17. A system for a vehicle having a drive line comprising:

a variable displacement engine capable of providing torque to drive the vehicle, said engine having a plurality of cylinders;
a motor capable of providing torque to drive the vehicle; and
an electrical storage device operatively connected to the motor and capable of providing electrical power to the motor, where during at least a first condition of said electrical storage device, both said engine and said motor provide torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle, and said engine operates with some of said engine cylinders disabled during at least a portion of said first condition, and said engine operates with all of said engine cylinders active during at least another portion of said first condition, and during at least a second condition of said electrical storage device, said engine provides all requested torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle, and said engine operates with some of said engine cylinders disabled during at least a portion of said second condition, and said engine operates with all of said engine cylinders active during at least another portion of said second condition. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 42, 43, 44)

A method for operating a vehicle, the vehicle having a variable displacement engine capable of providing torque to drive the vehicle, a motor capable of providing torque to drive the vehicle, an electrical system with an electrical storage device operatively connected to the motor and capable of providing electrical power to the motor, and a driver operated control, the method comprising:

receiving an input from the driver operated control;
in response to and depending upon said received input and a condition of said electrical system;
providing torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle from both said engine and said motor, where said engine operates with some of said engine cylinders disabled;
providing torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle from both said engine and said motor, where said engine operates with all of said engine cylinders operating;
providing torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle from said engine, where said engine operates with some of said engine cylinders disabled and provides all of said torque that drives the vehicle; and
providing torque to the vehicle drive line to drive the vehicle from said engine, where said engine operates with all of said engine cylinders operating and provides all of said torque that drives the vehicle. - View Dependent Claims (28, 29, 30, 31)
