Abstract

Provided herein are methods and systems for providing controlled lighting, including methods and systems for providing both white and non-white colored lighting, including color temperature controlled lighting. Such methods and systems include optical facilities for modifying light from a lighting unit, such as an LED-based lighting unit, including variable optical facilities and fixed optical facilities. Also provided are methods and systems for using multi-color lighting units in a variety of commercial applications. Also provided are methods and systems for lighting control, including methods to assist lighting designers and installers to improve the quality of lighting in environments. Also provided are intelligent dimmers, switches, sockets and fixtures, as well as facilities for programming and using them. Also provided are various sensor-feedback applications of lighting technology, including sensor-feedback involving light sensors and forward voltage sensors. Also provided are lighting methods and systems that operate on time-based parameters.

Claims

1. A lighting system, comprising:

a plurality of LEDs selected from a group consisting of red, green, blue, amber, white, orange and UV LEDs;

a controller adapted to control an overall color formed by combined light from the plurality of LEDs; and

a variable optical facility adapted to modify the combined light.

2. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the lighting system is adapted to permit the variable optical facility to be varied in response to a user input.

3. The lighting system of claim 2, further comprising a user interface adapted to receive the user input.

4. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to mechanical activity.

5. The lighting system of claim 4, further comprising a piezoelectric component configured and arranged to provide the mechanical activity.

6. The lighting system of claim 4, further comprising an electric motor component configured and arranged to provide the mechanical activity.

7. The lighting system of claim 4, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be deformed by the mechanical activity such that at least a portion of the combined light is altered.

8. The lighting system of claim 7, wherein substantially all of the combined light is altered.

9. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to electrical activity.

10. The lighting system of claim 9, wherein the variable optical facility is comprised of a MEMS device.

11. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to a preprogrammed input.

12. The lighting system of claim 11, wherein the lighting system is configured such that the preprogrammed input is provided to the variable optical facility by the controller.

13. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the lighting system is coupled to a network.

14. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to a network command.

15. The lighting system of claim 1, further comprising a sensor coupled to the variable optical facility.

16. The lighting system of claim 15, wherein the lighting system is configured such that the variable optical facility is varied in response to an output of the sensor.

17. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the sensor is configured and arranged such that the output of the sensor is indicative of light from at least one of the plurality of LEDs.

18. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the sensor comprises a temperature sensor.

19. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the sensor comprises an acoustic sensor.

20. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the sensor is adapted to sense at least one of voltage and current.

21. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the sensor comprises a digital data sensor.

22. The lighting system of claim 19, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in coordination with a sound pattern.

23. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in coordination with a video display.

24. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to achieve a substantially continuous variation of the combined light over a selected interval of time.

25. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied to achieve discrete variations of the combined light over a selected interval of time.

26. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is configured to contain a fluid.

27. The lighting system of claim 26, wherein the fluid comprises a compressible fluid.

28. The lighting system of claim 27, wherein the fluid comprises a gas.

29. The lighting system of claim 27, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.

30. The lighting system of claim 26, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.

31. The lighting system of claim 26, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a valve for adding or removing the fluid such that the volume of the variable optical facility may be varied.

32. The lighting system of claim 31, wherein the fluid comprises a gas.

33. The lighting system of claim 31, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.

34. The lighting system of claim 30, wherein the liquid is semi-opaque.

35. The lighting system of claim 30, wherein the liquid includes bubbles arranged to modify the light from the LEDs.

36. The lighting system of claim 26, wherein the fluid is capable of glowing in response to the combined light.

37. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a lens having an adjustable dimension.

38. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises digital mirror.

39. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a movable mirror.

40. The lighting system of claim 39, wherein the movable mirror comprises a rotatable mirror.

41. The lighting system of claim 39, wherein the movable mirror is adapted to be controlled by a galvanometer.

42. The lighting system of claim 39, wherein the movable mirror is adapted to be controlled by a stepper motor.

43. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a grating light valve.

44. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises an acousto-optical component.

45. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a non-imaging optical surface.

46. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be thermally activated.

47. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a device comprising a lens array, and wherein the device is adapted to displace the lens array such that at least a portion of the combined light is varied.

48. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of LEDs are disposed in a circular pattern.

49. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of LEDs are disposed in a linear pattern.

50. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of LEDs comprises at least one LED of a first color and at least one LED of a second color.

51. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a reflective material.

52. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a refractive material.

53. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a translucent material.

54. The lighting system of claim 53, wherein the variable optical facility contains a fluid.

55. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a diffractive component.

56. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a refractive component.

57. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a phosphorescent material.

58. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a fluorescent material.
