Abstract

Apparatus and methods of ultra-wideband communication are provided. In one embodiment, a communication frame is generated and includes a synchronization section, and at least two data sections and at least two preamble sections. An ultra-wideband receiver synchronizes with the ultra-wideband transmitter using the synchronization section, and may also re-synchronize with the transmitter using at least one preamble section. In another embodiment, the length of the data sections are selected to ensure that drift between the ultra-wideband receiver and transmitter will be minimal before re-synchronization. Claims

1. An ultra-wideband communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

generating a communication frame comprising a synchronization section, and at least two data sections and at least two preamble sections;

transmitting the communication frame;

synchronizing a receiver with a transmitter using at least the synchronization section; and

re-synchronizing the receiver with the transmitter using at least one preamble section.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the data contained in the communication frame is intended for one user.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the synchronization section and the preamble section both include a code.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the synchronization and preamble sections comprise the same code.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the code is a perfect sequence.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code followed by an inverse of the code.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the code is selected from a group consisting of:

hierarchical codes, Golay codes, orthogonal Golay codes, m-sequence codes, Kasami codes, and Walsh codes.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein a length of each of the data sections is ⅕

of a length of the communication frame.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein a length of each of the data sections is {fraction (1/8)}th of a length of the communication frame.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse, wherein the ultra-wideband pulse may range in duration from about 10 picoseconds to about one microsecond.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting the communication frame comprises transmitting a plurality of electromagnetic pulses, with each pulse occupying at least 500 megahertz of a radio frequency spectrum.

14. A method of minimizing drift between an ultra-wideband transmitter and an ultra-wideband receiver, the method comprising the steps of:

generating a communication frame comprising a synchronization section, and at least two data sections and at least two preamble sections;

transmitting the communication frame;

synchronizing the ultra-wideband receiver with the ultra-wideband transmitter using at least the synchronization section; and

re-synchronizing the ultra-wideband receiver with the ultra-wideband transmitter using at least one preamble section.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein a length of each of the data sections is selected so that drift between the ultra-wideband transmitter and the ultra-wideband receiver will be minimal before re-synchronization.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

correlating the synchronization section to obtain a peak information that is used by the ultra-wideband receiver to synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of:

correlating at least one preamble section to obtain a peak information that is used by the ultra-wideband receiver to re-synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the data contained in the communication frame is intended for one user.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the synchronization section and the preamble section both include a code.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code followed by an inverse of the code.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the code is selected from a group consisting of:

hierarchical codes, Golay codes, orthogonal Golay codes, m-sequence codes, Kasami codes, and Walsh codes.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein a length of each of the data sections is ⅕

of a length of the communication frame.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein a length of each of the data sections is {fraction (1/8)}th of a length of the communication frame.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse.

26. The method of claim 14, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse, wherein the ultra-wideband pulse may range in duration from about 10 picoseconds to about one microsecond.

27. The method of claim 14, wherein the step of transmitting the communication frame comprises transmitting a plurality of electromagnetic pulses, with each pulse occupying at least 500 megahertz of a radio frequency spectrum.

28. An ultra-wideband communication system, comprising:

a communication frame comprising a synchronization section, and at least two data sections and at least two preamble sections;

an ultra-wideband transmitter structured to transmit the communication frame; and

an ultra-wideband receiver structured to receive the communication frame and to synchronize with the transmitter using at least the synchronization section and re-synchronize with the transmitter using at least one preamble section.

29. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein a length of each of the data sections is chosen to ensure that a drift in the receiver will be minimized before re-synchronization.

30. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, further comprising a correlator configured to correlate the synchronization section and provide peak information that is used by the ultra-wideband receiver to synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter.

31. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, further comprising a correlator configured to correlate at least one preamble section and provide peak information that can be used by the ultra-wideband receiver to re-synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter.

32. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, further comprising a plurality of correlators each configured to correlate the synchronization section and provide peak information that is used by the ultra-wideband receiver to synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter.

33. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 32, further comprising a combiner communicating with the plurality of correlators, the combiner configured to combine the output of the correlators.

34. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 32, wherein the correlators define a correlation window that enables the ultra-wideband receiver to synchronize with the ultra-wideband transmitter in a multipath environment.

35. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 34, wherein a correlation window is longer than a delay spread of the multipath environment.

36. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 35, wherein the correlation window is twice the length of the delay spread.

37. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 32, wherein the plurality of correlators is used to determine a delay spread in a multipath environment.

38. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 32, wherein the plurality of correlators is used to determine a location of at least one peak associated with each preamble section.

39. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein the synchronization section and the preamble section both include a code.

40. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 39, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code.

41. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 39, wherein the synchronization section comprises multiple copies of the code followed by an inverse of the code.

42. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 39, wherein the code is selected from a group consisting of:

hierarchical codes, Golay codes, orthogonal Golay codes, m-sequence codes, Kasami codes, and Walsh codes.

43. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein a length of each of the data sections is ⅕

of a length of the communication frame.

44. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein a length of each of the data sections is {fraction (1/8)}th of a length of the communication frame.

45. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse.

46. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein the communication frame comprises a plurality of time bins, with each time bin capable of receiving an ultra-wideband pulse, wherein the ultra-wideband pulse may range in duration from about 10 picoseconds to about one microsecond.

47. The ultra-wideband communication system of claim 28, wherein the step of transmitting the communication frame comprises transmitting a plurality of electromagnetic pulses, with each pulse occupying at least 500 megahertz of a radio frequency spectrum.
