Abstract

A method of encoding and decoding a sequence of frames uses 3-D subband decomposition involving temporal filtering. Under certain conditions, for at least one pixel, the value of said pixel is approximated using one or more pixel values in the same frame.

Claims

1. A method of encoding a sequence of frames using 3-D subband decomposition involving temporal filtering, characterised in that for at least one pixel the value of said pixel is approximated using one or more pixel values in the same frame.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 using three-dimensional (3D) subband decomposition involving temporal and spatial filtering.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said pixel is approximated using one or more neighbouring pixels in the same frame, or a combination thereof.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein vertically or horizontally neighbouring pixels are used as approximations.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein any of a plurality of pixels in the same frame are considered as approximations for said pixel.

6. A method as claimed in claim 3 comprising comparing the difference between the value of said pixel and the approximation and selecting the best approximation.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1 further comprising approximating said pixel value using motion compensation and values in other frames, and comparing the results for approximations using other frames and approximations using the same frame, and selecting the best approximation.

8. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said approximation is used for unconnected pixels (as hereinbefore defined).

9. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the approximated pixel value is used to represent said pixel in either a high pass or a low pass frame in the sub-band decomposition.

10. A method as claimed in claim 9 wherein said representation involves a transform equation, using said approximated pixel value, or said approximated pixel value and said pixel value.

15. A method of decoding a sequence of frames encoded using a method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 14, the method comprising reconstructing a pixel value for a frame using the value of at least one other pixel in the same frame.

16. Coding and/or decoding apparatus adapted to implement a method as claimed in any of claims 1, 14 or 15.

17. Computer program for executing a method as claimed in any of claims 1, 14 or 15 and computer-readable storage medium storing said computer program.

14. A method of encoding a sequence of frames using 3-D subband decomposition involving temporal and spatial filtering, wherein the 3D subband decomposition involves for at least one pixel approximating the value of said pixel using one or more pixel values in the same frame.
