Abstract

A system for controlling the access of services from a service provider to a client terminal provides capabilities for the user to change and modify the desired services and have the modified access information communicated to the client terminal or navigation device. The system provides a wireless connection between the client terminal and the server by way of a communications network. The server at the service provider may allow a user to modify the configuration data relating to the access rights of the client terminal. The modified configuration data may be stored on the server and wirelessly transmitted to the client terminal and stored on the client terminal. The modified configuration data may provide access to the services provided by a second service provider allowing the navigation device to access the services that are available on the second service provider as well as those available on the first service provider.

Claims

1. A system for providing modified service access information from a service provider to a vehicle navigation device, comprising:

providing a wireless connection between the navigation device and the server by way of a communications network;

providing modified configuration data relating to the access rights of the navigation device to the services provided on the server;

storing the modified configuration data on the server;

wirelessly transmitting the modified configuration data to the navigation device via the communications network; and

storing the modified configuration data in the navigation device.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising providing additional configuration data relating to the services provided on a second server.

3. The system of claim 1, where the configuration data for the navigation device is modified based on a configuration data editing process performed by the navigation device.

4. The method of claim 1, where the configuration data for the navigation device is modified based on a configuration data editing process performed on a terminal, separate from the navigation device.

5. The method of claim 4, where the terminal communicates with the server via a second communication network.

6. The method of claim 5, where a first communications network is the communications network and the second communication network is a TCP/IP based communications network.

7. The method of claim 1, where the navigation device and the server communicate with each other using a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising verifying, at the server, the allowance of a service request received from the navigation device based on the configuration data and/or access rights of the navigation device.

9. The system of claim 8, further comprising verifying, on the navigation device, the authorization of a service response received from the server based on the stored configuration data.

10. The system of claim 1, where the server compares a service type identifier associated with a service request from the navigation device with the stored access rights of the navigation device to determine whether to allow the service request.

11. The system of claim 10, where the navigation device compares a service type identifier associated with a service response from the server with the stored access rights of the navigation device to determine authorization of the service response.

12. The method of claim 1, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the navigation device by a data messaging service.

13. The system of claim 12, where the data messaging service comprises short message service technology (SMS).

14. The system of claim 1, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the navigation device when the navigation device requests a configuration data update.

15. The system of claim 14, further comprising notifying the navigation device of a configuration data modification.

16. The system of claim 1, where the navigation device stores server identifiers associated with service type identifiers and compares a received server identifier for a service response with the stored server identifiers associated to the service type identifier of the service response in order to determine the authorization of the service response.

17. The system of claim 1, further comprising, transmitting a navigation device identification number to the server;

generating a login-password request by the server and transmitting it to the navigation device.

providing a login-password associated with the identification number to the server;

verifying the login-password; and

logging the navigation device onto the server.

18. The system of claim 17, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the navigation device upon logging on to the server with the navigation device.

19. The system of claim 17, where the configuration data of the navigation device is stored on the server together with the identification number of the navigation device.

20. The system of claim 19, where, upon logging on to the server, the navigation device is enabled to change its configuration data.

21. A system for providing service access information from at least one service provider to a vehicle navigation device, comprising:

providing a wireless connection between the navigation device and a first server by way of a first communications network;

generating configuration data relating to the capabilities and/or access rights of the navigation device to the services provided on the first server;

storing the configuration data on the first server;

wirelessly transmitting the configuration data to the navigation device via the first communications network;

storing the configuration data in the navigation device;

generating additional configuration data relating to the capabilities and/or access rights of the navigation device to services provided on a second server;

wirelessly transmitting the additional configuration data to the navigation device via a second communications network; and

storing the additional configuration data in the navigation device.

22. The system of claim 21, where the first configuration data is provided by a first service provider and the additional configuration data is provided by a second service provider.

23. The system of claim 21, where the first service provider is the manufacturer of the navigation device.

24. The system of claim 21, where the first service provider is a vehicle manufacturer.

25. The system of claim 21, where the second service provider is a vehicle manufacturer.

26. A system for providing modified service access information from a service provider to a client terminal, comprising:

providing a wireless connection between the client terminal and the server by way of a communications network;

providing modified configuration data relating to the access rights of the client terminal to the services provided on the server;

storing the modified configuration data on the server;

wirelessly transmitting the modified configuration data to the client terminal via the communications network; and

storing the modified configuration data in the client terminal.

27. The system of claim 26, further comprising providing additional configuration data relating to the services provided on a second server.

28. The system of claim 26, where the configuration data for the client terminal is modified based on a configuration data editing process performed by the client terminal.

29. The method of claim 26, where the configuration data for the client terminal is modified based on a configuration data editing process performed on a terminal, separate from the client terminal.

30. The method of claim 29, where the terminal communicates with the server via a second communications network.

31. The method of claim 30, where a first communications network is the communications network and the second communications network is a TCP/IP based communications network.

32. The method of claim 26, where the navigation device and the server communicate with each other using a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

33. The system of claim 26, further comprising verifying, at the server, the allowance of a service request received from the client terminal based on the configuration data and/or access rights of the client terminal.

34. The system of claim 33, further comprising verifying, on the client terminal, the authorization of a service response received from the server based on the stored configuration data.

35. The system of claim 26, where the server compares a service type identifier associated with a service request from the client terminal with the stored access rights of the client terminal to determine whether to allow the service request.

36. The system of claim 35, where the client terminal compares a service type identifier associated with a service response from the server with the stored access rights of the client terminal to determine authorization of the service response.

37. The method of claim 26, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the client terminal by a data messaging service.

38. The system of claim 37, where the data messaging service comprises short message service technology (SMS).

39. The system of claim 26, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the client terminal when the client terminal requests a configuration data update.

40. The system of claim 39, further comprising notifying the client terminal of a configuration data modification.

41. The system of claim 26, where the client terminal stores server identifiers associated with service type identifiers and compares a received server identifier for a service response with the stored server identifiers associated to the service type identifier of the service response in order to determine the authorization of the service response.

42. The system of claim 26, further comprising, transmitting a client terminal identification number to the server;

generating a login-password request by the server and transmitting it to the client terminal;

providing a login-password associated with the identification number to the server;

verifying the login-password; and

logging the client terminal onto the server.

43. The system of claim 42, where the modified configuration data is transmitted to the client terminal upon logging on to the server with the client terminal.

44. The system of claim 42, where the configuration data of the client terminal is stored on the server together with the identification number of the terminal.

45. The system of claim 44, where, upon logging on to the server, the client terminal is enabled to change its configuration data.
