1. A method of enabling network-based communication between a requesting device and a disconnected remote device over a data network, comprising:
- transmitting a network address request message from the requesting device to an address resolution server, the network address request message requesting a network address for the disconnected remote device;
receiving the network address request message at the address resolution server and transmitting a validation message to the disconnected remote device to determine if the disconnected remote device is disconnected from the data network;
if no response is received to the validation message, then generating an activation signal and transmitting the activation signal to the disconnected remote device;
receiving the activation signal at the remote device, and in response thereto, the remote device obtaining a network address and connecting to the data network;
transmitting the obtained network address for the connected remote device to the address resolution server; and
providing the obtained network address to the requesting device to thereby enable a network-based communication pathway from the requesting device to the connected remote device over the data network.

Abstract
A system and method of enabling network-based communication between a requesting device and a disconnected remote device over a data network is provided. The method begins by transmitting a network address request message from the requesting device to an address resolution server. The network address request message is received at the address resolution server, and subsequently a validation message is transmitted to the disconnected remote device to determine if the disconnected remote device is disconnected from the data network. If no response is received to the validation message, then an activation signal is generated and transmitting to the disconnected remote device. In response to the activation signal, the remote device obtains a network address and connects to the data network. The obtained network address for the connected remote device is then provided to the requesting device to enable a network-based communication pathway from the requesting device to the connected remote device over the data network.

9. A fault-tolerant communication system, comprising:

a first data network comprising a plurality of computer systems coupled to each other via a first local network and also coupled to an external broadband connection; and
a redundant channel connection coupled to the first data network, but normally isolated therefrom, via a remotely activated switching system;
wherein the remotely activated switching system is configured to receive a remote activation signal when the external broadband connection is disabled, thereby connecting the first data network to the redundant channel connection.

10. A method of providing intermittent connectivity with a sub-network comprising a plurality of computers, comprising:

connecting the sub-network to a network infrastructure via a remotely activated switching device, wherein the sub-network is normally disconnected from the network infrastructure and not accessible by any computer connected thereto;
detecting that a computer on the sub-network is attempting to gain access to a device and/or system coupled to the network infrastructure;
transmitting an activation signal to the remotely activated switching device;
the remotely activated switching device then obtaining a randomly generated network address from the network infrastructure and utilizing the randomly generated network address to connect the sub-network to the network infrastructure;
providing a communications pathway between the computer on the sub-network and the device and/or system coupled to the network infrastructure; and
once the user of the computer on the sub-network has ceased communications with the device and/or system coupled to the network infrastructure, then terminating the communications pathway and disconnecting the sub-network from the network infrastructure.
