Abstract

Multiple key ranges are correlated with multiple data storage areas provided in memory. In storing data in a database, the data is stored in the data storage area correlated with the key range containing the data. When the addition of a data storage area as mentioned above is needed, a given volume of data is moved from the multiple data storages to the newly added data storage area and the key ranges for the moved data are correlated with the data storage areas.

Claims

1. A method for managing database storage area, comprising the steps of:

determining a partitioning method of a first bucket map table including a plurality of buckets based on a designation of a data partitioning storing definition;

corresponding buckets defined in a second bucket map table, in which data storage areas are updated from said first bucket map table, to buckets defined in said first bucket map table based on said partitioning method of said first bucket map table; and

corresponding buckets defined in said second bucket map table to data storage areas based on a partitioning method of a second bucket map table.

2. A method for managing a database storage area, comprising the steps of:

updating correspondence of buckets defined in a second bucket map table, in which data storage areas are updated from a first bucket map table, to buckets defined in said first bucket map table based on a designation of a data redistribution process;

designating data storage means according to buckets of which correspondence of buckets defined in a second bucket map table to buckets defined in said first bucket map table is updated; and

corresponding said designated data storage areas to data storage area newly allocated by said designation of said data redistribution process and moving data between said designated data storage area and said allocated storage area.
