Abstract

An implantable pump system includes: an implantable pump having separate chambers or reservoirs; and a catheter having two or more reservoir-specific inlet ports directed into respective lumens of the catheter. In one embodiment, the distal tips of the respective lumens may be directed to different sites within the patient'"'"'s body, thereby allowing site specific and independent delivery of the medications stored in the respective pump chambers or reservoirs to be administered to different body sites at independently controlled times and rates. In another embodiment, the distal tips of the respective lumens are directed, more or less, to the same body site or tissue region, thereby providing for the independent delivery of multiple medications to the same regions at independently controlled times and rates.

Claims

1. An implantable pump system comprising:

an implantable pump having a plurality of separate medication-storage chambers, at least one of which plurality of medication-storage chambers is coupled to a pump means that allows a programmable rate of delivery of medication stored in the corresponding medication-storage chamber, and wherein the other medication-storage chambers include means for delivery of a bolus via a pressurized, and independently programmable pumping mechanism;

an external controller that enables the actuation of the pump means and pumping mechanism so as to administer a bolus or programmed rate of medications contained in the medication-storage chambers; and

a catheter having a plurality of independent lumens, wherein each lumen is in fluid communication with a respective one of the plurality of separate medication-storage chambers, whereby, under control of the pump means and pumping mechanism, a medication stored in one of the plurality of separate medication-storage chambers may be controllably dispensed through at least one of the lumens of said catheter.

2. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the external controller is a patient controller.

3. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the respective lumens are configured to permit the distal tip of each lumen to be directed to different sites within a patient'"'"'s body.

4. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the distal tips of the respective lumens are configured so that each distal tip must be directed together to a single site within a patient'"'"'s body.

5. The pump system of claim 1 further comprising:

at least one physiological sensor coupled to the pump means.

The pump system of claim 5 wherein the physiological sensor is configured to sense at least one of the physiological data selected from the group consisting of muscle tone, heart rate, respiration rate, blood oxygen saturation, tissue impedance, physical activity, body position, body temperature, and glucose level.

7. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the number of medication-storage chambers within the implantable pump comprises at least three.

8. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the prescribed medications stored in at least one of the plurality of medication-storage chambers is selected from the group consisting of drugs, biologics, proteins, and genetic materials.

9. The pump system of claim 1 wherein the catheter is a coaxial, multi-lumen catheter.

10. An implantable pump system comprising:

an implantable pump having at least two separate medication-storage chambers, wherein each medication-storage chambers is coupled to a separate, independently controllable pump means that allows a programmable rate of delivery of medication stored in the corresponding medication-storage chamber;

an external controller that enables the actuation of each of the separate pump means so as to administer a bolus or programmed rate of medications contained in the medication-storage chambers; and

a catheter having at least two lumens, wherein each lumen is in fluid communication with a respective one of the separate medication-storage chambers.

11. The pump system of claim 10 wherein the external controller may be placed in telecommunicative contact with an implantable control means for controlling each of the pump means to administer a bolus or programmed rate of medication.

12. The pump system of claim 10 further comprising:

at least one physiological sensor coupled to the pump means.

The pump system of claim 12 wherein the physiological sensor is configured to sense at least one of the physiological data selected from the group consisting of muscle tone, heart rate, respiration rate, blood oxygen saturation, tissue impedance, physical activity, body position, body temperature, and glucose level.

14. The pump system of claim 12 further comprising:

a back telemetry means for telemetering data sensed by the implantable physiological sensor back to the external controller.

15. The pump system of claim 14 wherein the physiological sensor is further configured for sensing status data associated with the operation of the implantable pump system.

16. The pump system of claim 10 wherein the respective lumens are configured to permit each distal tip of the lumens to be directed to different sites within a patient'"'"'s body.

17. The pump system of claim 10 wherein the respective lumens are configured so that each distal tip of each lumen can only be directed to a single site within a patient'"'"'s body.

18. The pump system of claim 10 wherein the implantable pump further comprises a Lithium Ion battery.

19. The pump system of claim 18 wherein the Lithium Ion battery is rechargeable.

20. The pump system of claim 10 wherein the catheter has coaxial lumens.
