Abstract

The present invention relates to orthopedic implants made from a mesh material. The mesh material can be treated in order to promote bone growth, to provide antibiotics, or to provide other beneficial treatment. Specific applications for the implants include, for example, a prosthetic ligament, a tension band, an interbody device, or a fixation device that extends across one or more joints or fractures.

51. An orthopedic implant comprising:

a bone fixating prosthesis comprising an interconnecting network of metallic fibers that is deformable to conform to a selected bone structure;

one or more reinforcing elements secured to said network of metallic fibers;

one or more bone fasteners extending through the network or one of the reinforcing elements; and

an osteogenic material impregnating at least a portion of the interconnecting network of fibers, wherein said implant is adapted for promoting fusion between adjacent bone structures.

52. The implant of claim 51 wherein the interconnecting network of fibers comprises a deformable sheet or fabric-like material.

53. The implant of claim 51 adapted to secure to at least two adjacent vertebral bodies to promote spinal fixation.

54. The implant of claim 51 adapted to be inserted into a prepared disc space to promote spinal fusion.

55. The implant of claim 51 wherein the bone fixating prosthesis defines a body having an internal cavity.

56. The implant of claim 51 wherein the reinforcing element comprises a reinforcing band bounding the interconnected network of metallic fibers.

57. The implant of claim 51 wherein the reinforcing elements are formed of a material selected from the group consisting of:

stainless steel, cobalt-chrome alloy, titanium, titanium alloy, or nickel-titanium shape memory alloys, biocompatible polymeric materials, nylon fibers, carbon fibers, glass fibers, collagen fibers, ceramic fibers, polyethylene fibers, poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyglycolides, polylactides, and combinations thereof.

58. The implant of claim 51 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group consisting of:

stainless steel, cobalt chrome alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, and nickel titanium alloys.

67. The implant of claim 57 wherein the network of fibers is provided as a planar sheet.

68. The implant of claim 67 wherein one of the reinforcing elements comprise a reinforcing band bounding the network of fibers.

69. The implant of claim 68 wherein one of the reinforcing elements is provided as a spar extending across at least a portion of the network of fibers.

70. The implant of claim 58 wherein the reinforcing elements are provided as two or more spars that extend across at least a portion of the network of fibers.

59. An orthopedic implant comprising:

a network composed of a plurality of flexible fibers,

two or more reinforcing elements secured to said fibers, said reinforcing elements formed of a bendable material to conform the network to a selected bone structure;

one or more bone fasteners extending through the network or through the two or more reinforcing elements; and

an osteogenic material impregnating at least a portion of the network.

60. The implant of claim 59 wherein the reinforcing elements are formed of a material selected from the group consisting of:

stainless steel, cobalt-chrome alloy, titanium, titanium alloy, or nickel-titanium shape memory alloys, biocompatible polymeric materials, nylon fibers, carbon fibers, glass fibers, collagen fibers, ceramic fibers, polyethylene fibers, poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyglycolides, polylactides, and combinations thereof.

61. The implant of claim 59 wherein said network comprises a first set of fibers interwoven or bonded to a second set of fibers.

62. The implant of claim 59 configured to secure to at least two adjacent vertebral bodies to promote spinal fixation.

63. The implant of claim 59 wherein the reinforcing elements comprise a reinforcing band bounding the network of fibers.

64. The implant of claim 59 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group consisting of:

biocompatible polymeric materials, nylon fibers, carbon fibers, glass fibers, collagen fibers, ceramic fibers, polyethylene fibers, poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyglycolides, polylactides, and combinations thereof.

65. The implant of claim 59 wherein the fibers are composed of a material selected from the group consisting of:

stainless steel, cobalt chrome alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, and nickel titanium alloys.

66. The implant of claim 59 wherein the reinforcing elements are formed of shape memory polymeric or metallic alloy materials.
