Abstract

This disclosure relates to varying load and modulation applied to each of multiple frequency subchannels based on anticipated attenuation experienced by those subchannels. Communicating data includes identifying a static component of a transmission medium for wideband communications having at least two subchannels, determining a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component, selecting wideband modulation schemes for the subchannels based on the function determined, and communicating a data signal over the subchannels. Independent demodulation functions may be applied to at least two of the subchannels.

Claims

1. A method for communicating data, the method comprising:

identifying a static component of a transmission medium for wideband communications having at least two subchannels;

determining a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component;

selecting wideband modulation schemes for the subchannels based on the function determined; and

communicating a data signal over the subchannels.

2. The method as in claim 1 further comprising independently applying the selected wideband modulation schemes to each of the subchannels.

3. The method as in claim 2 wherein independently applying the selected wideband modulation schemes includes using separate modulators for each of the subchannels to apply the selected modulation schemes.

4. The method as in claim 1 wherein:

identifying the static component includes independently identifying the static component on each of the subchannels;

determining the function includes determining the function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component of each of the subchannels; and

selecting the wideband modulation scheme includes selecting a wideband modulation scheme to optimize throughput on each of the subchannels based on the function determined on each of the subchannels.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein:

determining the function includes taking a measurement of the noise or attenuation versus frequency at a time interval other than a frame-by-frame time interval and determining the function of the noise or the attenuation versus the frequency for the static component based on the measurement; and

selecting the wideband modulation scheme includes selecting the wideband modulation scheme at a time of the measurement based on the function determined.

6. The method as in claim 1 wherein determining the function includes averaging a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component over a period of time.

7. The method as in claim 1 wherein the static component includes noise as a relatively static function of frequency.

8. The method as in claim 1 wherein the static component includes attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

9. The method as in claim 1 wherein the static component includes noise and attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

10. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

identifying a dynamic component of the transmission medium for the wideband communications;

creating an adaptive filter based on the dynamic component; and

applying the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

11. The method as in claim 10 wherein applying the adaptive filter includes applying the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal on each of the subchannels for the wideband communication.

12. The method as in claim 10 wherein the adaptive filter includes a noise filter.

13. The method as in claim 10 wherein the adaptive filter includes a channel filter.

14. The method as in claim 10 wherein the adaptive filter includes a frequency-domain equalizer.

15. The method as in claim 10 wherein the static component is static relative to the dynamic component.

16. The method as in claim 10 wherein the dynamic component includes noise that varies as a function of frequency.

17. The method as in claim 10 wherein the dynamic component includes attenuation that varies as a function of frequency.

18. The method as in claim 10 wherein the dynamic component includes noise and attenuation that vary as a function of frequency.

19. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a channel filter by averaging elements of the channel filter based on the static component; and

applying the channel filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

20. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a noise filter by averaging elements of the noise filter based on the static component; and

applying the noise filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

21. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a frequency-domain equalizer by averaging elements of the frequency-domain equalizer based on the static component; and

applying the frequency-domain equalizer to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

22. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a filter by averaging the function of noise versus the frequency; and

applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

23. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a filter by averaging the function of attenuation versus the frequency; and

applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

24. The method as in claim 1 further comprising:

creating a filter by averaging the function of noise and attenuation versus the frequency; and

applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

25. The method as in claim 1 further comprising applying independent demodulation functions for at least two of the subchannels.

26. The method as in claim 25 wherein applying independent demodulation functions includes using a separate demodulator for the at least two subchannels to apply the demodulations functions.

27. The method as in claim 25 wherein applying independent demodulation functions includes applying separate demodulation algorithms for the at least two subchannels.

28. The method as in claim 1 wherein selecting the wideband modulation schemes includes selecting wideband modulation schemes for the at least two subchannels to optimize orthogonality between each of the subchannels.

29. The method as in claim 28 wherein the modulation schemes include offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) schemes.

30. The method as in claim 1 further comprising selecting a forward error correction code based on a length of a frame and a rate of retransmission.

31. The method as in claim 1 further comprising selecting an error detection code to determine a level of error detection and a rate of retransmission.

32. The method as in claim 1 further comprising attaching to new data an acknowledgement for a retransmission of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

33. The method as in claim 32 wherein attaching to the new data includes attaching to the new data a data block that requires retransmission.

34. The method as in claim 1 further comprising attaching to new data an acknowledgement for correct reception of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

35. The method as in claim 1 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

36. The method as in claim 1 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

37. A method for communicating data, the method comprising:

in a first transmitter on a first channel, detecting a state of communications by a second transmitter over a second channel; and

synchronizing transmissions by the first transmitter with transmissions by the second transmitter based on the state detected.

38. The method as in claim 37 wherein the first channel includes a first wire and the second channel includes a second wire that differs from the first wire.

39. The method as in claim 37 wherein detecting the state of communications includes detecting a receiving state.

40. The method as in claim 37 wherein detecting the state of communications includes detecting a transmitting state.

41. The method as in claim 37 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wires at an access point at a user premise.

42. The method as in claim 37 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

43. A method for communicating data, the method comprising:

identifying frequencies in a wideband communication channel that require reduced emissions; and

applying a digital frequency-domain filter to a transmitted signal to reduce the emissions of the identified frequencies.

44. The method as in claim 43 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

45. The method as in claim 43 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

46. The method as in claim 43 wherein identifying the frequencies includes identifying frequencies identified by a regulatory agency for reduced emissions.

47. The method as in claim 43 wherein identifying the frequencies includes identifying frequencies that interfere with other devices or communications.

48. A system for communicating data, comprising:

a processor module that is structured and arranged to identify a static component of a transmission medium for wideband communications having at least two subchannels, determine a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component, and select wideband modulation schemes for the subchannels based on the function determined; and

a transmit module that is structured and arranged to communicate a data signal over the subchannels.

49. The system of claim 48 further comprising a modulator module having one or more modulators that are structured and arranged to independently apply the selected wideband modulation schemes to each of the subchannels.

50. The system of claim 49 wherein the modulator module uses separate modulators for each of the subchannels to apply the selected modulation schemes.

51. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to:

independently identify the static component on each of the subchannels;

determine the function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component of each of the subchannels; and

select a wideband modulation scheme to optimize throughput on each of the subchannels based on the function determined on each of the subchannels.

52. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to:

take a measurement of the noise or attenuation versus frequency at a time interval other than a frame-by-frame time interval and determine the function of the noise or the attenuation versus the frequency for the static component based on the measurement; and

select the wideband modulation scheme at a time of the measurement based on the function determined.

53. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to average a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component over a period of time.

54. The system of claim 48 wherein the static component includes noise as a relatively static function of frequency.

55. The system of claim 48 wherein the static component includes attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

56. The system of claim 48 wherein the static component includes noise and attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

57. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to identify a dynamic component of the transmission medium for the wideband communications, and further comprising:

an adaptive filter that is created based on the dynamic component and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

58. The system of claim 57 wherein the adaptive filter is applied to the communicated data signal on each of the subchannels for the wideband communication.

59. The system of claim 57 wherein the adaptive filter includes a noise filter.

60. The system of claim 57 wherein the adaptive filter includes a channel filter.

61. The system of claim 57 wherein the adaptive filter includes a frequency-domain equalizer.

62. The system of claim 57 wherein the static component is static relative to the dynamic component.

63. The system of claim 57 wherein the dynamic component includes noise that varies as a function of frequency.

64. The system of claim 57 wherein the dynamic component includes attenuation that varies as a function of frequency.

65. The system of claim 57 wherein the dynamic component includes noise and attenuation that vary as a function of frequency.

66. The system of claim 48 further comprising a channel filter that is created by averaging elements of the channel filter based on the static component and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

67. The system of claim 48 further comprising a noise filter that is created by averaging elements of the noise filter based on the static component and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

68. The system of claim 48 further comprising a frequency-domain equalizer that is created by averaging elements of the frequency-domain equalizer based on the static component and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

69. The system of claim 48 further comprising a filter that is created by averaging the function of noise versus the frequency and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

70. The system of claim 48 further comprising a filter that is created by averaging the function of attenuation versus the frequency and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

71. The system of claim 48 further comprising a filter that is created by averaging the function of noise and attenuation versus the frequency and applied to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

72. The system of claim 48 further comprising a demodulator module having one or more demodulators that are structured and arranged to apply independent demodulation functions for at least two of the subchannels.

73. The system of claim 72 wherein the demodulator module is structured and arranged to using separate demodulators for the at least two subchannels to apply the demodulations functions.

74. The system of claim 72 wherein the demodulator module is structured and arranged to apply separate demodulation algorithms for the at least two subchannels.

75. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to select wideband modulation schemes for the at least two subchannels to optimize orthogonality between each of the subchannels.

76. The system of claim 75 wherein the modulation schemes include offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) schemes.

77. The system of claim 48 further comprising an error correction module that is structured and arranged to select a forward error correction code based on a length of a frame and a rate of retransmission.

78. The system of claim 48 further comprising an error detection module that is structured and arranged to select an error detection code to determine a level of error detection and a rate of retransmission.

79. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to attach to new data an acknowledgement for a retransmission of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

80. The system of claim 79 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to attach to the new data a data block that requires retransmission.

81. The system of claim 48 wherein the processor is structured and arranged to attach to new data an acknowledgement for correct reception of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

82. The system of claim 48 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

83. The system of claim 48 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

84. A system for communicating data, comprising:

a first transmitter on a first channel; and

a second transmitter on a second channel, wherein the first transmitter is structured and arranged to detect a state of communications by the second transmitter over the second channel and to synchronize transmissions by the first transmitter with transmissions by the second transmitter based on the state detected.

85. The system of claim 84 wherein the first channel includes a first wire and the second channel includes a second wire that differs from the first wire.

86. The system of claim 84 wherein the state of communications includes a receiving state.

87. The system of claim 84 wherein the state of communications includes a transmitting state.

88. The system of claim 84 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wires at an access point at a user premise.

89. The system of claim 84 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

90. A system for communicating data, comprising:

a processor that is structured and arranged to identify frequencies in a wideband communication channel that require reduced emissions; and

a digital frequency-domain filter that is applied to a transmitted signal to reduce the emissions of the identified frequencies.

91. The system of claim 90 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

92. The system of claim 90 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

93. The system of claim 90 wherein the identified frequencies include frequencies identified by a regulatory agency for reduced emissions.

94. The system of claim 90 wherein the identified frequencies include frequencies that interfere with other devices or communications.

95. A system for communicating data, comprising:

means for identifying a static component of a transmission medium for wideband communications having at least two subchannels;

means for determining a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component;

means for selecting wideband modulation schemes for the subchannels based on the function determined; and

means for communicating a data signal over the subchannels.

96. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for independently applying the selected wideband modulation schemes to each of the subchannels.

97. The system of claim 96 wherein the means for independently applying the selected wideband modulation schemes includes means for using separate modulators for each of the subchannels to apply the selected modulation schemes.

98. The system of claim 95 wherein:

the means for identifying the static component includes means for independently identifying the static component on each of the subchannels;

the means for determining the function includes means for determining the function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component of each of the subchannels; and

the means for selecting the wideband modulation scheme includes means for selecting a wideband modulation scheme to optimize throughput on each of the subchannels based on the function determined on each of the subchannels.

99. The system of claim 95 wherein:

the means for determining the function includes means for taking a measurement of the noise or attenuation versus frequency at a time interval other than a frame-by-frame time interval and means for determining the function of the noise or the attenuation versus the frequency for the static component based on the measurement; and

the means for selecting the wideband modulation scheme includes means for selecting the wideband modulation scheme at a time of the measurement based on the function determined.

100. The system of claim 95 wherein the means for determining the function includes means for averaging a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component over a period of time.

101. The system of claim 95 wherein the static component includes noise as a relatively static function of frequency.

102. The system of claim 95 wherein the static component includes attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

103. The system of claim 95 wherein the static component includes noise and attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

104. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for identifying a dynamic component of the transmission medium for the wideband communications;

means for creating an adaptive filter based on the dynamic component; and

means for applying the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

105. The system of claim 104 wherein the means for applying the adaptive filter includes means for applying the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal on each of the subchannels for the wideband communication.

106. The system of claim 104 wherein the adaptive filter includes a noise filter.

107. The system of claim 104 wherein the adaptive filter includes a channel filter.

108. The system of claim 104 wherein the adaptive filter includes a frequency-domain equalizer.

109. The system of claim 104 wherein the static component is static relative to the dynamic component.

110. The system of claim 104 wherein the dynamic component includes noise that varies as a function of frequency.

111. The system of claim 104 wherein the dynamic component includes attenuation that varies as a function of frequency.

112. The system of claim 104 wherein the dynamic component includes noise and attenuation that vary as a function of frequency.

113. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a channel filter by averaging elements of the channel filter based on the static component; and

means for applying the channel filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

114. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a noise filter by averaging elements of the noise filter based on the static component; and

means for applying the noise filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

115. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a frequency-domain equalizer by averaging elements of the frequency-domain equalizer based on the static component; and

means for applying the frequency-domain equalizer to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

116. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a filter by averaging the function of noise versus the frequency; and

means for applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

117. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a filter by averaging the function of attenuation versus the frequency; and

means for applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

118. The system of claim 95 further comprising:

means for creating a filter by averaging the function of noise and attenuation versus the frequency; and

means for applying the filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

119. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for applying independent demodulation functions for at least two of the subchannels.

120. The system of claim 119 wherein the means for applying independent demodulation functions includes means for using a separate demodulator for the at least two subchannels to apply the demodulations functions.

121. The system of claim 119 wherein the means for applying independent demodulation functions includes means for applying separate demodulation algorithms for the at least two subchannels.

122. The system of claim 95 wherein the means for selecting the wideband modulation schemes includes means for selecting wideband modulation schemes for the at least two subchannels to optimize orthogonality between each of the subchannels.

123. The system of claim 122 wherein the modulation schemes include offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) schemes.

124. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for selecting a forward error correction code based on a length of a frame and a rate of retransmission.

125. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for selecting an error detection code to determine a level of error detection and a rate of retransmission.

126. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for attaching to new data an acknowledgement for a retransmission of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

127. The system of claim 126 wherein the means for attaching includes means for attaching to the new data a data block that requires retransmission.

128. The system of claim 95 further comprising means for attaching to new data an acknowledgement for correct reception of previously transmitted data communicated across the transmission medium.

129. The system of claim 95 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

130. The system of claim 95 wherein the transmission medium includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

131. A system for communicating data, comprising:

in a first transmitter on a first channel, means for detecting a state of communications by a second transmitter over a second channel; and

means for synchronizing transmissions by the first transmitter with transmissions by the second transmitter based on the state detected.

132. The system of claim 131 wherein the first channel includes a first wire and the second channel includes a second wire that differs from the first wire.

133. The system of claim 131 wherein the means for detecting the state of communications includes means for detecting a receiving state.

134. The system of claim 131 wherein the means for detecting the state of communications includes means for detecting a transmitting state.

135. The system of claim 131 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wires at an access point at a user premise.

136. The system of claim 131 wherein the first channel and the second channel are included in copper telephone wires between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

137. A system for communicating data, comprising:

means for identifying frequencies in a wideband communication channel that require reduced emissions; and

means for applying a digital frequency-domain filter to a transmitted signal to reduce the emissions of the identified frequencies.

138. The system of claim 137 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.

139. The system of claim 137 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a cable riser in multi-tenant units and multi-dwelling buildings.

140. The system of claim 137 wherein the means for identifying the frequencies includes means for identifying frequencies identified by a regulatory agency for reduced emissions.

141. The system of claim 137 wherein the means for identifying the frequencies includes means for identifying frequencies that interfere with other devices or communications.

142. A computer program stored on a computer readable medium or a propagated signal for communicating data, comprising:

a processor code segment that causes the computer to identify a static component of a transmission medium for wideband communications having at least two subchannels, determine a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component, and select wideband modulation schemes for the subchannels based on the function determined; and

a transmit code segment that causes the computer to communicate a data signal over the subchannels.

143. The computer program of claim 142 further comprising a modulator code segment that causes the computer to independently apply the selected wideband modulation schemes to each of the subchannels.

144. The computer program of claim 143 wherein the modulator code segment causes the computer to use separate modulators for each of the subchannels to apply the selected modulation schemes.

145. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the processor code segment causes the computer to:

independently identify the static component on each of the subchannels;

determine the function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component of each of the subchannels; and

select a wideband modulation scheme to optimize throughput on each of the subchannels based on the function determined on each of the subchannels.

146. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the processor code segment causes the computer to;

take a measurement of the noise or attenuation versus frequency at a time interval other than a frame-by-frame time interval and determine the function of the noise or the attenuation versus the frequency for the static component based on the measurement; and

select the wideband modulation scheme at a time of the measurement based on the function determined.

147. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the processor code segment causes the computer to average a function of noise or attenuation versus frequency for the static component over a period of time.

148. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the static component includes noise as a relatively static function of frequency.

149. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the static component includes attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

150. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the static component includes noise and attenuation as a relatively static function of frequency.

151. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the processor code segment causes the computer to identify a dynamic component of the transmission medium for the wideband communications, and further comprising:

an adaptive filter code segment that causes the computer to create an adaptive filter based on the dynamic component and apply the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

152. The computer program of claim 142 wherein the adaptive filter code segment causes the computer to apply the adaptive filter to the communicated data signal on each of the subchannels for the wideband communication.

153. The computer program of claim 151 wherein the adaptive filter includes a noise filter.

154. The computer program of claim 151 wherein the adaptive filter includes a channel filter.

155. The computer program of claim 151 wherein the adaptive filter includes a frequency-domain equalizer.

156. The computer program of claim 151 wherein the static component is static relative to the dynamic component.

157. The computer program of claim 151 wherein the dynamic component includes noise that varies as a function of frequency.

160. The computer program of claim 142 further comprising a channel filter code segment that causes the computer to create a channel filter by averaging elements of the channel filter based on the static component and apply the channel filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

161. The computer program of claim 142 further comprising a noise filter code segment that causes the computer to create a noise filter by averaging elements of the noise filter based on the static component and apply the noise filter to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

162. The computer program of claim 142 further comprising a frequency-domain equalizer code segment that causes the computer to create a frequency-domain equalizer by averaging elements of the frequency-domain equalizer based on the static component and apply the frequency-domain equalizer to the communicated data signal at a receiver.

a first transmitter code segment on a first channel; and

a second transmitter code segment on a second channel, wherein the first transmitter code segment causes the computer to detect a state of communications by the second transmitter code segment over the second channel and to synchronize transmissions by the first transmitter code segment with transmissions by the second transmitter code segment based on the state detected.

a processor code segment that causes the computer to identity frequencies in a wideband communication channel that require reduced emissions; and

a digital frequency-domain filter code segment that causes the computer to apply a digital frequency-domain filter to a transmitted signal to reduce the emissions of the identified frequencies.

185. The computer program of claim 184 wherein the wideband communication channel is over a transmission medium that includes a copper telephone wire between and including a carrier'"'"'s facility and a termination of the copper telephone wire at an access point at a user premise.
