Abstract

In brief, the invention provides a method and system for admission control in a grid computing environment. When a user request for a global session is received from a submission node, applications to be launched through the global session are identified, and resource requirements are determined. A execution node is then allocated, and the global session is established between the execution node and the submission node. A user then requests an application session through the established global session, and the application session is established with the execution node.

Claims

1. A method of admission control in a grid computing system, the method comprising:

receiving a user request for a global session from a submission node;

identifying applications to be launched through the global session;

determining resource requirements for the identified applications;

allocating an execution node satisfying the resource requirements;

establishing the global session between the allocated execution node and the submission node;

receiving a user request for an application session through the established global session; and

establishing the application session with the allocated execution node.

2. A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, wherein the step of identifying applications to be launched through the global session includes consulting authorization policies to identify applications and resources which the user is authorized to use.

A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, wherein the step of determining resource requirements includes consulting an application profile, the application profile including an identification of resource requirements for an application, including processor requirements and network bandwidth requirements.

4. A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, wherein the application session is a graphical interactive session.

5. A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, wherein multiple application sessions are launched in the global session.

6. A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, wherein user interaction is controlled through one or more management agents, the one or more management agents being driven by authorization policies.

7. A method of admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 1, further comprising:

generating a first admission control decision, the first admission control decision regarding the admission of the global session to the execution node; and

generating a second admission control decision, the second admission control decision regarding the admission of the application session to the execution node.

8. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment, the system comprising including one or more processors, one or more memories coupled to the one or more processors, and program instructions stored in the one or more memories, the one or more processors being operable to execute the program instructions, the program instructions comprising:

receiving a user request for a global session from a submission node;

identifying applications to be launched through the global session;

determining resource requirements for the requested global session;

allocating an execution node satisfying the resource requirements;

establishing the global session between the allocated execution node and the submission node; and

establishing an application session with the allocated execution node.

9. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment according to claim 8, further comprising authorization policies which includes for each user a list of applications which the user is authorized to use.

10. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment according to claim 8, further comprising an applications profiles repository which provides information concerning resource requirements for individual applications.

11. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment according to claim 8, further comprising a grid scheduler which performs the step of allocating resources for the global session.

12. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment according to claim 8, further comprising one or more management agents, the one or more management agents being driven by authorization policies.

13. A system for admission control in a grid computing environment, the system comprising:

a distributed resource management node, the distributed resource management node including a grid scheduler and a global admission control module, the grid scheduler configured to receive a user request and to match user requirements to available system resources; and

a plurality of execution nodes coupled to the distributed resource management node;

wherein the global admission control module is configured to generate an admission control decision regarding admission to a global session on one of the execution nodes.

14. A system according to claim 13, wherein the distributed resource management node is configured to manage global interactive sessions and application sessions.

15. A system according to claim 14, further including a session admission control module, the session admission control module configured to generate a second admission control decision regarding the admission of an application session to the execution node.

16. A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system, the computer program product including a computer usable medium having computer readable code embodied in the computer usable medium, the computer readable code including instructions to:

receive a user request for a global session;

identify applications to be launched through the global session;

determine resource requirements for the requested global session;

allocate an execution node satisfying the resource requirements;

establish the global session for the allocated execution node; and

establish an application session for the allocated execution node.

A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, wherein the step of identifying applications to be launched through the global session includes consulting authorization policies to identify applications and resources which the user is authorized to use.

A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, wherein the step of determining resource requirements includes consulting an application profile, the application profile including an identification of resource requirements for an application, including processor requirements and network bandwidth requirements.

19. A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, wherein the application session is a graphical interactive session.

20. A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, wherein multiple application sessions are launched in the global session.

21. A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, wherein user interaction is controlled through one or more management agents, the one or more management agents being driven by authorization policies.

22. A computer program product for admission control in a grid computing system according to claim 16, the computer readable code further including instructions to:

generate a first admission control decision, the first admission control decision regarding the admission of the global session to the execution node; and

generate a second admission control decision, the second admission control decision regarding the admission of the application session to the execution node.
