Abstract

This invention generally relates to wired and wireless ultra wideband (UWB) data communications apparatus and methods, and in particular to UWB receiver systems and architectures, and to UWB transmission systems and signals. A UWB receiver system for receiving a UWB signal comprising a plurality of pulses, the system comprising: a receiver front end to receive a UWB signal; a reference UWB signal store for storing a reference UWB signal; and a correlator configured to correlate said received UWB signal with a plurality of differently delayed versions of said stored reference signal to co-determine a timing and a phase of a received UWB signal pulse; whereby a UWB signal carrying data encoded by both pulse position and pulse phase is decodeable.

12. A UWB receiver system for receiving a UWB signal comprising a plurality of pulses, the system comprising:

a receiver front end to receive a UWB signal;

a reference UWB signal store for storing a reference UWB signal; and

a correlator configured to correlate said received UWB signal with a plurality of differently delayed versions of said stored reference signal to co-determine a timing and a phase of a received UWB signal pulse;

whereby a UWB signal carrying data encoded by both pulse position and pulse phase is decodeable.

13. A UWB receiver system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said correlator comprises a bank of multiply-accumulate modules, each for correlating a differently delayed version of said stored reference signal and said received signal to determine a position in time of a said pulse.

14. A UWB receiver system as claimed in claim 13 wherein said correlator comprises a discriminator coupled to an output from each of said multiply-accumulate modules for determining a phase of a said pulse.

15. A UWB receiver system as claimed in claim 12 further comprising means for storing a plurality of UWB reference signals for correlation with said received signal to determine a pulse shape, for decoding pulse-shape encoded data.

16. A UWB receiver system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said phase encoding comprises bi-phase modulation.

17. A UWB receiver system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said reference UWB signal comprises a plurality of multipath components.

19. A transmitter system as claimed in claim 17 wherein said encoding of data using pulse phase comprises bi-phase modulation.

18. A UWB transmitter system for transmitting a UWB signal comprising a plurality of pulses, the transmitter system comprising:

an encoder having an input to receive information data as encoded data for transmission, to encode said information data for transmission using a combination of pulse position in time and pulse phase;

means to superimpose a deterministic pulse position variation on said encoded data; and

a UWB transmitter coupled to said encoder to transmit said encoded data as UWB pulses.

20. A method of communicating data in a UWB communications system by means of a UWB signal comprising a plurality of pulses, the method comprising:

encoding said data in said UWB signal by modulating in combination both pulse position in time and pulse phase;

communicating said encoded data with said UWB communications system by means of said UWB signal; and

decoding said encoded data by demodulating pulse positions in time and pulse phases in said communicated UWB signal by jointly determining said pulse positions in time and said pulse phases.

21. A method as claimed in claim 20 wherein said encoding of data using pulse phase comprises bi-phase modulation.

22. A UWB signal for communicating data in a UWB communications system, said UWB signal comprising a plurality of pulses, wherein said communicated data is encoded by means of a combination of both positions in time of said pulses and phases of said pulses, and wherein said pulses further have a superimposed deterministic pulse position variation.

23. A signal as claimed in claim 22 wherein said encoding of data using pulse phase comprised bi-phase modulation.
