Abstract

A smart traffic control device transmits information to approaching vehicles regarding its current and future state enabling vehicles to control their speed to avoid arriving at the traffic control device until it permits the passage of traffic, thus avoiding stopping, idling and reaccelerating when reaching the traffic control device. In other embodiments the traffic control device or systems receives information from vehicles, transmitting it to other vehicles.

Claims

1. A traffic control device, comprising:

a) means to transmit the control device locations with respect to approaching vehicles,

b) means to transmit the current state of the control device with respect to vehicles based on their approach direction,

c) means to transmit the remaining time before changing states with respect to approaching vehicles.

2. A traffic control device, comprising:

a) means to transmit the to a vehicle the stop and go cycles of an approaching TCD,

b) means to calculate and display the most optimized/efficient speed to driver or vehicle control system so that the vehicle can time its passage through the intersection during a go cycle without having to stop prior to passing through the intersection.
