Abstract

Techniques are provided for mapping XML data and metadata from data in relational databases. According to certain embodiments of the invention, a mechanism is provided to allow the user to use a database query to retrieve data form a relational database in the form of XML documents by canonically mapping object relational data to XML data and canonically mapping object relational schemas to XML-Schemas. The mechanism causes the generation of XML-schema information for the XML documents.

Claims

1. A method of providing data, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving, at a database server, a relational database query to retrieve data that resides in a relational database; and

the database server responding to the relational database query by

extracting, from one or more fields within the relational database, content for one or more XML documents;

wherein the content is stored within said one or more fields in the form of one or more data types that are natively supported by the relational database;

wherein the content is not stored within said one or more fields in the form of XML documents within the relational database;

constructing, within the database server, said one or more XML documents based on the content extracted from the one or more fields;

generating one or more XML schemas that describe features of the one or more XML documents, wherein the features comprise one or more of;

types associated with elements of the one or more XML documents; and

constraints that apply to the one or more XML documents; and

providing said one or more XML documents and said one or more XML schemas as a result of the relational database query in the form of one or more XML documents.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein providing said one or more XML schemas comprises providing at least one of the one or more XML schemas inlined within at least one of the one or more XML documents.

12. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 1.

13. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 2.

3. A method of providing data, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving, at a database server, a relational database query to retrieve data that resides in a relational database; and

the database server responding to the relational database query by

extracting, from one or more fields within the relational database, content for one or more XML documents;

wherein the content is stored within said one or more fields in the form of one or more data types that are natively supported by the relational database;

wherein the content is not stored within said one or more fields in the form of XML documents within the relational database;

based on a set of rules, constructing, within the database server, said one or more XML documents using the content extracted from the one or more fields; and

providing said one or more XML documents as a result of the relational database query in the form of one or more XML documents.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises rules for determining how to structure data that is to be contained in the one or more XML documents.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises rules for determining which tag names to use in the one or more XML documents.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises rules for determining how to convert types from a native format to an XML format.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises a rule for converting a complex type to an XML element, wherein constituent subtypes of the complex type are mapped to nested XML subelements.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises a rule for converting a collection type to an XML list.

9. The method of claim 3, wherein the set of rules comprises rules for generating a reference that maps to a corresponding value in an object reference column.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the reference comprises a Database Uniform Resource Indicator reference.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the object reference column comprises a LOB column.

14. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 3.

15. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 4.

16. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 5.

17. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 6.

18. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 7.

19. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 8.

20. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 9.

21. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 10.

22. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 11.
