Abstract

The invention provides a biological dressing for treatment of a condition of the skin, mucosa, teeth or other tissue within or proximate to the oral cavity of a subject, the biological dressing comprised of a gum resin, a topically acceptable volatile solvent, and an oral care agent. The gum resin is present in a suitable amount that the composition, when the solvent evaporates, will dry to form a solid coating that sticks to the tissue to which the composition is applied and maintain the oral care agent over a sustained period of time in contact with sites on the tissue exhibiting symptoms of the condition. Methods are provided for treating symptoms of oral condition with such a oral care composition.

Claims

1. An oral care composition comprising:

a) a gum resin;

b) at least one topically acceptable oral care agent other than the gum resin that is effective as a treatment for ameliorating symptoms of a condition of oral tissue; and

c) a topically acceptable volatile solvent for the gum resin and the oral care agent.

2. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the gum resin comprises benzoin.

3. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the topically acceptable volatile solvent comprises ethanol.

4. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the topically acceptable volatile solvent is ethanol and comprises about 60% to 90% of said composition.

5. The composition according to claim 1 wherein the oral care agent is a teeth whitening agent, anti-tartar agent, fluoride ion source, antimicrobial agent, anti-inflammatory agent, nutrient, enzyme, antioxidant, flavoring agent or fragrance.

6. The composition according to claim 5 wherein the teeth whitening agent comprises a peroxide, metal chlorite, perborate, percarbonate, or peroxyacid.

7. The composition according to claim 6, wherein the peroxide comprises hydrogen peroxide, calcium peroxide, or carbamide peroxide.

8. The composition according to claim 5 wherein the anti-tartar agent comprises a pyrophosphate, polyphosphate, or polyphosphonate.

The composition according to claim 5, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-phenol, phthalic acid, substituted monoperthalic acid, magnesium monoperoxy phthalate, chlorhexidine, alexidine, hexetidine, sanguinarine, benzalkonium chloride, salicylanilide, domiphen bromide, cetylpyridinium chloride, tetradecylpyridinium chloride, N-tetradecyl-4-ethylpyridinium chloride, octenidine;

delmopinol, octapinol, piperidino derivatives;

nicin preparations;

zinc/stannous ion agents, augmentin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, metronidazole, thymol, geraniol, carvacrol, citral, hinokitiol, eucalyptol, catechol, methyl salicylate, hydrogen peroxide, or metal salts of chlorite.

10. The composition according to claim 5, wherein the anti-inflammatory agent is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent.

12. The composition according to claim 5, wherein the enzyme comprises a protease, glucanohydrolase, endoglycosidase, amylase, mutanase, lipase, or mucinase.

13. The composition according to claim 5, further comprising an essential oil or flavoring aldehyde, ester, or alcohol.

14. A method of increasing the effectiveness of a treatment for symptoms of an oral condition in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising:

a) contacting a site of tissue of the subject exhibiting symptoms of the oral condition with an oral care composition according to claim 1;

and b) allowing the composition to dry so that it forms a film on the tissue, so that the effectiveness of the treatment for ameliorating the symptoms is increased.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the oral condition is a discoloration of the teeth.

16. The method according to claim 14, wherein the oral condition is halitosis.

17. A method of producing a biological dressing as a treatment for symptoms of an oral condition, the method comprising:

drying an oral care composition according to claim 1 on the tissue of a mammal at a site exhibiting symptoms of the condition so that the composition forms a film on the tissue, whereby a biological dressing is obtained for ameliorating the symptoms.

18. A biological dressing obtained according to the method of claim 17.

19. An oral care kit comprising:

one or more containers holding an oral care composition according to claim 1;

and instructions for use in treating symptoms of a oral condition.

20. The oral care kit according to claim 19, wherein the one or more containers is a delivery system selected from the group consisting of a roll-on applicator, a spray applicator, an aerosol applicator, a sponge tip applicator, and a syringe.

22. The oral care kit of claim 19, wherein the kit is for treating discoloration of teeth.

23. The oral care kit of claim 22, wherein the kit contains multiple applicators for use over a period of time sufficient to affect the discoloration of the teeth.

24. The oral care kit of claim 23, wherein the kit contains at least 2-15 applicators and sufficient oral care agent for 2-15 applications.

11. The composition according to claim 11, wherein the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent comprises ketorolac, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, naproxen, idomethacin, aspirin, ketoprofen, piroxicam, or meclofenamic acid.

21. An oral care composition comprising:

a) a gum resin;

b) at least one topically acceptable oral care agent other than the gum resin that is effective as a treatment for teeth; and

c) a topically acceptable volatile solvent for the gum resin and the oral care agent.
