. The glucose sensor module of claim 9 wherein the glucose test strip is an electrochemical enzymatic biosensor.

13. A method of measuring the glucose level of a diabetic using a modular glucose measuring module and insulin pump combination comprising the steps of:

(a) attaching a glucose measuring module comprising means for measuring glucose in a blood sample to a watertight insulin pump housing, using a mechanical clasp comprising a quick attach and release mechanism;

(b) inserting a glucose test strip in the module;

(c) contacting the glucose test strip to a blood sample;

(d) determining data relating to a glucose value based on said sample using a microprocessor in the module;

(e) transmitting said data wirelessly from said module to said insulin pump and converting said data to a glucose value using a microprocessor in said pump;

(f) displaying said glucose value on a display on said pump; and

(g) detaching the clasp and module from the pump housing.
