Abstract

Apparatus and methods of ultra-wideband communication are provided. In one embodiment, an ultra-wideband transmitter comprises a pulser that receives a first data stream comprising high and low signal values. The pulser generates ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the high signal values. A second pulser receives a second data stream and generates ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the second data stream high signal values. A combiner then combines the ultra-wideband pulses and generates a combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses, and a filter filters and shapes the plurality of ultra-wideband pulses prior to transmission. Claims

1. An ultra-wideband transmitter, comprising:

a first pulser configured to receive a first data stream comprising high and low signal values, and to generate a first plurality of ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the first data stream high signal values;

a second pulser configured to receive a second data stream comprising high and low signal values, and to generate a second plurality of ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the second data stream high signal values;

a first combiner communicates with the first and the second pulsers, the first combiner configured to combine the first plurality and the second plurality of ultra-wideband pulses and generate a first combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses; and

a first filter configured to filter and shape the first combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

2. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein the high signal values in the first data stream represent a logic “

1”

3. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein the high signal values in the second data stream represent a logic “

1”

4. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein the first combiner is configured to subtract the first plurality of ultra-wideband pulses from the second plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

5. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, further comprising:

a third pulser configured to receive a third data stream comprising high and low signal values, and to generate a third plurality of ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the high signal values;

a fourth pulser configured to receive a fourth data stream comprising high and low signal values, and to generate a fourth plurality of ultra-wideband pulses corresponding to the high signal values;

a second combiner coupled to the third and fourth pulsers, the second combiner configured to combine the third plurality and the fourth plurality of ultra-wideband pulses and generate a second combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses; and

a second filter configured to filter and shape the second combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

6. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the high signal values in the third data stream represent a logic “

1”

7. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the high signal values in the fourth data stream represent a logic “

8. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the second combiner is configured to subtract the third plurality of ultra-wideband pulses from the fourth plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

9. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, further comprising an adder coupled to the first and the second filters, the adder configured to add the shaped plurality of ultra-wideband pulses generated by the first and second filters.

10. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the plurality of ultra-wideband pulses generated by the first filter is orthogonal to the plurality of ultra-wideband pulses generated by the second filter.

11. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein the first and the second pulsers each comprise an edge detector.

12. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the third and the fourth pulsers each comprise an edge detector.

13. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein the first and the second combiners are passive combiners.

14. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein the third and the fourth combiners are passive combiners.

15. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 1, wherein each of the first combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses comprise a discrete electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 10 picoseconds to about 1 microsecond.

16. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 5, wherein each of the second combined plurality of ultra-wideband pulses comprise a discrete electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 10 picoseconds to about 1 microsecond.

17. The ultra-wideband transmitter of claim 15, wherein each of the discrete electromagnetic pulses has a power that can range between about +30 dBm to about −

60 dBm, as measured at a single frequency.

18. A method of transmitting data in an ultra-wideband communication network, comprising:

generating a plurality of data streams;

generating a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses for each of the plurality of data streams;

combining a number of the plurality of ultra-wideband pulses to generate a plurality of combined ultra-wideband pulses; and

pulse shaping each of the plurality of combined ultra-wideband pulses.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising adding the pulsed shaped plurality of ultra-wideband pulses to generate a single plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

adding the pulsed shaped plurality of ultra-wideband pulses to generate a single plurality of ultra-wideband pulses; and

transmitting the single plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein generating an plurality of ultra-wideband pulses for each of the plurality of data streams comprises ANDing each of the plurality of data streams with a delayed version of the data stream.

22. The method of claim 18, wherein generating a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses for each of the plurality of data streams comprises using a edge detector to generate the plurality of ultra-wideband pulses.

23. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

transmitting the plurality of combined ultra-wideband pulses, wherein each of the ultra-wideband pulses comprises a discrete electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 10 picoseconds to about 1 microsecond.

24. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

transmitting the plurality of combined ultra-wideband pulses, wherein each of the ultra-wideband pulses comprises a discrete electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 10 picoseconds to about 1 microsecond and a power that can range between about +30 dBm to about −

60 dBm, as measured at a single frequency.
