Abstract

A method and apparatus of providing packet data services that includes establishing an over-the-air communication connection between a mobile station and a wireless network infrastructure. The mobile station communicates a version and capability indication of a wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station to the wireless network infrastructure. The wireless network infrastructure communicates a version and capability indication of the wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure to the mobile station. Operation of the mobile station and wireless network infrastructure are adjusted in accordance with the indicated versions and capabilities.

Claims

1. A method of providing packet data services, the method comprising:

establishing an over-the-air physical layer connection that establishes communication between a mobile station and a wireless network infrastructure;

communicating a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station;

communicating a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the respective version and capability indications.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein communicating packet data comprises producing packet data in the mobile station in accordance with the indicated version and capabilities supported in the infrastructure.

3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein communicating packet data comprises producing packet data in the infrastructure in accordance with the indicated version and capabilities supported in the mobile station.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station is a version of IS-835.

5. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure is a version of IS-835.

6. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the over-the-air communication connection is a radio channel.

7. A method as defined in claim 6, wherein the radio channel is a CDMA channel.

8. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the network infrastructure further comprises a packet data service node.

9. A method as defined in claim 8, wherein the standard supported in the network infrastructure is the standard supported in the packet data service node.

10. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the mobile station comprises a wireless telephone.

11. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the mobile station comprises a wireless communication enabled personal computer.

12. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the mobile station comprises a personal digital assistant device.

13. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein communicating the version and capability indications of the mobile station and infrastructure is performed during origination of a data session between the two.

14. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein communicating the version and capability indications of the mobile station and infrastructure is performed after origination of a data session between the two.

15. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein:

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station includes transmitting the version and capability indication of the mobile station to the wireless network infrastructure;

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure includes receiving the version and capability indication of the wireless network infrastructure; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the version and capability indications includes adjusting operation of the mobile station.

16. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein:

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station includes receiving the version and capability indication of the mobile station;

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure includes transmitting the version and capability indication of the wireless network infrastructure to the mobile station; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the version and capability indications includes adjusting the operation of the wireless network infrastructure.

17. A mobile station comprising:

a transmitter configured to communicate, over a physical layer, a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station to a wireless network infrastructure;

a receiver configured to receiver, over a physical layer, a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure; and

a processor configured to adjust the mobile stations operation in accordance with the version and capability of the mobile station and the wireless network infrastructure.

18. A mobile station as defined in claim 17, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station is a version of IS-835.

19. A mobile station as defined in claim 17, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure is a version of IS-835.

20. A wireless network infrastructure comprising:

a receiver configured to receiver, over a physical layer, a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in a mobile station;

a transmitter configured to communicate, over a physical layer, a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure to a mobile station; and

a processor configured to adjust the wireless network infrastructure operation in accordance with the version and capability of the mobile station and the wireless network infrastructure.

21. A wireless network infrastructure as defined in claim 20, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station is a version of IS-835.

22. A wireless network infrastructure as defined in claim 20, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure is a version of IS-835.

23. A wireless network infrastructure as defined in claim 20 further comprising a base station.

24. A wireless network infrastructure as defined in claim 20 further comprising a packet data service node.

25. A computer readable media embodying a method of communicating packet data comprising:

a recordable media; and

instructions recorded on the media that when read by a computer cause the computer to perform operations comprising;

establishing an over-the-air physical layer connection that establishes communication between a mobile station and a wireless network infrastructure;

communicating a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station;

communicating a version and capability indication of a network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the respective version and capability indications.

26. A computer readable media as defined in claim 25, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station is a version of IS-835.

27. A computer readable media as defined in claim 25, wherein the wireless packet data standard supported in the wireless network infrastructure is a version of IS-835.

28. A computer readable media as defined in claim 25, wherein:

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station includes transmitting the version and capability indication of the mobile station to the wireless network infrastructure;

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure includes receiving the version and capability indication of the wireless network infrastructure; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the version and capability indications includes adjusting operation of the mobile station.

29. A computer readable media as defined in claim 25, wherein:

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the mobile station includes receiving the version and capability indication of the mobile station;

communicating the version and capability indication of the network layer wireless packet data standard supported in the network infrastructure includes transmitting the version and capability indication of the wireless network infrastructure to the mobile station; and

communicating packet data between the mobile station and infrastructure in accordance with the version and capability indications includes adjusting the operation of the wireless network infrastructure.
