Abstract

Medical devices for filtering fluids flowing through a lumen and a method of forming medical devices. The devices can be used in vascular channels, urinary tracts, biliary ducts and the like, and filter emboli and other debris generated at a treatment site.

Claims

26. A method for delivering an expandable filter to a desired location in a vessel comprising:

providing a first guidewire having proximal and distal ends;

providing a second guidewire having proximal and distal ends, a distal region, and an expandable filter carried on the distal region;

providing an introduction catheter having proximal and distal ends and a lumen sized to accept the first guidewire and sized to accept the second guidewire and expandable filter;

introducing the first guidewire into the vessel;

advancing the introduction catheter through the vessel over the first guidewire with the first guidewire received in the lumen of the introduction catheter;

introducing the second guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter;

advancing the second guidewire and expandable filter through the vessel in the lumen of the introduction catheter; and

manipulating the second guidewire and introduction catheter so that the expandable filter extends from the distal end of the introduction catheter at the desired location in the vessel.

27. The method of claim 26 further comprising removing the first guidewire from the lumen of the introduction catheter before introducing the second guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter.

28. The method of claim 26 further comprising removing the introduction catheter from the second guidewire.

29. The method of claim 26 where the introduction catheter is a balloon catheter or an atherectomy catheter.

30. The method of claim 26 wherein the vessel is an artery and where the introduction catheter is used to expand the artery.

31. The method of claim 28 further comprising advancing a second catheter over the second guidewire.

32. A method for delivering an expandable filter to a desired location in a vessel comprising:

providing a first guidewire having proximal and distal ends;

providing a second guidewire having proximal and distal ends, a distal region, and an expandable filter carried on the distal region;

providing an introduction catheter having proximal and distal ends and a lumen sized to accept the first guidewire and sized to accept the second guidewire and expandable filter;

introducing the first guidewire into the lumen of the introduction catheter;

advancing the first guidewire and the introduction catheter together through the vessel;

introducing the second guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter;

advancing the second guidewire and expandable filter through the vessel in the lumen of the introduction catheter; and

manipulating the second guidewire and introduction catheter so that the expandable filter extends from the distal end of the introduction catheter at the desired location in the vessel.

33. The method of claim 32 further comprising removing the first guidewire from the lumen of the introduction catheter before introducing the second guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter.

34. The method of claim 32 further comprising removing the introduction catheter from the second guidewire.

35. The method of claim 32 where the introduction catheter is a balloon catheter or an atherectomy catheter.

36. The method of claim 32 wherein the vessel is an artery and where the introduction catheter is used to expand the artery.

37. The method of claim 34 further comprising advancing a second catheter over the second guidewire.

38. A method for delivering an expandable filter to a desired location in a vessel comprising:

providing a guidewire having proximal and distal ends, a distal region, and an expandable filter carried on the distal region;

providing an introduction catheter having proximal and distal ends and a lumen sized to accept the guidewire and expandable filter;

advancing the introduction catheter to a region of interest in the vessel;

introducing the guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter;

advancing the guidewire and expandable filter through the vessel in the lumen of the introduction catheter; and

manipulating the guidewire and introduction catheter so that the expandable filter extends from the distal end of the introduction catheter at the desired location in the vessel.

39. The method of claim 38 further comprising removing the introduction catheter from the guidewire.

40. The method of claim 38 where the introduction catheter is a balloon catheter or an atherectomy catheter.

41. The method of claim 38 wherein the vessel is an artery and where the introduction catheter is used to expand the artery.

42. The method of claim 39 further comprising advancing a second catheter over the guidewire.
