Abstract

A packaging system and method which provides at least one tray or nest, having a number of wells and ribs to position and secure a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device having one or more patient needles which can be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir assembly within the device and upon which a disk, or Belleville spring assembly applies an essentially even and constant pressure to the contents. The device further provides for the release of one or more spring-loaded patient needles a patient'"'"'s skin surface to establish a fluid communication path between the patient needles and the pressurized fluid reservoir contents.

Claims

1. A material handling and packaging system for filling devices for delivering a medicament into the body of a patient utilizing a filling device having a filling nozzle:

a plurality of devices having;

a housing having a bottom surface, a top surface, and a longitudinal axis having a predetermined orientation with respect to at least the bottom surface or the top surface; and

a reservoir disposed within the housing, forming a chamber for containing said medicament, said reservoir having a body opening having a predetermined orientation with respect to the housing longitudinal axis, the body opening adapted for the filling nozzle;

wherein the filling nozzle dispenses the medicament into the chamber; and

a tray having a reference point and a plurality of wells for receiving the plurality of devices, each well having a top aperture, and a bottom aperture, at least one rib adapted for contacting each device wherein the rib of each well is formed to hold each device so that the longitudinal axis of each device is in a predetermined position from the reference point of the tray, and there is a void formed between each individual device.

2. The material handling and packaging system of claim 1, wherein said void is sized such that laminar airflow around each device is maintained.

3. The material handling and packaging system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of ribs is two ribs, formed on opposing sides of the well.

4. The material handling and packaging system of claim 3, wherein the two ribs formed on opposing sides of the well are connected by a third rib across said bottom aperture.

The material handling and packaging system of claim 3, wherein the plurality of ribs is a pair of ribs formed on the same side of the well, each rib in the pair having a corresponding rib formed on an opposing sides of the well, wherein the two ribs formed on opposing sides of the well are connected by a third rib across said bottom aperture.

6. The material handling and packaging system of claim 1, further comprising a sealing bag into which the tray is placed prior to sterilization of the material handling and packaging system.

7. The material handling and packaging system of claim 1, wherein the at least one rib is a crush rib, sized for an interference fit with an outside dimension of the housing of the device.
