Abstract

Nutriceutical and pharmaceutical formulations for treating neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer'"'"'s disease are provided. Nutriceutical formulations include two or more of folate, vitamin E, and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR). Pharmaceutical formulations include two or more of 3-deaza-adenosine (DZA), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM).

Claims

1. A method for treating a neurodegenerative disorder in a mammal, the method comprising administering to the mammal an amount of a nutriceutical formulation effective to ameliorate the effects of neurodegeneration, wherein the nutriceutical formulation comprises at least two of the agents, folate, vitamin E, and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR).

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the formulation comprises folate, vitamin E, and ALCAR.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mammal suffers from a neurodegenerative disorder selected from the group consisting of Alzheimer'"'"'s disease, Parkinson'"'"'s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the mammal is a human.

5. the method of claim 1, wherein a level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mammal is reduced compared to a reference.

6. A composition useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders comprising at least two of the agents, folate, vitamin E, and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR).

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the composition comprises folate, vitamin E, and ALCAR.

8. A method for culturing cells, the method comprising contacting the cells with a medium comprising at least two of the agents, folate, vitamin E, and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR).

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the medium contains folate, vitamin E, and ALCAR.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the cells are neuronal cells.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the cells are grown in medium without folate.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein the cells are SH-SY-5Y cells or cortical neurons.

13. A method for treating a neurodegenerative disorder in a mammal, the method comprising administering to the mammal an amount of a pharmaceutical formulation effective to reduce the effects of neurodegeneration, wherein the pharmaceutical formulation comprises at least two of the agents, 3-deaza-adenosine (DZA), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM).

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the pharmaceutical formulation comprises DZA, NAC, and SAM.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the mammal suffers from a neurodegenerative disorder selected from the group consisting of Alzheimer'"'"'s disease, Parkinson'"'"'s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the mammal is a human.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein a level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is reduced in the mammal compared to a reference.

18. A composition useful for treating neurodegenerative disorders comprising at least two of the agents, 3-deaza-adenosine (DZA), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM).

19. The composition of claim 18, wherein the composition comprises DZA, NAC, and SAM.

20. A method for culturing cells, the method comprising contacting the cells with a medium comprising at least two of the agents, 3-deaza-adenosine (DZA), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM).

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the medium comprises DZA, NAC, and SAM.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the cells are neuronal cells.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the cells are grown in medium without folate.

24. The method of claim 20, wherein the cells are SH-SY-5Y cells or cortical neurons.

25. A method of treating a subject having a neurodegenerative disorder, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutic amount of a formulation that decreases homocysteine expression or activity.
