1. An optical transmitter, transponder or transceiver for sending supervisory data signals and line data signals as a composite optical signal through an optical fiber link comprising:

  • a) means for receiving an electrical line data signal having a line data bit rate;

    b) means for receiving an electrical supervisory data signal;

    c) means for converting the received electrical supervisory data signal into an electrical modulated supervisory data signal having one or more predetermined supervisory carrier frequencies and a supervisory carrier frequency amplitude;

    d) a driver for driving the received line data signals to a laser module e) a laser module coupled to a driver for sending as a single combined signal, a transmit signal comprising the line data signal and the converted supervisory data signal having a modulation index that is the ratio of an optical power associated with the supervisory data signals to an optical power associated with the line data signals;

    f) circuitry for receiving incoming line data bit rate information; and

    , g) control circuitry for controlling the modulation index by varying the supervisory carrier frequency amplitude in dependence upon the line data bit rate.
