Abstract

An access switch includes a cable modem termination system with a gate manager executing thereon and a route server, in communication with the cable modem termination system, that includes a common open policy service client executing on the route server. The switch further includes a network interface module, in communication with the cable modem termination system and the route server, that, when the network interface module is coupled to a network, communicates common open policy service messages between the common open policy service client and a call management server included in the network. When a first common open policy service message that includes a gate command is received by the common open policy service client, the common open policy service client sends a second message derived from the first common open policy service message to the gate manager. The gate manager receives the second message and processes the gate command.

Claims

1. An access switch comprising:

at least one cable modem termination system, wherein the cable modem termination system, when coupled to a hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network, is in communication with a media terminal adapter, wherein the cable modem termination system includes a gate manager executing thereon;

a route server, in communication with the cable modem termination system, that includes a common open policy service client executing on the route server;

a network interface module, in communication with the cable modem termination system and the route server, that, when the network interface module is coupled to a network, communicates common open policy service messages between the common open policy service client and a call management server included in the network;

wherein when a first common open policy service message that includes a gate command is received by the common open policy service client, the common open policy service client sends a second message derived from the first common open policy service message to the gate manager; and

wherein the gate manager receives the second message and processes the gate command.

2. The access switch of claim 1, wherein the network includes a managed internet protocol network.

3. The access switch of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of cable modem termination systems, each cable modem termination system having a gate manager executing thereon.

4. The access switch of claim 3, wherein each gate manager generates a gate identifier that is associated with at least one gate, wherein the gate identifier includes a first portion that identifies a slot in which the cable modem termination system on which that gate manager executes is inserted.

5. The access switch of claim 4, wherein the common open policy service client identifies which gate manager to send the second message to based on the first portion of the gate identifier.

6. The access switch of claim 4, wherein the gate identifier includes a second portion that is sequentially generated.

7. The access switch of claim 6, wherein the second portion of the gate identifier is used to reference a data structure in which information about the gate associated with the gate identifier is stored.

8. The access switch of claim 1, further comprising a second route server, wherein the second route server has a common open policy server client executing thereon, wherein the second route server serves as a backup to the route server.

9. The access switch of claim 1, wherein the cable modem termination system includes a data over cable service interface specification subsystem that manages flows associated with gates managed by the gate manager.

10. The access switch of claim 9, wherein the data over cable service interface specification subsystem includes a quality of service policy manager that performs admission control for flows associated with gates managed by the gate manager.

11. A route server for use in an access switch that includes at least one cable modem termination system and a network interface module for coupling the route server and the cable modem termination system to a network, wherein the cable modem termination system includes a gate manager executing thereon, the route server comprising:

a route look-up subsystem; and

a common open policy service client, wherein when the common open policy service client receives, from a call management server included in the network, a common open policy service message that includes a gate command, the common open policy service client sends a second message derived from the common open policy service message to the gate manager, wherein the gate manager process the gate command.

12. The route server of claim 11, wherein the network includes a managed internet protocol network.

13. The route server of claim 11, wherein when the access switch includes a plurality of cable modem termination systems, each of which includes a gate manager executing thereon, the common open policy service client identifies which gate manager to send the second message to based on slot identifier information included in a gate identifier included in the common open policy service message.

14. The route server of claim 13, wherein when the common open policy service message does not include a gate identifier, the common open policy service client has the route look-up subsystem perform a route look-up using a subscriber identifier included in the common open policy service message to identify which gate manager to send the second message to.

15. The route server of claim 11, wherein the common open policy service client establishes a transport control protocol connection with the call management server.

16. A method of processing common open policy service messages, the method comprising:

receiving a common open policy service message from a call management server, wherein the common open policy service message includes a gate command;

assembling a second message that includes the gate command, wherein the second message is derived from the common open policy service message;

sending the second message to a gate manager executing on a cable modem termination system; and

when a valid response message is received from the gate manager, assembling an acknowledgement common open policy service message derived from the valid response message and sending the acknowledgement common open policy service message to the call management server.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein sending the second message to the gate manager executing on the cable modem termination system includes identifying which of a plurality of cable modem termination systems to send the second message to using a slot identifier included in a gate identifier included in the common open policy service message.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein sending the second message to the gate manager executing on the cable modem termination system includes, when the common open policy service message does not include a gate identifier, performing a route look-up using a subscriber identifier included in the common open policy service message to identify which of the plurality of cable modem termination systems to send the second message to.

19. The method of claim 16, further comprising establishing a transport control protocol connection with the call management server.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising communicating with the call management server over the transport control protocol connection without using handshake messages.

21. A route server for use in an access switch that includes at least one cable modem termination system and a network interface module for coupling the route server and the cable modem termination system to a network, wherein the cable modem termination system includes a gate manager executing thereon, the route server comprising:

a route look-up subsystem; and

a common open policy service client that;

receives a common open policy service message from the call management server, wherein the common open policy service message includes a gate command;

assembles a second message that includes the gate command, wherein the second message is derived from the common open policy service message;

sends the second message to the gate manager; and

when a valid response message is received from the gate manager, assembles an acknowledgement common open policy service message derived from the valid response message and sends the acknowledgement common open policy service message to the call management server.

22. The route server of claim 21, wherein the common the open policy service client identifies which of a plurality of cable modem termination systems to send the second message to using a slot identifier included in a gate identifier included in the common open policy service message.

23. The route server of claim 22, wherein when the common open policy service message does not include a gate identifier, the route look-up subsystem performs a route look-up using a subscriber identifier included in the common open policy service message to identify which of the plurality of cable modem termination systems the common open policy service client is to send the second message to.

24. The route server of claim 21, wherein the common the open policy service client establishes a transport control protocol connection with the call management server.

25. The route server of claim 21, wherein the common the open policy service client communicates with the call management server over the transport control protocol connection without using handshake messages.

26. A cable modem termination system for use in an access switch that includes a route server on which a common open policy service client executes and a network interface module for coupling the route server and the cable modem termination system to a network, the cable modem termination system comprising:

a data over cable service interface specification subsystem that, when the cable modem termination system is coupled to a hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network, communicates with at least one cable modem over the hybrid-fiber coaxial cable network, and that, when the network module is coupled the managed internet protocol network, communicates with the managed internet protocol network via the network module, wherein the data over cable service interface specification subsystem includes;

a quality-of-service policy manager subsystem;

a classifier subsystem; and

a protocol header suppression subsystem; and

a gate manager that receives a message from the common open-policy service client, wherein the message includes a gate command derived from a common open policy service message received by the common open policy service client, wherein the gate manager processes the gate command.

27. The cable modem termination system of claim 26, wherein the network includes a managed internet protocol network.

28. The cable modem termination system of claim 26, wherein the gate manager generates a gate identifier that is associated with at least one gate, wherein the gate identifier includes a first portion that identifies a slot in which the cable modem termination system is inserted.

29. The cable modem termination system of claim 28, wherein the gate identifier includes a second portion that is sequentially generated.

30. The cable modem termination system of claim 28, wherein the second portion of the gate identifier is used to reference a data structure in which information about the gate associated with the gate identifier is stored.

31. The cable modem termination system of claim 26, wherein the data over cable service interface specification subsystem manages flows associated with gates managed by the gate manager.
