Abstract

A method, system, and computer program for transforming a first document into a second document, whereby the second document is configured for use at an electronic device. The invention receives interface information about the electronic device. A content rules selector is configured to select content rules for modifying content in the first document. A presentation rules selector is configured to select presentation rules for presenting the content from the first document. A transformation generator is configured to combine the content rules and presentation rules to form transformation instructions for transforming the first document into the second document.

Claims

1. A method for transforming a first document into a second document, the second document configured for use at an electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving interface information about the electronic device;

selecting content rules for modifying content in the first document according to the interface information;

selecting presentation rules for presenting the content from the first document according to the interface information; and

combining the content rules and presentation rules to form transformation instructions for transforming the first document into the second document.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating the content rules according to the interface information; and

generating the presentation rules according to the interface information.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a document schema for the first markup document and wherein selecting the content rules includes electing content from the first markup document according the document schema.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the transformation instructions in a transformation repository for reuse.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing the content rules in a content rules repository for reuse; and

storing the presentation rules in a presentation rules repository for reuse.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising transforming the first markup document into the second document using the transformation instructions.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting the second document to the electronic device.

8. A system for transforming a first document into a second document, the second document configured for use at an electronic device, the system comprising:

means for receiving interface information about the electronic device;

means for selecting content rules for modifying content in the first document according to the interface information;

means for selecting presentation rules for presenting the content from the first document according to the interface information; and

means for combining the content rules and presentation rules to form transformation instructions for transforming the first document into the second document.

9. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

means for generating the content rules according to the interface information; and

means for generating the presentation rules according to the interface information.

10. A system for transforming a first set of markup documents into a second set of markup documents, the second set of markup documents configured for use at an electronic device, the system comprising:

a content rules selector configured to select a set of content rules, the content rules are configured to modify content in the first set of markup documents according to the interface information;

a presentation rules selector configured to select a set of presentation rules, the presentation rules are configured to modify presentation directives in the first set of markup documents according to the interface information; and

a transformation generator configured to combine the set of content rules and the set of presentation rules to form transformation instructions for transforming the first set of markup documents into the second set of markup documents.

11. The system of claim 10, further comprising a repository of transformation instructions configured to store the transformation instructions produced by the transformation generator.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the content rules selector is coupled to device information about the electronic device.

13. The system of claim 10, further comprising a schema parser coupled to the content rules selector and configured to receive document validating instructions.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the transformation instructions are embodied as an extensible Style Language Transformations (XSLT) style sheet.

15. A computer program product embodied in a tangible media comprising:

computer readable program codes coupled to the tangible media for transforming a first document into a second document, the second document configured for use at an electronic device, the computer readable program codes configured to cause the program to;

receive interface information about the electronic device;

select content rules for modifying content in the first document according to the interface information;

select presentation rules for presenting the content from the first document according to the interface information; and

combine the content rules and presentation rules to form transformation instructions for transforming the first document into the second document.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program codes configured to cause the program to:

generate the content rules according to the interface information; and

generate the presentation rules according to the interface information.

The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause the program to receive a document schema for the first markup document and wherein the computer readable program code configured to cause the program to select the content rules includes computer readable program code configured to cause the program to elect content from the first markup document according the document schema.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause the program to store the transformation instructions in a transformation repository for reuse.

19. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program codes configured to cause the program to:

store the content rules in a content rules repository for reuse; and

store the presentation rules in a presentation rules repository for reuse.

20. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause the program to transform the first markup document into the second document using the transformation instructions.

21. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising computer readable program code configured to cause the program to transmit the second document to the electronic device.
