Abstract

Improved apparatus and methods for utilizing holographic waveforms for a variety of purposes including communication. In one exemplary embodiment, the holographic waveforms are wideband in nature and transmitted over an RF bearer medium to provide, inter alia, highly covert and robust communications. The wideband signal is generated without resort to a carrier (and any associated upconversion in the transmitter or downconversion in the receiver). In one embodiment, the radiated signals are of sufficiently low power such that the transmitter does not require a power amplifier.

Claims

1. Wideband radio frequency communications apparatus adapted to holographically encode baseband data and transmit said encoded data without use of a carrier.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, comprising a digital processor and a conversion apparatus, said conversion apparatus being adapted to convert signals from the digital domain to the analog domain.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said apparatus transmits over a frequency band wider than 1 GHz .

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said holographic encoding comprises phase-coding to produce first phase-coded data and subsequently performing at least one mathematical transform on said first phase-coded data.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising a power amplifier.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said baseband data comprises a plurality of source data elements, and said apparatus if further configured to:

implement at least two independent and parallel steps of systematic convolutional coding, each of said coding steps taking account of all of said source data elements and provide parallel outputs of distinct series of coded data elements;

and temporally interleave said source data elements to modify the order in which said source data elements are taken into account for at least one of said coding steps.

7. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said mathematical transform comprises a Fourier transform.

8. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said mathematical transform comprises a Hadamard transform.

9. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said mathematical transform comprises a number theoretic transform.

10. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein further comprising encoding said transformed phase-coded data using a second phase code.

11. Radio frequency communications apparatus adapted to receive and decode holographically encoded signals without downconverting from a carrier frequency.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said decoding comprises performing at least one mathematical inverse transform on said holographically encoded signals, and thereafter decoding use a first phase code to produce baseband data.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, comprising performing at least a second decoding on said holographically encoded signals using a second phase code.

14. Wideband communications apparatus adapted to transmit signals without a power amplifier, comprising:

processor apparatus adapted to process baseband data;

data conversion apparatus operatively coupled to said processor; and

an antenna operatively coupled to said conversion apparatus and adapted to radiate signals;

wherein said processor apparatus is configured to, prior to transmission over said antenna;

phase-code said baseband data according to a first phase code; and

transform said phase-coded data to produce transformed phase-coded data.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said signals are radiated in a frequency band spanning at least one (1) GHz.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said conversion apparatus comprises a D/A converter (DAC).

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said processor apparatus comprises a reconfigurable multi-core array of digital processors.

18. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said transforming of said phase-coded data comprises a Fourier transform operation, and said processor apparatus comprises at least one extension instruction specifically adapted to perform at least a portion of said Fourier transform operation.

19. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said phase-coding comprises applying a substantially randomized code having both real and imaginary values.

20. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said baseband data is encoded using a convolutional error correction code.

21. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said radiated signals comprise a substantially noise-like waveform in both the time and frequency domains.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said radiated signals have both a real and imaginary component.
