Abstract

A method and system for managing email or other messaging and attachments to messages which are forwarded to devices having limited processing and memory capacity. The method includes the steps of: receiving a user configuration categorizing messages for the user by elements of the message; accessing the user message datastore upon receipt of at least one new message for the user to a user data store; comparing said at least one new message to a set of user specific rules; rendering a message summary including at least one link accessible by the processing device, the link enabling action with respect to the message when selected by the user; and outputting the message summary to a user device.

Claims

1. A method for management of messaging for devices having a limited processing capacity, comprising:

receiving a user configuration categorizing messages for the user by elements of the message;

accessing the user message datastore upon receipt of at least one new message for the user to a user data store;

comparing said at least one new message to a set of user specific rules;

rendering a message summary including at least one link accessible by the processing device, the link enabling action with respect to the message when selected by the user; and

outputting the message summary to a user device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the link includes a session ID and an instruction.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the rendered message comprises providing the message suited to a user device.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the action is to display the message.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the message includes an attachment, and the action manipulates an attachment included with the message.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the attachment is downloaded to the user device.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the attachment is streamed to a user device.

8. The method of claim 5 wherein the message is forwarded to another user.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the message is a summary of all messages sent to the user and includes links to display said messages.

10. The method of claim 1 further including receiving an instruction when a user selects the at least one link.

11. The method of claim 1 further including the step of processing the link and retuning a second message to the limited processing device implementing the link.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the link is to view a next message item.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the link is forward or reply and insert user-configured email data into the message.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the link is reply to message.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the link is to contact the sender of the message directly using a voice link.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the command includes manipulating a message attachment.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the command is to stream the attachment to a second device coupled to the limited processing device.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the command is to download the attachment.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the command is to forward the attachment to another user.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of rendering includes rendering the message for a WAP browser.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of rendering includes rendering the message for an IMAP enabled user device.

22. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of accessing comprises retrieving a change log for a synchronization system, the change log including message information.

23. A message management system, comprising:

a user preferences dataset, including user device information and the user rule set;

a filtering engine including a rule set for providing messages to a user;

a user message datastore access engine, retrieving messages from a user'"'"'s messaging service and providing the message to the filtering engine;

a rendering engine responsive to the filtering engine, the rendering engine converting messages into a limited capacity device readable format based on the user device information, and rendering a summary message indicating the state of messages received since a triggering event; and

a session manager retrieving messages from a message datastore, providing the messages to the filtering engine, and outputting messages to a user device.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the rule set includes groups of users and rules are applied within said groups of users.

25. The system of claim 23 further including a synchronization system, the synchronization system including:

a sync session manager retrieving a plurality of change logs for the user and decoding the change logs.

26. The system of claim 23 further including a sync session data cache, including decrypted change log information for the filtering system.

27. The system of claim 23 further including a user preferences interface allowing the user to define the preferences dataset.

28. The system of claim 23 further including a limited processing device agent coupled to a session manager via a network.

29. The system of claim 23 further including a limited processing device agent coupled to a user data store on the processing device and the session manager.

30. The system of claim 23 wherein the rendering engine includes a WAP renderer.

31. The system of claim 23 wherein the rendering engine includes an IMAP renderer.

32. The system of claim 23 wherein the access engine is responsive to a triggering event, and said triggering event comprises a time sequence.

33. The system of claim 23 wherein the access engine is responsive to a triggering event, and said triggering event comprises a sync.

34. The system of claim 23 wherein the access engine is responsive to a triggering event, and said triggering event comprises a new mail message.

35. A method of managing messages for limited capacity processing devices, comprising:

receiving a new message designated for a user;

accessing a user configuration including a device configuration profile and at least one message handling rule;

comparing the message to said at least one message handling rule;

outputting a summary message to the limited capacity device indicating a status of said at least one new message received, the summary message including at least one instruction link enabling an action with respect to the message.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein the step of receiving includes running a synchronization routine and receiving at least one change log including the new message.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein the step of accessing includes extracting the message from the change log

38. The method of claim 35 wherein the action is to display the message in a rendered format a user specific limited capacity processing device.

39. The method of claim 35 wherein the message includes an attachment, and the action manipulates an attachment included with the message.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein the attachment is downloaded to the user device.

41. The method of claim 39 wherein the attachment is streamed to a user device.

42. The method of claim 35 wherein the step of accessing is performed responsive to a triggering event.

43. The method of claim 42 wherein triggering event comprises a time sequence.

44. The method of claim 42 wherein said triggering event comprises a sync.

45. The method of claim 42 wherein comprises a new mail message.

46. The method of claim 35 wherein the action is a message forward, the user has a messaging address not associated with the device, and the message is forwarded with information signifying the user'"'"'s messaging address.

47. The method of claim 35 wherein the action is reply to message, the user has a messaging address not associated with the device, and the message is replied to with information signifying the user'"'"'s messaging address.

48. The method of claim 35 further including the step of providing a user interface to allow a user to define the user configuration.

49. The method of claim 35 further including the step of receiving a command responsive to the link, performing the action and providing a second message to the device responsive to the command.

50. The method of claim 35 wherein the step of outputting includes sending the message via a wireless network.

51. The method of claim 35 wherein the message is an SMS message.

52. The method of claim 35 wherein the message is an email.

53. One or more processor readable storage devices having processor readable code embodied on said processor readable storage devices, said processor readable code for programming one or more processors to perform a method comprising the steps of:

accessing the user message datastore;

determining a set of messages in the data store which have not been read by the user;

comparing messages in said set to a set of user specific rules;

rendering a message summary of messages in the set and other messages in the datastore, including at least one link accessible by the processing device, the link enabling action with respect to one or more messages in the set message when selected by the user; and

outputting the message summary to a user device.

54. One or more processor readable storage devices according to claim 53 wherein the step of accessing is performed by a synchronization system.

55. One or more processor readable storage devices according to claim 54 wherein the step of accessing is performed at a timed interval.

56. One or more processor readable storage devices according to claim 54 wherein the step of accessing is performed on a sync initiated event.

57. One or more processor readable storage devices according to claim 56 wherein the step of accessing is performed by extracting messages from a change log provided by the synchronization system.
