Abstract

One method involves the use of stored value account that may be used, for example, to make internet payments, and that can be credited using a variety of payment techniques. Such a method involves receiving money at a money transfer location from a potential purchaser. The money is then stored as an electronic record in a stored value account of the purchaser. This money is then available for transfer at the request of the purchaser. Upon such a request, the money may be electronically sent to a recipient and the stored value account may be debited.

Claims

1. A method for electronically transferring money from a sender to a recipient, the method comprising:

receiving, at a money transfer station, money from the sender in the form of cash or negotiable instrument;

crediting the money to a stored value account associated with the sender;

receiving, at a money transfer system, information from the sender on the recipient that is to receive money;

receiving, at the money transfer system, a request from the sender to transfer at least a portion of money in a stored value account the received money to the recipient;

electronically processing the request using the money transfer system;

debiting the stored value account for the money transferred; and

maintaining the balance in the stored value account of money not transferred to the recipient, so that the balance may be used for one or more subsequent transactions by the sender using the stored value account.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the request comprises receiving a computer request over a network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the request comprises receiving one of a telephone request, an in-person request, and a voice response unit request.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the cash or negotiable instrument is physically presented to a money transfer agent at the money transfer location.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, on an ATM network interface, a second request from the sender to obtain at least a portion of the balance;

transmitting the portion of the balance to the sender using the ATM network; and

debiting the portion of the balance from the stored value account.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the recipient is a holder of an outstanding bill of the sender.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one subsequent transaction comprises using the balance in the stored value account for a subsequent purchase of goods or services, the balance accessed by the sender using a debit card associated with the stored value account.

8. A method for paying a retailer for a purchase comprising:

receiving, at a point-of-sale device, a debit card account identifier from a customer, the debit card account identifier associated with a stored value account of the customer;

accessing a debit network subscribed to by the retailer;

using the debit network to transmit a request, from the retailer to a money transfer system, to perform a debit transaction from the stored value account for an amount associated with the purchase.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising using the money transfer system to debit the amount from the stored value account.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising electronically sending the amount to the retailer.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the debit network is an ATM network.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising receiving a personal identification number (PIN) from the customer and wherein transmitting the request comprises transmitting the PIN.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising before receiving the debit card account identifier, receiving, at a money transfer station, money from the sender in the form of cash or negotiable instrument;

and crediting the money to the stored value account.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein the debit card is capable of accessing at least one ATM network.

15. A method for providing a stored value account comprising:

receiving money at a money transfer station in the form of cash or negotiable instrument from a user;

associating the money with a stored value account; and

transmitting a request to a card issuer to issue a debit card to the user to access the stored value account, the debit card capable of accessing an ATM network.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

receiving, on an ATM network interface, a request from the user to obtain at least a portion of the balance;

transmitting the portion of the balance to the user using the ATM network; and

debiting the portion of the balance from the stored value account.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising mailing a personal identification number (PIN) to the user.

18. A method for providing a stored value account comprising:

creating a stored value account for a user;

adding funds to the stored value account;

transmitting a request to a card issuer to issue a debit card to the user to access the stored value account, the debit card capable of accessing an ATM network and a closed-loop debit network; and

mailing the debit card to the user.
