Abstract

The invention describes a method of producing extracts from the seeds of meadowfoam, brassicas and crambe plants. A number of subsidiary processes and steps are shown in order to extract differing fractions of oil. Products produced from the above method are also described including uses and methods of these products which include a variety of skin conditions including eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, acneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritation, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like. The extracts are also described as being a useful compound for treatment of the symptoms of such skin conditions as described above. In particular the use and extraction of glucosinolate (GSL), thiocyanates (TCL) and isothiocyanates (ITCL) is described.

Claims

1. A method of producing an oil extract from seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

said method including the steps of;

(a) washing the seed with a solvent, whereby oil from the seed is dissolved in the solvent; and

(b) separating the spent seed and the solvent solution; and

(c) distilling the solvent solution at a temperature of equal to or less than 120°

C., and a pressure equal to or less than 50 kPa to obtain an oil extract from the solvent; and

characterised in that the oil extract produced contains a therapeutically effective amount of glucosinolates (GSL) compounds.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the oil extract also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL).

3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the oil extract also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds.

4. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said solvent is selected from the group:

alcohols;

hexane;

heptane;

aliphatic solvents;

ethers;

chlorinated solvents;

chloroform;

tricholoroethylene;

carbon dioxide; and

a combination thereof.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solvent is hexane.

6. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the solvent is a binary azeotropic mixture of aliphatic solvents and alcohols.

7. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein the solvent is a binary azeotropic mixture of hexane and ethanol.

8. A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein the azeotropic mixture is approximately 79% hexane and 21% ethanol mixture.

9. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the solvent distilled from the oil extract in step (c) is recycled into the solvent wash at step (a).

10. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein, before the step of washing the seed, step (a), the seed is dressed and dried.

12. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein, before the step of washing the seed, step (a), the seed is crushed to a flaked condition.

14. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein adverse odours are removed by a further step of extract deodorising the oil extract.

15. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said method of deodorising includes the step of adding water to the oil extract and subsequently boiling off the water and residual solvent, leaving a deodorised oil extract.

16. A method as claimed in claim 15 wherein boiling occurs in an oven heated to a temperature less than 120°

C.

17. A method as claimed in claim 15 wherein boiling occurs in an oven heated to a temperature less than 80°

C.

18. A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein said method of deodorising includes the addition of a masking substance to the oil extract.

19. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the solvent laden seed is dried to separate remaining solvent as condensate from spent seed husks.

20. A method as claimed in claim 19 wherein drying is by a combination of steam treatment, under a vacuum, and the application of heat.

21. A method as claimed in claim 19, wherein condensate from the drying process is added to the oil extract during the settling process to collect any additional active fractions removed from the spent seed husks during drying.

22. An oil extract, wherein the oil is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 1.

23. A method of producing a light oil fraction from seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

the method including the steps of;

(d) forming a mixture from the oil extract as claimed in claim 22 with a solvent selected from the group including;

alcohol;

water; and

combinations thereof; and

(e) separating the mixture of step (d) into a solvent solution and oil; and

(f) drying the solvent solution from step (e) to remove the solvent and collecting the light oil fraction.

24. A method as claimed in claim 23 wherein the amount of solvent mixed with the extract oil is in an approximately equal volume.

25. A method as claimed in claim 23 wherein the alcohol is selected from the group including:

methanol;

ethanol;

other lower alcohols; and

combinations thereof.

26. A method as claimed in claim 23, wherein steps (d) to (f) are repeated one or more times.

27. A method of producing a light oil fraction from seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

the method including the steps of;

(a) mixing the oil extract made according to the method of claim 1 with at least one alcohol; and

(b) separating the alcohol solution of step (a) from the oil; and

(c) further mixing the oil from step (b) with at least one other alcohol to that used in step (g); and

(d) separating the alcohol solution of step (c) from the oil; and

(e) drying the alcohol solution from step (b) and the alcohol solution from step (d) either separately or together to remove the alcohol solvent and collecting a light oil fraction.

28. A method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the amount of alcohol mixed with the oil extract in steps (a) and (c) is in an approximately equal volume.

29. A method as claimed in claim 27, wherein the alcohol in step (g) is methanol and the alcohol in step (c) is ethanol.

30. A method as claimed in claim 23, wherein the light oil fraction contains glucosinolates (GSL).

31. A method as claimed in claim 30 wherein the light oil fraction also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL).

32. A method as claimed in claim 30, wherein the light oil fraction produced by the method above also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds.

33. A light oil fraction, wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 23.

34. A light oil fraction containing glucosinolates (GSL), wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claims 30.

35. A light oil fraction that also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL), wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 31.

36. A light oil fraction that also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds, wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 32.

37. A method of producing a therapeutic aqueous solution from the seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

the method including the step of;

mixing the oil extract as claimed in claim 22 with a base aqueous solution.

38. A method as claimed in claim 37, wherein the light oil fraction as claimed in any one of claims 33 to 36 is mixed into the base aqueous solution.

39. A method as claimed in claim 37 wherein the oil extract and light oil fraction if present, forms 1 to 50% wt of the combined mixture.

40. A method as claimed in claim 37 wherein the base aqueous solution has a water component and this water component is the solvent solution from step (e) where water is used as the solvent.

41. A method as claimed in claim 37 wherein the base aqueous solution is a cream or ointment.

42. A therapeutic aqueous solution, wherein the therapeutic aqueous solution is produced in accordance with the method as claimed in claims 37.

43. A therapeutic aqueous solution containing glucosinolates (GSL), wherein the solution is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 37.

44. A therapeutic aqueous solution that also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL), wherein the solution is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claims 37.

45. A therapeutic aqueous solution that also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds, wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 37.

46. A method of producing an oil solution from the seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

the method including the steps of;

mixing the extract solution of step (e) claim 23, where ethanol is used as the solvent, with canola oil and then evaporating this mixture to remove the ethanol and leave an oil solution.

47. A method of producing an oil solution from the seeds of plants selected from the group including:

meadowfoam;

brassicas;

crambe;

the method including the steps of;

mixing the extract solution of step (e) claim 23, where ethanol is used as the solvent, with the oil extract as claimed in step (d) claim 22, and then evaporating this mixture to remove the ethanol and leave an oil solution.

48. An oil solution, wherein the solution is produced in accordance with the method as claimed in claim 46.

49. An oil solution containing glucosinolates (GSL), wherein the solution is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 46.

50. An oil solution that also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL), wherein the solution is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 46.

51. An oil solution that also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds, wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 46.

52. The use of a compound, said compound including:

an oil extract as claimed in claim 22;

a light oil fraction as claimed in claim 33;

a therapeutic aqueous solution as claimed in claim 42;

an oil solution as claimed in claim 50;

and combinations thereof;

said use being for treatment of a skin condition selected from the group including;

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, acneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritation, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof.

53. The use of a compound, said compound including:

an oil extract as claimed in claim 22;

a light oil fraction as claimed in claim 33;

a therapeutic aqueous solution as claimed in claims 42;

an oil solution as claimed in claims 48; and

combinations thereof;

said use being for treatment of the symptoms of a skin condition selected from the group including;

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, acneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritation, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof.

54. The use as claimed in claim 52, wherein the compound is combined with a pharmaceutically and physiologically acceptable carrier.

55. The use as claimed in claims 52 in combination with UV treatment.

56. A method of treatment of a skin condition selected from the group including:

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, aceneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritations, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof;

said method being by topical application of a compound including;

an oil extract as claimed in claim 22;

a light oil fraction as claimed in claim 33;

a therapeutic aqueous solution as claimed claim 42;

an oil solution as claimed claims 48; and

combinations thereof.

57. A method of treatment of the symptoms of a skin condition selected from the group including:

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, aceneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritations, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof;

said method being by topical application of a compound including;

an oil extract as claimed claim 22;

a light oil fraction as claimed in claim 33;

a therapeutic aqueous solution as claimed in claim 42;

an oil solution as claimed in claim 48;

and combinations thereof.

58. A method of treatment as claimed in claim 56, wherein the compound is combined with a pharmaceutically and physiologically acceptable carrier.

59. A method of treatment as claimed in claim 56 in combination with UV treatment.

66. A solid composition comprising, spent seed from the method as claimed in claim 1.

80. A method as claimed in claims 27, wherein the light oil fraction contains glucosinolates (GSL).

81. A light oil fraction, wherein the fraction is extracted in accordance with the method of extraction as claimed in claim 27.

11. A method as claimed in claimed 1 wherein, before the step of washing the seed, step (a), a further step is included, said step being:

crushing the seed.

13. A method as claimed in claimed 1 wherein, subsequent to the above steps, the oil extract is stored and allowed to settle so that seed husk residue can be filtered from the oil.

60. A medicament including a therapeutic amount of glucosinolates (GSL).

61. A medicament as claimed in claim 60 wherein the medicament also contains isothiocyanate (ITCL) and thiocyanate (TCL) compounds.

62. A medicament as claimed in claim 60 wherein the composition also contains nitrile thiones and phenolic compounds.

63. A medicament as claimed in claim 60 wherein the medicament is combined with a pharmaceutically and physiologically acceptable carrier.

64. The use of a medicament as claimed in claim 60, for treatment of skin conditions selected from the group including:

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, aceneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritations, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof.

65. The use of a medicament as claimed in claims 60, for treatment of symptoms of a skin conditions selected from the group including:

eczema, facial eczema, dermatitis, external ulcers, welts, rashes, insect bites, allergic reactions and other irritations, burns, wounds, psoriasis, aceneiform eruptions, dryness, dry skin, irritations, skin atrophy, secondary infections and the like; and

combinations thereof.
