Abstract

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the invention, an apparatus, system, and method efficiently manage reverse link resources by allowing a mobile station to select between transmitting a payload a standard power level and transmitting a smaller payload at a boosted power level. The mobile station, therefore, can autonomously select a QoS (Quality of Service) level for physical layer packets. Based on reverse link transmission information received from a base station, the mobile station derives a reverse link transmission guideline defining the power levels and associated payloads for at least a standard service and boosted service. The mobile station selects a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size where the standard payload size is greater than the boosted payload size.

Claims

1. A method of managing reverse link resources in a communication system, the method comprising:

at a mobile station, selecting a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size, the standard payload size greater than the boosted payload size.

2. A method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the selecting comprises:

selecting the reverse link transmission power level based on a payload size of a reverse link signal.

3. A method in accordance with claim 2, wherein the selecting further comprises:

selecting the reverse link transmission power level based on a preferred reception latency for the reverse link signal.

4. A method in accordance with claim 3, further comprising:

transmitting, at the selected reverse link transmission power level, the reverse link signal.

5. A method in accordance with claim 3, wherein the plurality of power levels are traffic to pilot power level ratios (TPRs).

6. A method in accordance with claim 5, wherein the selecting comprises:

determining a maximum allowable standard TPR; and

determining a maximum allowable boosted TPR.

7. A method in accordance with claim 6, wherein the determining the maximum allowable standard TPR comprises:

identifying, from a plurality of standard TPR values associated with a plurality of payload values, the maximum authorized standard TPR as the standard TPR value greater than or equal to an authorized TPR value.

8. A method in accordance with claim 7, wherein the determining the maximum allowable boosted TPR comprises:

identifying, from a plurality of boosted TPR values associated with the plurality of payload values, the maximum authorized boosted TPR as the boosted TPR value greater than or equal to the authorized TPR value.

9. A method in accordance with claim 8, further comprising:

establishing the plurality of TPR values based on reverse link information received from a base station.

10. A method in accordance with claim 9, wherein the establishing comprises:

deriving the plurality of boosted TPR values by adding a boost value to the plurality of standard TPR values.

11. A method in accordance with claim 7, further comprising:

receiving the normal TPR values from a base station.

12. A method in accordance with claim 9, further comprising:

receiving, from the base station, a TPR difference value indicating a difference between each normal TPR value and a corresponding boosted TPR value for an associated payload.

13. A method in accordance with claim 9, further comprising:

receiving, from the base station, a payload reduction value indicating a difference in payload size between a boosted payload size and a normal payload size for an associated TPR value.

14. A method in accordance with claim 13, wherein the payload reduction value indicates a number of packets.

15. A method in accordance with claim 9, further comprising:

transmitting a TPR indicator to the base station indicating whether the reverse link signal is being transmitted at the maximum allowable TPR or at the maximum allowable boosted TPR value.

16. A mobile station comprising:

a receiver configured to receive an authorized reverse link transmission power level;

a controller configured to select, based on the authorized reverse link transmission power level, a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size, the standard payload size greater than the boosted payload size.

17. A mobile station in accordance with claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to select the reverse link transmission power level based on a payload size of a reverse link signal.

18. A mobile station in accordance with claim 17, wherein the controller is further configured to select the reverse link transmission power level based on a preferred reception latency for the reverse link signal.

19. A mobile station in accordance with claim 18, further comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit, at the selected reverse link transmission power level, the reverse link signal.

20. A mobile station in accordance with claim 18, wherein the plurality of power levels are traffic to pilot power level ratios (TPRs).

21. A mobile station in accordance with claim 20, wherein the controller is further configured to:

determine a maximum allowable standard TPR; and

determine a maximum allowable boosted TPR.

22. A mobile station in accordance with claim 21, wherein the controller is further configured to identify, from a plurality of standard TPR values associated with a plurality of payload values, the maximum authorized standard TPR as the standard TPR value greater than or equal to an authorized TPR value.

23. A mobile station in accordance with claim 22, wherein the controller is further configured to identify, from a plurality of boosted TPR values associated with the plurality of payload values, the maximum authorized boosted TPR as the boosted TPR value greater than or equal to the authorized TPR value.

24. A mobile station in accordance with claim 23, wherein the controller is further configured to establish the plurality of TPR values based on reverse link information received from a base station.

25. A mobile station in accordance with claim 24, wherein the controller is further configured to derive the plurality of boosted TPR values by adding a boost value to the plurality of standard TPR values.

26. A mobile station in accordance with claim 24, the receiver further configured to receive the standard TPR values from a base station.

27. A mobile station in accordance with claim 26, the receiver further configured to receive, from the base station, a TPR difference value indicating a difference between each normal TPR value and a corresponding boosted TPR value for an associated payload.

28. A mobile station in accordance with claim 26, the receiver further configured to receive, from the base station, a payload reduction value indicating a difference in payload size between a boosted payload size and a normal payload size for an associated TPR value.

29. A mobile station in accordance with claim 28, wherein the payload reduction value indicates a number of packets.

30. A mobile station in accordance with claim 24, the transmitter further configured to transmit a TPR indicator to the base station indicating whether the reverse link signal is being transmitted at the maximum allowable TPR or at the maximum allowable boosted TPR value.

31. A method comprising:

transmitting reverse link transmission information for establishing a reverse link transmission guideline allowing a mobile station to select a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size, the standard payload size greater than the boosted payload size.

32. A method in accordance with claim 31, wherein the transmitting comprises:

transmitting a boost value indicating a difference between the standard reverse link transmission power level and the boosted reverse link transmission power level.

33. A method in accordance with claim 32, further comprising:

transmitting an authorized transmission power level to the mobile station.

34. A method in accordance with claim 33, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

the standard reverse link transmission power level.

35. A method in accordance with claim 33, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

the boosted reverse link transmission power level.

36. A method in accordance with claim 33, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

a margin value indicating the maximum difference between the authorized transmission power level and the selected transmission power level.

37. A method in accordance with claim 33, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

a maximum number of sub-packets for transmission in boosted mode.

38. A base station comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit reverse link transmission information for establishing a reverse link transmission guideline that allows a mobile station to select a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size, the standard payload size greater than the boosted payload size.

39. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit a boost value indicating a difference between the standard reverse link transmission power level and the boosted reverse link transmission power level.

40. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit an authorized transmission power level to the mobile station.

41. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

the standard reverse link transmission power level.

42. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

the boosted reverse link transmission power level.

43. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

a margin value indicating the maximum difference between the authorized transmission power level and the selected transmission power level.

44. A base station in accordance with claim 38, wherein the reverse link transmission information comprises:

a maximum number of sub-packets for transmission in boosted mode.

45. A method of managing reverse link resources in a communication system, the method comprising:

transmitting, from a mobile station, a QoS indicator bit indicating a selection of a reverse link transmission power level from a plurality of power levels including at least a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size, the standard payload size greater than the boosted payload size.

46. A method in accordance with claim 45, wherein the transmitting comprises transmitting a QoS indicator bit from a plurality of QoS indicator bits identifying a plurality of boosted modes.

47. A method in accordance with claim 45, wherein the transmitting comprises transmitting the QoS indicator bit in a control channel associated with a traffic channel used to transmit a payload in accordance with the power level indicated by the QoS indicator bit.

48. A method of managing reverse link resources in a communication system, the method comprising:

determining a mode of service used for transmitting a reverse link signal from a mobile station based on a received signal power level relative to a pilot signal power level and a payload size.

49. A method in accordance with claim 48, wherein the mode of service is selected from at least a standard mode and a boosted mode by the mobile station, the standard mode defining a standard reverse link transmission power level associated with a standard payload size and the boosted mode defining a boosted reverse link transmission power level associated with a boosted payload size.

50. A method in accordance with claim 49, wherein the standard payload size is greater than the boosted payload size.

51. A method performed in a mobile station of managing reverse link resources in a communication system employing a retransmission scheme to regulate use of reverse link resources, the method comprising:

autonomously selecting, based on a QoS of a reverse link packet, a combination of a reverse link power level and payload size for transmission of the reverse link packet resulting in a compromise between performance of the communication system and a reception latency of the reverse link packet.

52. A method in accordance with claim 51, wherein the retransmission scheme is a hybrid automatic repeat response (HARQ) protocol.
