Abstract

Aspects of the present invention include systems and methods for indicating an amount of use of a pulse oximetry sensor. According to one embodiment, the system includes an oximeter that monitors the amount of use for a given sensor. The oximeter and/or the sensor may advantageously include a visual alarm, an audio alarm, a vibrational alarm, a power down function, or the like, which can be activated when a predetermined amount of use has expired. According to another embodiment, the system includes a sensor having a memory device storing a unique identifier.

Claims

1. A method of tracking an amount of use of electronics of a noninvasive optical probe to alert a caregiver when the electronics have expired from overuse, the method comprising:

detecting at least one of an oximeter activating emitters capable of emitting light for noninvasive detection or an output of a light sensitive detector capable of detecting the emitted light after attenuation by body tissue, wherein electronics of a noninvasive sensor comprise at least one of the emitters or the light sensitive detector;

updating a cumulative measure of an amount of use of the electronics of the noninvasive sensor;

determining whether the cumulative measure exceeds a predetermined amount of use; and

activating an indicator capable of informing a caregiver that the electronics of the noninvasive sensor have expired from overuse.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the noninvasive sensor comprises a combination of disposable and reusable sensors and wherein reusable components include the electronics of the noninvasive sensor.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the activating the indicator comprises activating the indicator capable of informing the caregiver that the reusable components have expired.

4. A noninvasive optical probe comprising a reusable portion and a disposable portion, wherein the reusable portion includes at least one of emitters capable of emitting light or a detector capable of detecting light attenuated by body tissue, the noninvasive optical probe being capable tracking an amount of use of the reusable portion, wherein the noninvasive optical probe comprises:

a reusable portion comprising;

at least one of one or more emitters capable of emitting light or a detector capable of detecting the light after the light has been attenuated by body tissue, wherein attenuated light is indicative of one or more physiological parameters of the body tissue, and

a timer capable of determining a cumulative amount of use of the reusable portion; and

a disposable portion capable of removably securing the reusable portion to the body tissue.

5. The noninvasive optical probe of claim 4, wherein the timer is capable of determining whether the cumulative amount of use exceeds a predetermined value.

6. The noninvasive optical probe of claim 4, wherein the reusable portion further comprises an indicator capable of informing a caregiver that the reusable portion has expired from overuse and should be replaced.
