Abstract

The present invention provides a device and kit and method of use thereof for wound treatment of a subject. The device may include an electrically operated patch or other means of delivery of electrical current and a connected moist surface. Optionally, the device may include a composition comprising an active substance useful in wound treatment. Preferably, the means of delivery of electrical current includes a power source and a plurality of electrodes disposed in a suitable conformation on a base substrate layer, which readily facilitates electrical contact with the body area of the subject. Preferably, the kit may include a means of delivery of electrical current and a moist surface provided as separate components. The present invention further provides a thin and flexible device for galvanic treatment to treat wounds with electrical stimulation. Preferably, the device is made using a printing technique.

Claims

1. A device for treatment of a wound, comprising:

at least one electrically powered patch comprising;

at least one first electrode;

at least one power source having a first and second terminal, the first terminal coupled to the first electrode;

at least one second electrode coupled to the second terminal of the power source; and

a base member substrate supporting the first electrode, the second electrode, and the power source; and

at least one moist surface connected to or integrally formed with the at least one electrically powered patch.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the first electrode, the power source, and the second electrode are printed on the base member.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface is printed on the electrically powered patch.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the patch is an iontophoretic patch.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the base member maintains a spaced-relation defining a gap between the first and second electrodes.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source is an electrochemical cell.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source is thin and flexible.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source has a thickness of up to 4 mm.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source has a thickness of up to 2 mm.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source has a thickness of up to 1 mm.

11. The device of claim 6, wherein the power source is an open liquid state electrochemical cell.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the power source is an electrochemical cell comprising:

a first layer of insoluble negative pole;

a second layer of insoluble positive pole; and

a third layer of aqueous electrolyte being disposed between the first and second layers.

13. The device of claim 12, further comprising at least one of:

a deliquescent material for keeping the open cell wet at all times;

an electroactive soluble material for obtaining a predetermined ionic conductivity; and

a water-soluble polymer for obtaining a required viscosity for adhering the first and second layers to the third layer.

The device of claim 1 for treating a wound selected from the at least one of the group consisting of superficial injuries, cuts, abrasions, blisters, lacerations, superficial burns, pressure sores, road rash, carpet burns, scrapes, sun burns, friction burns, pressure ulcers, stasis ulcers, diabetic ulcers, foot ulcers, post-surgical wounds, scarring, trauma wounds and a combination thereof.

The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface has a wound healing effect selected from the group consisting of preventing dehydration of wound surface, rehydrating wound bed, softening necrotic tissue, moisturizing effect, reduction of wound pain, cooling effect, absorption of fluid, protection from extraneous materials and microorganisms and a combination thereof.

The device of claim 1, wherein the electrically powered patch is configured to readily facilitate a wound healing effect selected from at least one of the group consisting of accelerated cell regeneration, tissue repair, accelerated cutaneous barrier recovery, improved blood circulation, improved respiration, scar reduction, generating motor and sensory stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation, pain control and a combination thereof.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface is a moist conductive layer.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface has a function selected from at least one of the group consisting of a surface for providing wound healing, a conductive interface, a drug reservoir and a combination thereof.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface is a hydrogel.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface is selected from the group

consisting of gel, lotion, liquid, cream, ointment and a combination thereof.

21. The device of claim 1, wherein the device provides a synergistic effect of the moist surface and electrical current on wound healing.

22. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one moist surface is pre-applied to at least one of the group consisting of, both electrodes, one electrode, power source, interface area between electrodes, central area above power source and a combination thereof.

23. The device of claim 1, further comprising a substrate layer attached to at least one of the electrodes, configured to accommodate a formulation comprising an active agent and a conductive fluid.

24. The device of claim 1, further comprising an active agent effective in wound treatment.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the active agent is selected from at least one of the group consisting of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, topical anesthetics, antimicrobial and anti fungal agents, oxidizing agents, zinc, silver, active agents for tissue growth, growth factors, anti viral agents, herbal and natural remedies and a combination thereof.

26. The device of claim 1, wherein the moist surface further comprises at least one active agent effective in wound treatment.

27. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is thin and flexible.

28. The device of claim 1, further comprising attachment means.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein the attachment means is adhesive.

The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first electrode and the at least one second electrode are made from a material selected from the group consisting of silver, silver chloride, carbon, graphite, zinc, copper, manganese dioxide, aluminum, platinum, stainless steel, gold, titanium, and a combination thereof.

31. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first electrode and the at least one second electrode are made from a material which is active in wound healing.

32. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first electrode is a zinc electrode.

33. The device of claim 32, wherein zinc ions are generated in-situ.

34. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one first electrode and said at least one second electrode are circular electrodes configured in a concentric arrangement wherein at least one electrode is an inner circular electrode and at least one second electrode is a periphery circular electrode.

35. The device of claim 34, wherein the at least one moist surface is pre-applied to the peripheral electrode and a substrate for accommodating an active substance is disposed on the inner electrode.

36. The device of claim 35, wherein the periphery electrode is an anode active electrode and wherein the inner electrode is a cathode.

37. The device of claim 36, wherein the cathode is configured to remove fluid from the wound and the fluid is accommodated in the absorbing substrate.

39. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first electrode and the at least one second electrode are circular and are in a bilateral arrangement.

40. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is linear.

41. The device of claim 5, further comprising a conductive medium in the interface gap between the first electrode and second electrode.

42. The device of claim 41, wherein the device is configured to facilitate surface treatment.

43. The device of claim 41, wherein the device is configured to facilitate a combination of surface treatment and iontophoretic treatment.

44. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one first electrode and the at least one second electrode are in a labyrinth type arrangement.

45. The device of claim 41, wherein the at least one first electrode and the at least one second electrode are in a labyrinth type arrangement.

46. The device of claim 45, wherein the at least one first electrode or the at least one second electrode is zinc.

47. The device of claim 1, wherein the power source provides current selected from the group consisting of direct current (galvanic current), alternating current, pulsed current and a combination thereof.

48. The device of claim 47, wherein current type is chosen according to the nature and severity of the injury and the involvement of pain in the wound condition.

49. The device of claim 47, wherein the voltage or current are fixed.

50. The device of claim 47, wherein the voltage or current can be adjusted by a user.

51. The device of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of electrically operated patches disposed on a single substrate base layer.

52. The device of claim 51, wherein the device may be used to treat a plurality of wounds or areas on a wound.

59. A method of wound treatment, comprising:

selecting a body area with a wound which treatment of is desired;

contacting the device and attached moist surface of claim 1 with the affected body area;

stimulating electrically the wound area and treating the wound area with the moist surface; and

removing the device from the wound area.

38. The device of claim wherein 1, at least one moist substance is pre-applied to the at least one first and the at least one second electrode.

53. A thin and flexible device for treatment of a wound, comprising:

at least one electrically powered patch comprising;

at least one first electrode;

at least one power source having a first and second terminal, the first terminal coupled to the first electrode;

at least one second electrode coupled to the second terminal of the power source;

a base member supporting the first electrode, the second electrode, and the power source; and

a conductive interface for conducting current from patch to wound.

54. A fully printed, thin and flexible device for treatment of a wound, comprising:

at least one electrically powered patch comprising;

at least one first electrode;

at least one power source having a first and second terminal, the first terminal coupled to the first electrode;

at least one second electrode coupled to the second terminal of the power source; and

a base member supporting the first electrode, the second electrode, and the power source, wherein the first electrode, the second electrode and the power source are printed onto the base member.

55. A thin and flexible device for treatment of a wound, comprising:

at least one electrically powered patch comprising;

at least one active zinc electrode;

at least one power source having a first and second terminal, the first terminal coupled to the first electrode;

at least one second electrode coupled to the second terminal of the power source; and

a base member supporting the first electrode, the second electrode, and the power source; and

a conductive medium for providing a conductive interface between the patch and wound, wherein the conductive medium is disposed in the gap between the active zinc electrode and second electrode readily facilitating generation of zinc ions in situ for surface wound treatment and iontophoretic treatment of the wound.

56. A kit for treatment of a wound, comprising:

at least one electrically powered patch comprising;

at least one first electrode;

at least one power source having a first and second terminal, the first terminal coupled to the first electrode;

at least one second electrode coupled to the second terminal of the power source; and

a base member supporting the first electrode, the second electrode, and the power source; and

at least one moist surface.

57. The kit of claim 56, further comprising an active substance, wherein said active substance is effective in wound healing.

58. The kit of claim 56, wherein the moist surface is applied before treatment to at least one of the group selected from one electrode, both electrodes, the power supply, the area above power supply, directly onto wound and surrounding area, interface area between both electrodes and a combination thereof.

60. A method of wound treatment, comprising:

selecting a body area with a wound, which treatment of is desired;

providing a kit for wound treatment of claim 56;

applying the moist surface according to claim 58;

contacting the device and attached moist surface with the affected body area;

stimulating electrically the wound area and treating the wound area with the moist surface; and

removing the device from the wound area.
