Abstract

A method of making a fiber optic accelerometer includes (a) drawing an optical fiber through a resin; (b) winding the resin coated fiber onto a disc mounted on an assembly having a central shaft; and (c) curing the resin-coated fiber. The optical fiber may be drawn through a resin by providing a container filled with a resin having an orifice therethrough and drawing the fiber through the orifice. The resin may be cured such that the fiber is bonded to the disc by curing the resin to the fiber and the disc at the same time.

Claims

1. A method of making a fiber optic accelerometer, comprising:

a) drawing an optical fiber through a resin;

b) winding said resin coated fiber onto a disc mounted on an assembly having a central shaft; and

c) curing said resin-coated fiber.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising wiping excess resin from said fiber.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said disc is mounted on an assembly having a central shaft.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein drawing an optical fiber through a resin includes providing a container filled with a resin having an orifice therethrough and drawing said fiber through said orifice.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the curing of the resin such that the fiber is bonded to said disc.

4. The method of claim 4, wherein winding said resin coated fiber includes providing a gap between said central shaft and said resin coated fiber.

7. A fiber optic accelerometer, comprised of:

a resin-coated fiber wound on a disc to create two fiber coils bonded to

said disc and wherein said disc is mounted on an assembly having a central shaft.

8. The fiber optic accelerometer of claim 7, wherein a gap is located between said two fiber coils the central shaft.

9. The fiber optic accelerometer of claim 7, wherein said resin-coated fiber is cured onto said disc.

10. The fiber optic accelerometer of claim 9, wherein said disc is a flexural disc.

11. The fiber optic accelerometer of claim 7, wherein the space between the fibers of each coil is filled with resin.

12. A method of making a fiber optic accelerometer, comprising:

a) drawing an optical fiber through a resin;

b) winding said resin coated fiber onto a disc mounted on an assembly having a central shaft such that space between the fiber is filled with resin; and

c) curing said resin-coated fiber.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising wiping excess resin from said fiber.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein said disc is mounted on an assembly having a central shaft.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein winding said resin coated fiber includes providing a gap between said central shaft and said resin coated fiber.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein drawing an optical fiber through a resin includes providing a container filled with a resin having an orifice therethrough and drawing said fiber through said orifice.

17. The method of claim 12 further comprising the curing of the resin such that the fiber is bonded to said disc.
