Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for a compact birefringent interference imaging spectrometer. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample. The portable system may include a first photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample; an optical lens for collecting the scattered photons; a filter for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample; and a rejection filter for blocking the photons from said first photon emission source from entering said first photon detector. The disclosure additionally relates to methods of using such portable systems.

Claims

1. A portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

a first photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample;

an optical lens for collecting the scattered photons;

a rejection filter for blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter;

said first filter for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said first photon emission source is a laser.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said first photon emission source is a light emitting diode.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein said light emitting diode is disposed as a ring.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein said light emitting diode is a plurality of light emitting diodes.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein said light emitting diode is a plurality of light emitting diodes wherein one of said plural light emitting diodes emits photons at a wavelength that is different than a wavelength of photons emitted by another of said plural light emitting diodes.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the wavelength of photons emitted by one of said plural light emitting diodes is in the ultraviolet wavelength range.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the wavelength of photons emitted by one of said plural light emitting diodes is in the near infrared wavelength range.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein said first photon detector is selected from the group consisting of:

charge-coupled device, complementary metal oxide semiconductor, charge injection device, intensified charge injection device, electron multiplying charge-coupled device, silicon photo diode, silicon avalanche diode, and other focal plane array devices.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is obtained over a predetermined period of time and said sample is stationary during said predetermined period of time.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein said scattered photons include photons emitted by said sample.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein said scattered photons include photons reflected by said sample.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is a hand-held system.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrum is a spatially accurate wavelength-resolved image.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein ones of said filtered photons each have a wavelength within a predetermined wavelength band.

17. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a second photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a second plurality of photons to thereby produce photons emitted by the sample;

a polarization beam splitter for separating the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization;

a second filter; and

a second photon detector,

wherein;

said optical lens collects the scattered photons and the emitted photons,

said first filter receives the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and provides therefrom first filtered photons,

said first photon detector receives the first filtered photons and obtains therefrom a first spectrum of the sample,

said second filter receives the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and provides therefrom second filtered photons, and

said second photon detector receives the second filtered photons and obtains therefrom a second spectrum of the sample.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein said first spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein said second spectrum is a fluorescence spectrum.

20. The system of claim 18 wherein said second spectrum is a near infrared spectrum.

21. The system of claim 17 wherein said emitted photons are fluorescent photons.

22. The system of claim 17 wherein a wavelength of said emitted photons is in the near infrared wavelength range.

23. The system of claim 1 wherein said first filter is a liquid crystal tunable filter.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the liquid crystal is nematic.

25. The system of claim 23 wherein the liquid crystal is smectic.

26. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter is pixelized.

27. The system of claim 26 further comprising a black matrix mask to prevent light leakage at an interpixel region.

28. The system of claim 23 wherein said first filter is columnized.

29. The system of claim 28 further comprising a black matrix mask to prevent light leakage at an intercolumn region.

30. The system of claim 1 wherein said first filter comprises:

a first filter stage comprising a first retarder element and a first liquid crystal cell; and

a second filter stage,

wherein either the first element or the first cell do not have a uniform thickness.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein said second stage comprises a second retarder element having a first uniform thickness and a second liquid crystal cell having a second uniform thickness.

32. The system of claim 30 wherein the first and second stages define a hybrid filter.

33. The system of claim 31 wherein the first uniform thickness and the second uniform thickness are substantially the same.

34. The system of claim 31 wherein the first element does not have a uniform thickness.

35. The system of claim 30 wherein the first element is wedge-shaped.

36. The system of claim 30 wherein the first element has a stepped-wedge shape.

37. The system of claim 30 wherein the first and second stages comprise a birefringence interference filter.

38. The system of claim 30 wherein the first and second stages comprise an Evans split element filter.

39. The system of claim 30 wherein the first and second stages comprise a Solc filter.

40. The system of claim 30 wherein the first and second stages comprise a Lyot filter.

41. The system of claim 40 including an Evans split element filter.

42. The system of claim 30 wherein said first element is comprised of quartz.

43. The system of claim 30 wherein said first element is comprised of lithium niobate.

44. The system of claim 30 wherein said first filter is a tunable filter.

45. The system of claim 30 wherein said first filter includes a polarizer.

46. The system of claim 30 wherein said first filter is pixelized.

47. The system of claim 30 wherein said first filter is columnized.

48. The system of claim 1 wherein said first optical filter comprises:

a pixelized liquid crystal stage;

a voltage source operably connected to the liquid crystal pixels; and

means for controlling the amount of voltage applied by said voltage source to ones of said pixels;

wherein the liquid crystal is substantially uniformly thick in the direction of photon travel therethrough.

49. The system of claim 1 wherein said first optical filter comprises:

a columnized liquid crystal stage;

a voltage source operably connected to the liquid crystal columns; and

means for controlling the amount of voltage applied by said voltage source to ones of said columns;

wherein the liquid crystal is substantially uniformly thick in the direction of photon travel therethrough.

50. The system of claim 1 wherein said first filter is a Fabry-Perot filter.

51. The system of claim 1 wherein said first filter is a liquid crystal tunable filter.

52. The system of claim 1 wherein said first filter is configured to operate with a handheld device.

53. The system of claim 1 further comprising a line scan Raman imaging system for receiving the collected scattered photons and providing a Raman image therefrom.

54. The system of claim 52 wherein the line scan Raman imaging system is configured to operate with a handheld device.

55. The system of claim 52 wherein the line scan Raman imaging system uses deep-X-ray lithography spectrometer.

56. A method for obtaining a spectrum of a sample using a hand-held device, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a sample;

illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons from a first photon emission source to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample;

collecting the scattered photons;

blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter;

receiving the collected scattered photons with the first filter and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

receiving the filtered photons with a first photon detector and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

57. A method for obtaining plural spectra of a sample using a hand-held device, comprising the steps of:

providing a sample;

illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons scattered by the sample;

illuminating the sample with a second plurality of photons to thereby produce photons emitted by the sample;

collecting the scattered and the emitted photons;

blocking the first and the second plurality of photons from entering a polarization beam splitter;

separating the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization from the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization using the polarization beam splitter;

receiving the scattered and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and providing therefrom first filtered photons;

receiving the first filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a first spectrum of the sample;

receiving the scattered and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and providing therefrom second filtered photons; and

receiving the second filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a second spectrum of the sample.

58. The method of claim 57 wherein the plural spectra are obtained substantially simultaneously.

59. The method of claim 57 further comprising the step of obtaining a fluorescence image and a Raman image substantially simultaneously.

60. The method of claim 57 further comprising the step of obtaining a near infrared image and a Raman image substantially simultaneously.

61. A portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

a first photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a first plurality of photons to thereby produce photons reflected by the sample;

an optical lens for collecting the reflected photons;

a rejection filter for blocking the first plurality of photons from entering a first filter;

said first filter for receiving the collected reflected photons and providing therefrom filtered photons; and

a first photon detector for receiving the filtered photons and obtaining therefrom a spectrum of the sample.

62. The system of claim 61 further comprising:

a second photon emission source for illuminating the sample with a second plurality of photons to thereby produce photons emitted by the sample;

a polarization beam splitter for separating the reflected and the emitted photons each having a first polarization from the reflected and the emitted photons each having a second polarization;

a second filter; and

a second photon detector,

wherein;

said optical lens collects the reflected photons and the emitted photons,

said first filter receives the reflected and the emitted photons each having a first polarization and provides therefrom first filtered photons,

said first photon detector receives the first filtered photons and obtains therefrom a first spectrum of the sample,

said second filter receives the reflected and the emitted photons each having a second polarization and provides therefrom second filtered photons, and

said second photon detector receives the second filtered photons and obtains therefrom a second spectrum of the sample.

63. The system of claim 62 wherein said first spectrum is a Raman spectrum.

64. The system of claim 63 wherein said second spectrum is a fluorescence spectrum.

65. The system of claim 63 wherein said second spectrum is a near infrared spectrum.

66. The system of claim 62 wherein said emitted photons are fluorescent photons.

67. The system of claim 62 wherein a wavelength of said emitted photons is in the near infrared wavelength range.
