Abstract

Systems and methods are described for using a point-of-sale device to obtain biometric information from an individual presenting a second-party check in association with a proposed check-cashing transaction. In various embodiments, a biometric sample is obtained from the check presenter and is compared to stored biometric data in order to enhance an assessment of the correct identification of the check presenter. In various embodiments, the biometric information, along with other transaction-related information, such as information about one or more authentication marks from the check, is transmitted to a check authorization system for a risk assessment of the transaction. In various embodiments, the point-of-sale device may receive an accept/decline recommendation from the check authorization system, based at least in part on the biometric information and may display a message about the recommendation to an operator of the point-of-sale device.

Claims

1. A point-of-sale device comprising:

a display;

a graphic input system configured to obtain data about a watermark from a payroll check presented for cashing;

a biometric input system configured to obtain biometric data from a presenter of the payroll check;

a communications interface; and

a computer processor in communication with the display, the graphic input system, the biometric input system, and the communications interface, the computer processor configured to obtain the watermark data from the graphic input system data and to obtain the biometric data from the biometric input system, wherein the computer processor is further configured to transmit via the communications interface information about the watermark data and the biometric data to at least one remote location;

the computer processor further configured to receive via the communications interface from a check authorization system an indication of a level of risk associated with cashing the payroll check;

the computer processor further configured to display on the display a message based at least in part on the indication.

2. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the biometric input system is configured to obtain at least one of the set consisting of:

fingerprint, palm print, hand geometry, voice sample, facial image, facial geometry scan, iris scan, retina scan, DNA sample, signature scan, and keystroke dynamics sample.

The point-of-sale device of claim 1, further comprising a repository of stored biometric data, wherein the computer processor is further configured to compare the biometric data from the biometric input system and the stored biometric data from the repository and to transmit information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

4. The point-of-sale device of claim 3, wherein the repository of stored biometric data comprises biometric data obtained during registration transactions from individuals who desire to present checks for cashing.

5. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the computer processor is further configured to transmit the biometric data to a third party for comparison with stored biometric data.

6. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the graphic input system is configured to obtain the watermark data by electronically reading the check.

7. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the computer processor is further configured to compare the watermark data to at least one expected watermark configuration and to transmit information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

8. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the display is configured to display a prompt to an operator of the point-of-sale device to input information about the watermark from the check.

9. The point-of-sale device of claim 1, wherein the computer processor is further configured to transmit the information about the watermark data to a third party for comparison with at least one expected watermark configuration.

10. A point-of-sale device comprising:

a graphic input system configured to obtain data about at least one authenticating mark from a check presented in connection with a check transaction;

a biometric input system configured to obtain biometric data from a presenter of the check;

a communications interface; and

a computer processor in communication with the graphic input system, the biometric input system, and the communications interface, the computer processor configured to obtain the data about the authenticating mark from the graphic input system and to obtain the biometric data from the biometric input system, wherein the computer processor is further configured to transmit via the communications interface information about the authenticating mark data and the biometric data to at least one remote location;

the computer processor further configured to receive via the communications interface from a check authorization system an indication of a level of risk associated with the check transaction.

The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the authenticating mark is a watermark, barcode, insignia, heat-sensitive mark, security validation number, color scheme, background pattern, microprinting, colorshifting ink, holographic strips, or a plurality of ultraviolet light sensitive fibers.

12. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the computer processor is further configured to compare the authenticating mark data to at least one expected authenticating mark configuration and to transmit information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

13. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the computer processor is further configured to transmit the authenticating mark data to a third party for comparison with at least one expected authenticating mark configuration.

14. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the input system is configured to obtain the authenticating mark data by electronically reading the check.

15. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the biometric input system is configured to obtain at least one of the set consisting of:

fingerprint, palm print, hand geometry, voice sample, facial image, facial geometry scan, iris scan, retina scan, DNA sample, signature scan, and keystroke dynamics sample.

16. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the computer processor is further configured to compare the biometric data to stored biometric data and to transmit information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

17. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, wherein the biometric input system is configured to selectively obtain biometric data from the check presenter in response to a prompt received via the communications interface by the computer processor from the check authorization system and displayed on the display for an operator of the point-of-sale device.

18. The point-of-sale device of claim 10, further comprising a display, the computer processor further configured to display on the display a message based at least in part on the indication.

19. A method of processing a checking transaction, the method comprising:

obtaining at a point-of-sale device insignia-related data about at least one authenticating mark from a check presented for a proposed checking transaction;

obtaining at the point-of-sale device biometric data about a check presenter;

transferring information about the insignia-related data to a remote location;

transferring information about the biometric data to a remote location;

receiving at the point-of-sale device a recommendation about accepting the checking transaction based at least in part on a risk assessment for the checking transaction that is based at least in part on the information about the insignia-related data and on the information about the biometric data.

The method of claim 19, wherein obtaining the insignia-related data comprises obtaining data about a watermark, barcode, insignia, security validation number, color scheme, background pattern, microprinting, colorshifting ink, holographic strips, or a plurality of ultraviolet light sensitive fibers.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising comparing the insignia-related data to at least one expected authenticating mark configuration.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein transferring information about the insignia-related data to a remote location comprises transmitting information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein transferring information about the insignia-related data to a remote location comprises transmitting the authenticating mark data to a third party for comparison with at least one expected authenticating mark configuration.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein obtaining biometric data comprises obtaining at least one of the set consisting of:

fingerprint, palm print, hand geometry, voice sample, facial image, facial geometry scan, iris scan, retina scan, DNA sample, signature scan, and keystroke dynamics sample.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein transferring information about the biometric data to a remote location comprises transmitting the biometric data to the check authorization system.

26. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

comparing the biometric data to stored biometric data; and

transmitting information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

27. The method of claim 19, wherein transferring information about the biometric data to a remote location comprises transmitting the biometric data to a third party for comparison with stored biometric information.

28. The method of claim 19, further comprising displaying to an operator of the point-of-sale device an indication of the recommendation.

29. A point-of-sale device comprising:

a graphic input system;

a biometric input system;

a communications interface; and

a computer processor in communication with the graphic input system, the biometric input system, and the communications interface, the computer processor configured to obtain from the graphic input system insignia-related data about at least one authenticating mark associated with a negotiable instrument presented at a financial transaction, and to obtain from the biometric input system biometric data about a presenter of the negotiable instrument, wherein the computer processor is configured to transmit via the communications interface information about the insignia-related data and information about the biometric data;

the computer processor further configured to receive via the communications interface from a check authorization system an indication of a level of risk associated with the financial transaction.

30. The point-of-sale device of claim 29, wherein the financial transaction comprises cashing the negotiable instrument.

31. The point-of-sale device of claim 30, wherein the negotiable instrument is at least one of the set consisting of:

a money order, a traveler'"'"'s check, a personal check, a corporate check, a company insurance refund check, a tax refund check, a Social Security check, a payroll check, other government-issued check, a bank check, official check, a convenience check, a second-party check, and a third-party check.

32. The point-of-sale device of claim 29, further comprising an auxiliary input system for obtaining additional biometric information from the presenter of the negotiable instrument, wherein the computer processor is further configured to compare the biometric data from the biometric input system and the additional biometric information from the auxiliary input system, the computer processor further configured to transmit information about the comparison to the check authorization system.

33. The point-of-sale device of claim 32, wherein the biometric input system is configured to obtain a photographic image of the presenter and wherein the auxiliary input system is configured to scan an image from a photo-identification card presented by the presenter.

34. The point-of-sale device of claim 29, further comprising a display;

the computer processor further configured to display on the display a message based at least in part on the indication.

35. A method of processing a financial transaction, the method comprising:

obtaining at a point-of-sale device insignia-related data about at least one authenticating mark associated with a negotiable instrument presented for a proposed financial transaction;

obtaining at the point-of-sale device biometric data about a presenter of the negotiable instrument;

transferring information about the insignia-related data to a remote location;

transferring information about the biometric data to a remote location; and

receiving at the point-of-sale device a recommendation about accepting the financial transaction based at least in part on a risk assessment for the financial transaction which is based at least in part on the information about the insignia-related data and the information about the biometric data.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the financial transaction comprises cashing the negotiable instrument.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the negotiable instrument is a money order, a traveler'"'"'s check, a personal check, a corporate check, company insurance refund check, a government check, such as a tax refund check, Social Security check, payroll check, or other government-issued check, a bank check, official check, or a convenience check.

38. The method of claim 35, wherein obtaining insignia-related data comprises obtaining data about at least one of the set consisting of:

a watermark, barcode, insignia, security validation number, color scheme, background pattern, microprinting, colorshifting ink, holographic strips, or a plurality of ultraviolet light sensitive fibers.

39. The method of claim 35, wherein obtaining insignia-related data comprises obtaining a front image and a back image of the authenticating mark.

40. The method of claim 35, wherein obtaining insignia-related data comprises obtaining a front image and a back image of the negotiable instrument.

41. The method of claim 35, further comprising comparing the insignia-related data to at least one expected authenticating mark configuration.

42. The method of claim 35, wherein transferring the information about the insignia-related data comprises transmitting the information to a third party for comparison with at least one expected authenticating mark configuration.

43. The method of claim 35, wherein transferring the information about the insignia-related data comprises transmitting the information to the check authorization system.

44. The method of claim 35, wherein obtaining biometric data comprises obtaining at least one of the set consisting of:

fingerprint, palm print, hand geometry, voice sample, facial image, facial geometry scan, iris scan, retina scan, DNA sample, signature scan, and keystroke dynamics sample.

45. The method of claim 35, further comprising displaying to an operator of the point-of-sale device an indication of the recommendation.

46. A system for processing a checking transaction, the system comprising:

means for obtaining at a point-of-sale device data about at least one authenticating mark from a check presented for a proposed checking transaction;

means for obtaining at the point-of-sale device biometric data about a presenter of the check;

means for transferring information about the authenticating mark data to a remote location;

means for transferring information about the biometric data to a remote location; and

means for receiving at the point-of-sale device a recommendation about accepting the checking transaction based at least in part on a risk assessment for thee checking transaction that is based at least in part on the information about the authenticating mark data and on the information about the biometric data.

47. The system of claim 46, wherein the means for obtaining the authenticating mark comprise means for obtaining at least one of the set consisting of:

a watermark, barcode, insignia, heat-sensitive mark, security validation number, color scheme, background pattern, microprinting, colorshifting ink, holographic strips, and a plurality of ultraviolet light sensitive fibers.

48. The system of claim 46, wherein the means for obtaining the biometric data comprise means for obtaining at least one of the set consisting of:

fingerprint, palm print, hand geometry, voice sample, facial image, facial geometry scan, iris scan, retina scan, DNA sample, signature scan, and keystroke dynamics sample.

49. The system of claim 46, further comprising means for displaying to an operator of the point-of-sale device an indication of the recommendation.
