Abstract

A system and methods for retrieving and presenting data in a tag-based component environment. The disclosed system provides an efficient mechanism for associating point and non-point data using selected modeling approaches to organize and reference the data. The modeling approaches provide the ability generate customized retrieval routines that support reusable components incorporating direct and indirect referencing techniques.

Claims

1. A system for developing computer models for the collection and display of data, the system comprising:

a component builder that provides functionality for modeling component definitions that associate tag-based point data and first non-point data through inclusion in a joined table comprising both tag-based point data and first non-point data, wherein the point data comprises data collected from at least one addressable informational source and the first non-point data comprises context-defining data associated with the point data; and

a view builder that provides functionality for generating views that correspond to instantiations of the component definitions generated by the component builder specifying how the point data and first non-point data are displayed.

The system of claim 1 wherein, the component builder further provides functionality for associating second non-point data with the tag-based point data and first non-point data within the modeled component definition, wherein the second non-point data is associated with a non-tag-based informational source.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein, integration of the second non-point data of the non-tag based informational source with the tag-based point data and non-point data is facilitated by the modeled component definition.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein, the structure of the joined table is such to allow the point data and first non-point data contained therein to be associated with second non-point data thereby facilitating data integration.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein, the instantiations of the component definitions are populated with point data and first non-point data accessed from the joined table.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein, the view builder further provides functionality for embedding at least one previously defined view within a second view such that the at least one previously defined view represents subcomponents of the second view.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein, embedding of the at least one previously defined view within the second view provides a mechanism for reusable view generation.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein, the view builder further provides functionality for embedding at least one previously defined second view within a third view such that the at least one previously defined second view represents a subcomponent of the third view.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein, the modeled component definitions are representative of logical associations of a plurality of addressable informational sources.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein, a selected modeled component definition represents a logical association of a plurality of addressable informational sources.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein, a plurality of addressable informational sources are associated with a plurality of modeled component definitions such that a selected view provides a mechanism to associate the point data and first non-point data of the addressable informational sources.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein, the component builder further provides functionality for defining differential collection strategies for the point data and non-point data.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein, the differential collection strategies for the point data and non-point data differ with respect to the frequency of collection.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein, the differential collection strategies for the point data and non-point data differ with respect to the manner in which the point data and non-point data are collected.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein, the point data comprises operational data representative of at least one of:

monitoring, control, and reporting functions relating to the operation of a selected back-end data source.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein, the point data reflects real-time values associated with the at least one addressable informational source.

17. A method of generating a computer model for the collection and display of aggregated point data and non-point data, the method comprising:

defining a component definition representative of a collection of at least one point data element and at least one non-point data element;

instantiating at least one instance of the component definition wherein each point data element of the instance is associated with selected point data from at least one point data source and each non-point data element of the instance is associated with selected non-point data to give context to the point data; and

defining at least one view for displaying selected point data and non-point data wherein the at least one view references a portion of the point data and non-point data elements of the at least one instance to populate selected portions of the at least one view.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein, the component definition further comprises tag-based point data and non-point data and non-tag-based non-point data.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein, the non-tag-based non-point data comprises data associated with at least one of:

human resource managements systems, customer relationship management systems, and enterprise resource planning systems.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein, the at least one view defines a logical association between selected tag-based data and selected non-tag-based data.

21. The method of claim 17 further comprising defining an extended component definition that incorporates at least one previously defined component definition thereby embedding at least a portion of the collection of point data elements and non-point data elements without explicit reference within extended component definition.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the extended component definition further incorporates at least one point data element and non-point data element without referencing a previously defined component definition.

23. The method of claim 17 further comprising defining an extended view that incorporates an embedded display of selected point data and non-point data associated with at least one previously defined view.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the extended view further directly incorporates the display of selected point data and non-point data.

25. A method of generating a computer model for the collection and display of aggregated point data and non-point data, the method comprising:

defining a component collection representative of a collection of at least one point data reference and at least one non-point data reference; and

accessing point data associated with the at least one point data reference and non-point data associated with the at least one non-point data reference to define at least one view for displaying the selected point data and non-point data.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein, the point data comprises data collected from at least one tag-based addressable informational source and the non-point data comprises context-defining data associated with the point data.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein, the point data comprises operational data representative of at least one of:

monitoring, control, and reporting functions relating to the operation of the at least one tag-based addressable informational source.

28. The method of claim 26 wherein, the point data reflects real-time values associated with the at least one tag-based addressable informational source.

29. The method of claim 26 wherein, the non-point data comprises at least one of:

relational, structural, attribute and documentational data providing context to at least a portion of the point data.

30. The method of claim 26 wherein, the view displays tag-based point data and non-point data in connection with selected non-tag-based non-point data.

31. The method of claim 28 wherein, the non-tag-based non-point data comprises data associated with at least one of:

human resource management systems, customer relationship management systems, and enterprise resource planning systems.
