1. A device for the controlled exposure or release of contents stored in hermetically sealed reservoirs comprising:
- a primary substrate having a front side and a back side, and including one or more hermetic sealing materials;
a plurality of reservoirs in the primary substrate positioned between the front side and the back side;
reservoir contents, which comprise chemical molecules or a secondary device, located inside the reservoirs;
a hermetic sealing substrate having a surface composed of one or more hermetic sealing materials; and
a hermetic seal formed between and joining the primary substrate and the hermetic sealing substrate, wherein the hermetic seal independently seals the reservoirs.

Abstract
Devices are provided for the controlled exposure or release of contents stored in hermetically sealed reservoirs. The devices comprise a primary substrate having a front side and a back side, and including one or more hermetic sealing materials; a plurality of reservoirs in the primary substrate positioned between the front side and the back side; reservoir contents, which comprise chemical molecules (such as drugs) or a secondary device (such as a glucose sensor), located inside the reservoirs; a hermetic sealing substrate having a surface composed of one or more hermetic sealing materials; and a hermetic seal formed between and joining the primary substrate and the hermetic sealing substrate, wherein the hermetic seal independently seals the reservoirs.

38. A device for storage and controlled exposure or release of reservoir contents comprising:

a microchip device having (i) a substrate including one or more hermetic sealing materials, (ii) a plurality of reservoirs containing contents for release or exposure, (iii) reservoir caps over the reservoir contents, and (iv) means for selectively disintegrating the reservoir caps, wherein the device has at least one surface comprising one or more hermetic sealing materials;
a hermetic packaging structure encasing at least a portion of the microchip device other than the reservoir caps and having a surface composed of one or more hermetic sealing materials; and

50. An implantable medical device comprising:

a primary substrate having a front side and a back side, and including one or more hermetic sealing materials;
a plurality of reservoirs in the primary substrate positioned between the front side and the back side;
a plurality of biosensors disposed in the reservoirs;
a plurality of discrete reservoir caps sealing the reservoirs at the front side of the primary substrate;
a hermetic sealing substrate having a surface composed of one or more hermetic sealing materials;
a hermetic seal formed between and joining the primary substrate and the hermetic sealing substrate, wherein the hermetic seal independently seals the reservoirs at the back side of the primary substrate; and
means for selectively disintegrating the reservoir caps to expose the biosensors to the environment outside of the reservoirs. - View Dependent Claims (51, 52, 53)
