Abstract

Improved apparatus and methods for utilizing holographic waveforms for a variety of purposes including communication. In one exemplary embodiment, the holographic waveforms are wideband in nature and transmitted over an RF bearer medium to provide, inter alia, highly covert and robust communications. A software defined radio (SDR) architecture is utilized to permit flexibility in changing e.g., air interfaces and other parameters associated with the apparatus.

Claims

1. Radio frequency communications apparatus adapted to holographically encode baseband data, said apparatus being further adapted to be selectively reconfigured to encode said data according to at least one other encoding scheme.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, comprising a digital processor and conversion apparatus, said conversion apparatus being adapted to convert signals from the digital domain to the analog domain.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said apparatus uses no carrier frequency for said transmission.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said holographic encoding comprises phase-coding to produce first phase-coded data, directly or indirectly after which at least one mathematical transform is performed on said first phase-coded data to produce transformed phase-coded data.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said at least one other encoding scheme comprises orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).

6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said at least one other encoding scheme comprises a direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) scheme.

7. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said at least one other encoding scheme comprises frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS).

8. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said at least one other encoding scheme comprises time-modulated ultra-wideband (TM-UWB).

9. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said apparatus is adapted to transmit a wideband signal having a frequency bandwidth of at least one (1) GHz.

10. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said mathematical transform comprises a Fourier transform.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said selective reconfiguration is automatically controlled by a computer program running on said apparatus.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said selective reconfiguration is automatically controlled by said computer program at least in part based on signals received from a source external to said apparatus.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said external source comprises an apparatus configured to generate said signals and transmit them to said radio frequency communications apparatus via a wireless channel.

14. Radio frequency communications apparatus adapted to receive and decode holographically encoded signals, and further receive and decode signals encoded according to another coding scheme.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, comprising a digital processor and conversion apparatus, said conversion apparatus being adapted to convert signals from the analog domain to the digital domain.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said apparatus uses no intermediate frequency down conversion.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said decoding of said holographically encoded signals comprises performing at least one mathematical inverse transform and then decoding said inverse transformed signals using a first phase-code.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, comprising performing at least a second phase decoding before said inverse transform.

19. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said another coding scheme comprises orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).

20. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said another coding scheme comprises a direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) scheme.

21. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said anther coding scheme comprises frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS).

22. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said another coding scheme comprises time-modulated ultra-wideband (TM-UWB).

23. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said another coding scheme comprises Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

24. Wideband communications apparatus, comprising:

a processor adapted to process baseband data;

data conversion apparatus operatively coupled to said processor;

an antenna operatively coupled to said conversion apparatus and adapted to radiate signals; and

at least one computer program operative to selectively change between air interface schemes;

wherein said signal processor is configured to, prior to transmission over said antenna;

phase-code said baseband data according to a first phase code; and

transform said phase-coded data to produce transformed phase-coded data; and

wherein said signal processor and said at least one computer program are configured to cooperate to implement said change.
