Abstract

Apparatus and methods of ultra-wideband (UWB) communication are provided. In one embodiment, an UWB communication system transmits a serial data stream comprising a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses. These UWB pulses are received at a receiver that splits the serial data stream into a plurality of parallel data streams. The phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams is then shifted, and then the plurality of parallel data streams are combined into a combined data stream. Claims

1. An ultra-wideband communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting a serial data stream comprising a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses;

receiving the serial data stream;

splitting the serial data stream into a plurality of parallel data streams;

shifting a phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams;

combining the plurality of parallel data streams into a combined data stream; and

selecting at least one of the plurality of data streams for communication.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the ultra-wideband pulses may range in duration from about 10 picoseconds to about one microsecond.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein each ultra-wideband pulse occupies at least 500 megahertz of a radio frequency spectrum.

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of shifting the phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams comprises employing a plurality of multipliers, with each of the plurality of multipliers configured to multiply each of the plurality of data streams with a phase shifting signal.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

controlling the steps of;

splitting the serial data stream into a plurality of parallel data streams;

shifting a phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams; and

combining the plurality of parallel data streams into a combined data stream;

based on how many communication bands are used for communication.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of encoding the serial data stream to increase a data rate.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the step of encoding the serial data stream comprises adding zeros into the data stream.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein adding zeroes comprises adding two zeroes for every two data bits in the serial data stream.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the zeros are added based on which of a group of communication bands are used for communication.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the combined data stream comprises complex data.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of encoding the complex data into values of 1, 0, and −

1.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of encoding the complex data into a real and an imaginary data streams.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein each of the real and imaginary data streams comprises two data streams, wherein one of the data streams is used to indicate a value of 1, and the other data streams is used to indicate a value of −

1.

14. An ultra-wideband communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting a serial data stream comprising a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses;

receiving the serial data stream;

splitting the serial data stream into a plurality of parallel data streams;

shifting a phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams;

combining the plurality of parallel data streams into a combined data stream, the combined data'"'"'stream comprising complex data; and

encoding the complex data of the combined data stream into values of 1, 0, and −

1.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein each of the ultra-wideband pulses may range in duration from about 10 picoseconds to about one microsecond.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein each ultra-wideband pulse occupies at least 500 megahertz of a radio frequency spectrum.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the complex data is encoded into a real and an imaginary data streams.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein each of the real and imaginary data streams comprises two data streams, wherein one of the data streams is used to indicate a value of 1, and the other data streams is used to indicate a value of −

1.

19. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of encoding the serial data stream to increase a data rate.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the step of encoding the serial data stream comprises adding zeros into the data stream.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein adding zeroes comprises adding two zeroes for every two data bits in the serial data stream.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the zeros are added based on which of a group of communication bands are used for communication.

23. An ultra-wideband communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

means for transmitting a serial data stream comprising a plurality of ultra-wideband pulses;

means for receiving the serial data stream;

means for splitting the serial data stream into a plurality of parallel data streams;

means for shifting a phase of at least one of the plurality of parallel data streams;

means for combining the plurality of parallel data streams into a combined data stream, the combined data stream comprising complex data; and

means for encoding the complex data of the combined data stream into values of 1, 0, and −

1.
