1. For use in a code division multiple access (CDMA) base station capable of communicating with mobile stations using an adaptive antenna array, an apparatus for allocating orthogonal codes to said mobile stations comprising:

  • a database for storing R records, each of said R records associated with an active mobile station and comprising;

         1) an active orthogonal code associated with said active mobile station;

         2) corresponding downlink beamforming coefficients associated with said active mobile station, and

         3) mobility information associated with said active mobile station; and

    a controller for comparing estimated downlink beamforming coefficients associated with a new mobile station to said R records and, in response to said comparison, selecting a first active orthogonal code associated with a first active mobile station to communicate with said new mobile station, wherein said selection is based on;

         1) an amount of correlation between said estimated downlink beamforming coefficients associated with said new mobile station and first corresponding downlink beamforming coefficients associated with said first active mobile station, and

         2) first mobility information associated with said first active mobile station.
