Abstract

Method and apparatus for limiting absorption of food products in specific parts of the digestive system is presented. A gastrointestinal implant device is anchored in the stomach and extends beyond the ligament of Treitz. All food exiting the stomach is funneled through the device. The gastrointestinal device includes an anchor for anchoring the device to the stomach and a flexible sleeve to limit absorption of nutrients in the duodenum. The anchor is collapsible for endoscopic delivery and removal.

Claims

1. A removal device for removing a gastrointestinal implant device from the body comprising:

an outer sheath adapted to store a proximal portion of the gastrointestinal implant device;

an inner sheath within the outer sheath; and

a plurality of fingers extending from the distal end of the inner sheath, the fingers adapted for collapsing the proximal end of the gastrointestinal implant device to allow the proximal end of the device to be drawn into the outer sheath.

2. The removal device of claim 1, wherein the fingers are adapted to collapse the implant device by engaging the stent and pulling radially inward on the proximal end of the implant device.

3. The removal device of claim 2, wherein the fingers are adapted to pull radially inward as the inner sheath is moved over the fingers.

4. The removal device of claim 1, wherein the gastrointestinal implant device is adapted to be anchored in the digestive system prior to removal.

5. The removal device of claim 1, wherein the gastrointestinal implant device is adapted to be anchored in the stomach prior to removal.

6. The removal device of claim 1, wherein the gastrointestinal implant device is adapted to be anchored distal to the pylorus prior to removal.

7. The removal device of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the gastrointestinal implant device is adapted to be anchored within the pyloric orifice prior to removal.

8. The removal device of claim 1, wherein the gastrointestinal implant device comprises a stent coupled to the proximal portion of an elongated tube.

9. The removal device of claim 1, further comprising a gastrointestinal implant device, the implant device comprising a sleeve anchor coupled to the proximal end of a sleeve.

10. A method for removing an implant device from a natural body lumen comprising:

inserting at least a portion of a removal device into the natural body lumen of a patient, the removal device comprising an outer sheath configured for storing a proximal portion of the implant device and an inner sheath within the outer sheath, the inner sheath including a plurality of fingers extending from the distal end of the inner sheath;

engaging the proximal end of the implant device using the plurality of extended fingers;

collapsing the plurality of fingers with the inner sheath to radially collapse the proximal end of the implant device;

drawing at least a proximal portion of the implant device into the outer sheath.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein collapsing the plurality of fingers comprises advancing the inner sheath over the plurality of fingers.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the implant device is adapted to be anchored distal to the pylorus prior to removal.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein at least a portion of the gastrointestinal implant device is adapted to be anchored within the pyloric orifice prior to removal.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the implant device comprises a sleeve anchor coupled to the proximal portion of an elongated tube, the engaging step comprising grasping the sleeve anchor using the plurality of extended fingers.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of inserting at least a portion of the removal device comprises an endoscopic procedure.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising withdrawing from the body the outer sheath with the engaged gastrointestinal implant device.

17. A removal device comprising:

means for storing a proximal portion of the gastrointestinal implant device, the proximal portion of the gastrointestinal implant device including a sleeve anchor adapted to anchor the device;

means for engaging the proximal end of the sleeve anchor;

means for collapsing the proximal end of the sleeve anchor; and

means for drawing at least a proximal portion of the sleeve anchor into the storing means.
