Abstract

A method and apparatus for sharing personal media using a digital recorder transfers multimedia content via email to a digital video recorder.

Claims

1. A method for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), the method comprising the computer-implemented steps of:

providing a media server;

providing a content database on the media server;

wherein the content database contains multimedia content and associated metadata information;

providing a DVR;

receiving an email containing a content file on the media server; and

wherein the content file contains any of;

audio content, video content, photo content, configuration information, links to a server, or to content stored on a server.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein a user reads the email and selects the attached content file, invoking the media server to process the content file.

3. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the media server adds information about the content file to the content database.

4. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the user accesses the DVR to request available content information from the media server.

5. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein the media server sends metadata information for content that it has available that includes the content file to the DVR.

6. A method as recited in claim 5, wherein the DVR displays the metadata information to the user, and wherein the user selects the content file.

7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the DVR requests the content file from the media server.

8. A method as recited in claim 7, wherein the media server streams the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.

9. A method as recited in claim 7, wherein if the content file contains file links to one or more content files on a server, the media server sends the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR accesses the server directly over the Internet to retrieve the content file(s), wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.

10. An apparatus for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), comprising:

a media server;

a content database on the media server;

wherein the content database contains multimedia content and associated metadata information;

a DVR;

means for receiving an email containing a content file on the media server; and

wherein the content file contains any of;

audio content, video content, photo content, configuration information, links to a server, or to content stored on a server.

11. An apparatus as recited in claim 10, wherein a user reads the email and selects the attached content file, invoking the media server to process the content file.

12. An apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the media server adds information about the content file to the content database.

13. An apparatus as recited in claim 12, wherein the user accesses the DVR to request available content information from the media server.

14. An apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein the media server sends metadata information for content that it has available that includes the content file to the DVR.

15. An apparatus as recited in claim 14, wherein the DVR displays the metadata information to the user, and wherein the user selects the content file.

16. An apparatus as recited in claim 15, wherein the DVR requests the content file from the media server.

17. An apparatus as recited in claim 16, wherein the media server streams the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.

18. An apparatus as recited in claim 16, wherein if the content file contains file links to one or more content files on a server, the media server sends the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR accesses the server directly over the Internet to retrieve the content file(s), wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.

19. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions for sharing multimedia content using a digital video recorder (DVR), wherein execution of the one or more sequences of instructions by one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform the steps of:

providing a media server;

providing a content database on the media server;

wherein the content database contains multimedia content and associated metadata information;

providing a DVR;

receiving an email containing a content file on the media server; and

wherein the content file contains any of;

audio content, video content, photo content, configuration information, links to a server, or to content stored on a server.

20. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein a user reads the email and selects the attached content file, invoking the media server to process the content file.

21. A method as recited in claim 20, wherein the media server adds information about the content file to the content database.

22. A method as recited in claim 21, wherein the user accesses the DVR to request available content information from the media server.

23. A method as recited in claim 22, wherein the media server sends metadata information for content that it has available that includes the content file to the DVR.

24. A method as recited in claim 23, wherein the DVR displays the metadata information to the user, and wherein the user selects the content file.

25. A method as recited in claim 24, wherein the DVR requests the content file from the media server.

26. A method as recited in claim 25, wherein the media server streams the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.

27. A method as recited in claim 25, wherein if the content file contains file links to one or more content files on a server, the media server sends the content file to the DVR, wherein the DVR accesses the server directly over the Internet to retrieve the content file(s), wherein the DVR plays or displays content contained in the content file, and wherein the user can perform trickplay functions on the displayed content that includes, but is not limited to:

fast forward, pause, rewind, play, slow play, frame step, and slide show.
