Abstract

Methods and systems for diagnosing disorders, including, for example, disordered breathing, involve sensing one or more of a blood chemistry parameter and/or an expired gas parameter, such as expired respiratory gas concentration, blood gas concentration, and blood pH. Diagnosis of the disorder may be performed by a medical device, such as a respiratory therapy device or a cardiac therapy device, based on implantably detected blood gas/pH concentration/level or externally detected expired respiratory gas concentration. Cardiac and respiratory therapies for addressing the disorder may be adjusted based on the detected parameters.

Claims

1. A method of providing disordered breathing therapy, comprising:

providing a respiratory therapy and a cardiac therapy to a patient;

determining one or more parameters influenced by disordered breathing, the one or more parameters comprising at least one of a blood chemistry parameter and an expired respiratory gas parameter; and

adjusting the respiratory therapy and the cardiac therapy based on the one or more parameters.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the blood chemistry parameter comprises blood gas concentration.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the blood chemistry parameter comprises blood pH.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the one or more parameters comprises determining the one or more parameters using one or more implantable sensors.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the one or more parameters comprises determining the one or more parameters using one or more patient-external sensors.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the one or more parameters comprises determining the one or more parameters using one or more implantable sensors and one or more patient-external sensors.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the respiratory therapy comprises adjusting a positive airway pressure therapy.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the cardiac therapy comprises adjusting a cardiac pacing therapy.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the one or more parameters comprises determining one or both of expired oxygen concentration or carbon dioxide gas concentration.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the one or more parameters comprises determining one or more of blood oxygen concentration, blood carbon dioxide concentration, or blood pH.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the respiratory therapy and the cardiac therapy comprises providing a patient-external respiratory therapy and providing a patient-internal cardiac pacing therapy.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring for a change in the one or more parameters.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein monitoring for the change in the one or more parameters comprises detecting a change in the one or more parameters indicative of hypoxemia.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein monitoring for the change in the one or more parameters comprises detecting a change in the one or more parameters indicative of apnea.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein monitoring for the change in the one or more parameters comprises detecting a change in the one or more parameters indicative of hypercapnea or hypocapnea.

16. A medical system, comprising:

a detector system configured to detect one or more parameters influenced by disordered breathing, the one or more parameters comprising at least one of a blood chemistry parameter and an expired respiratory gas parameter;

a therapy delivery system, comprising;

a respiratory therapy delivery device configured to deliver a respiratory therapy to a patient; and

an implantable cardiac therapy delivery device configured to deliver a cardiac therapy to the patient; and

a therapy controller coupled to the therapy delivery system and the detector system, the therapy controller configured to adjust the respiratory and cardiac therapies based on the detected one or more detected parameters.

17. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the respiratory therapy delivery device comprises a positive airway pressure device.

18. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the respiratory therapy delivery device comprises the therapy controller.

19. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the cardiac therapy delivery device comprises the therapy controller.

20. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the therapy controller comprises a component of an advanced patient management system.

21. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the detector system comprises one or more implantable sensors.

22. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the detector system comprises one or more patient-external sensors.

23. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the detector system comprises one or more implantable sensors and one or more patient-external sensors.

24. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the detector system comprises one or more of a blood oxygen sensor, a blood carbon dioxide sensor, or a blood pH sensor.

25. The medical system of claim 16, wherein the detector system comprises an expired respiratory gas concentration sensor.

26. A therapy system, comprising:

means for providing a respiratory therapy and a cardiac therapy to a patient;

means for determining one or more parameters influenced by disordered breathing, the one or more parameters comprising at least one of a blood chemistry parameter and an expired respiratory gas parameter; and

means for adjusting the respiratory therapy and the cardiac therapy based on the one or more parameters.

27. The system of claim 26, further comprising means for monitoring for a change in the one or more parameters.
